The amount you pay forSocial Security will temporarilydrop for 2011. In the past youand your employer have bothpaid 6.2 percent of your annual

gross income into the SocialSecurity fund. This year yourportion goes down to 4.2 per-cent.

Heres how that looks in realnumbers:

If you make $30,000, yourSocial Security tax will fall from$1,860 to $1,260, thus savingyou $600. Thats $50 per month.

If you make $40,000, yourSocial Security tax will fall from$2,480 to $1,680, thus savingyou $800. Thats $66 per month.

If you make $50,000, yourSocial Security tax will fall from$3,100 to $2,100, thus savingyou $1,000. Thats $83 permonth.

If youre self-employed youhave been paying 12.4 percentof your income to SocialSecurity. For this year, that willdrop to 10.4 percent.

The government, oneassumes, wants you to spendthat extra money out in the mar-

ketplace to help the economyget back on its feet by creatingother jobs. A better plan is to useit to help yourself.

Here are a few things you cando with that (albeit small)amount of money:

If you have credit-card debt, pick a card and increase yourmonthly payment by thatamount, perhaps even roundingup to the next $10 increment.

Catch up on past dueaccounts that have been costingyou extra in fees and interest.

Add the extra as a principalpayment on an existing loan, thereby shortening the life ofthat loan.

If you habitually run up debtat Christmas, once that debt ispaid off, put the extra money ina Christmas savings account atthe bank. By the end of this yearyoull have enough to pay cash

for all your purchases.Whatever you do, dont take

on new payments on theassumption that youll continueto have that increased amountin your pocket over the longhaul.

    Dollars & $enseBy David Uffington

    Use your two-percent wind-

    fall from Social Security tax

    reduction to make some

    extra payments.

Hard Water Damages Your HomeGMX Protects Your Home From Hard Water Damage Without Salt!

GMX Water ConditioningSolving Hard Water Problems

GMX Systems Solve Scale Build-up Problems

    1. Typical scale andcalcium buildup causedby untreated water hasalmost closed this pipe.

    2. This photo shows the effectof magnetically treatedwater on the same sectionof pipe a short time afterthe installation.

    3. After continual treatment, most scale is removedand will be prevented aslong as the system is inoperation.

Does Your WaterHeater Make Rumblingand Popping Noises?Hard Water May Be

    The Reason.

    THE PROBLEM:

    1. Mineral Deposits Ruin Fixtures Spots Etch Shower Doors

Crusty Deposits Corrode Faucets Ugly Ring in Toilets

    2. Hard Water is Harsh Dries Skin and Hair

    3. Deposits Damage Appliances Clogs Water Heaters and Dish Washers Clogs Faucets and Shower Heads

    4. Salt Softeners Waste Water 5,000 to 15,000 Gallons Every Year

    5. Softeners Require Maintenance

Constantly Adding Sodium or Potassium Salts

GMX systems use a high-intensitymagnetic fieldto induce molecularchanges in your water. You get ALLthe same benefits as softening thewater without ANY of the hassles.GMX technology is long proven andhas been the product of choice bysavvy New Mexico consumers for16 years. Every customer is pro-tected by a 90-Day Money BackGuarantee and a Lifetime Warranty.

Why Choose GMXInstead of a Softener?

Simplicity: GMX requires no bulky tanks or drains,no electricity. Installation usually takes less than anhour and usually requires no plumbing. It is about thesize of a shoebox, so it doesnt take up all your space.

Maintenance Free: GMX requires no maintenanceand no operating expense, it never needs to berepaired or replaced.

Healthy: Because GMX uses no salt or chemical, itis safe for plants, animals, and humans, even thosewith high blood pressure and heart disease.

Environmentally Safe: Because there is no backflushing, GMX is the only treatment for hard waterthat does not waste 1000s of gallons of water. GMXis safe for septic systems, even in areas that restrictdischarge of softener brine into septic systems.

Cost: Hard water costs you money in plumbingrepairs, appliance replacement, and expensive house-hold cleaners. Softeners cost three times as much asGMX and require constant maintenance. GMX savesyou enough to pay for itself in one to two years.

Spring is just around thecorner in the Duke City, whichis normally the best time ofyear to put your home on themarket, in my opinion.

However, I have comeacross many sellers recentlywho have little or no equity intheir home making it difficultto sell. On the other side, buy-ers are being quite picky andtaking their time to make anoffer, and submitting usuallyvery aggressive offers at that!

Now more than ever, it isimportant to make your homestand out from the others beingsold. I cant emphasize thisenough. So, instead of address-ing staging as I usually do, Imencouraging you to think,What can I do to help buyersvisualize my home as theirpotential new home?

If you put yourself in thebuyers shoes, it may be easierthan you think.

    Real Estate CornerBy Tom Bruno

Staging your home does nothave to necessarily cost youanything but your time. Otherthan the obvious remove theclutter comments, you can

    and should evaluate furniture

placement and layout. Makethe room work for anyone, notjust you.

Remove the personal items buyers need to visualizetheir stuff in their newhome. Your taste in art maynot match theirs, so take downmost of the paintings and art-work. Additionally, simple

yard clean up and painting will

do wonders.Dont miss out on spring

home sales. Price your homeaggressively and make itmove-in-ready for potentialbuyers.

    Southwest GardenerBy Curtis Smith, Ph.D.

Not all exotic plants requirepampering and a green thumb toget results. Consider theKalanchoe daigremontiana, anative of South America.

It goes by a number of com-mon names. Pregnant plant, mother of thousands and devilsbackbone are just a few of thecommon names.

This is an interesting plant formany reasons. But first I shouldpoint out that it is very toxic tohumans and pets. Do not eat it,and keep it away from pets andchildren.

The ability of this plant to pro-duce foliar embryos through the

process of apomixes makes itvery interesting. Baby plants(foliar embryos), which are pro-duced along the edge of the leaf, drop to the soil and take root whenthey are mature. Each then pro-duces a new plant.

I first learned of this plantwhen I was in my early teens andsaw it at a friends house. I wasgiven some of the embryos andput them into my coat pocket. Iforgot about the embryos and putmy coat in the closet at home. Ifound the coat with embryos inthe pocket many months later. Iplanted them and they grew.

This toughness makes this agood plant for people withbrown thumbs. This is one plantthat you can kill only by overwa-tering or never watering.

The Kalanchoe daigremon-tiana are succulent plants (fleshyplants with stored water in the tis-sues). This explains their tough-ness and ability to survive very

infrequent watering. They bloomonly rarely for most indoor gar-deners, and, because the flowersare attractive, they are very inter-esting plants to grow.

    Going GreenHeres hot news: Geothermal

heating and cooling systems notonly save you money, theyallow for more peace and quietat home. Unlike ordinary airconditioners or heat pumps,

theres no noisy outdoor unit todisturb your environment oryour neighbors.

In addition, they provide pre-cise distribution of comfortableair all year long, eliminating hotand cold spots. Using a series ofunderground pipes called aloop, a geothermal systemremoves heat energy from theearth to heat your home. In hotweather, the system delivers coolair by pulling heat out of the

building and depositing it backinto the cooler earth. The groundmaintains a steady temperaturebecause it absorbs 47 percent ofthe suns energy as it hits theEarths surface. Geothermal sys-tems are designed to use that freeenergy just under the surface.

    Geothermal systems are easy

to install, especially whenreplacing a forced-air system. Most systems dont need muchmaintenance beyond a periodiccheck and filter changes.According to the experts at

WaterFurnace, a leading manu-facturer of geothermal coolingand heating equipment, home-owners with geothermal sys-tems can anticipate an averagesystem life span of more than 24years, along with less mainte-nance and lower life cycle coststhan a traditional system.

Many homeowners can evenget a tax credit for installing ageothermal system by 2016.The American Recovery and

Reinvestment Act (ARRA) pro-vides a one-time tax credit of 30percent of the total investmentfor homeowners who install res-idential ground loop or ground-water geothermal heat pumps.

If your home has older windows, you may be using 35 percent more energy than if you had newer

ones. Jim Champion, owner of The Window Connection, can help you save money and energy.

By Page TurnerYou may not give a lot of

thought to your homes win-dows. But you should.

If your home has older win-dows, you may be using up to35 percent more energy than ifyou had newer ones anoticeable difference in yourheating and cooling bills.

Choosing doors and win-dows that are built for our cli-mate, and manufactured towithstand sun, wind, dust andmonsoons, is critical in ensur-ing energy efficiency, cuttingback on noise infiltration andincreasing the value of yourhome.

The Window Connection isjust the place to satisfy your

window and door needs. InAlbuquerque, 75 percent of thecost of replacement windowsadds back to the value of yourhome, says The WindowConnections owner and oper-ator Jim Champion.Homeowners typically recap-ture the cost in energy savingswithin about three years.

Whether youre looking forfiberglass, wood or best-sell-ing vinyl, The Window

Connection is the place to go.With a multitude of color andglass options, youll find win-dows to fit your homes needs and your budget.

The biggest advance inwindows in the past 20 to 30years is the Low E-3 coating which we offer free on allthe windows we sell, Jimsays. Three layers of silveroxide or titanium oxide reflectheat back to its source. So, insummer it bounces heat backoutside, and in winter itbounces heat back inside.

All of The WindowConnections products are

All of The WindowConnections installers are cer-tified by the AmericanArchitectural ManufacturersAssociation, and they all owntheir own break. A breakis an expensive, specializedtool used to clad vinyl or alu-minum around door or windowframes, Jim explains. Youcan tell the quality of installer

by whether he owns his owntools. In addition to windows

and doors, The WindowConnection also does generalconstruction and homeimprovement, and installs avariety of stucco productsincluding synthetic andcement-based. On the compa-nys website, www.thewin-dowconnection.com, theyreoffering $500 off stucco withthe purchase of five or more

When your home needs plumbing, heating, cooling or electrical work, its time to see anexpert! Co-owner Tracy Howland (far left) and each member of the crew at Affordable ServicePlumbing & Heating specializes in a particular field, so plumbers do the plumbing, electricians

do the electrical work, and HVAC installers do installation.

By Page TurnerFor three years, Sherry lived

with a dysfunctional air condi-tioner in her Rio Rancho home. From the day it was installed, Ihad trouble with it, she says. She sweltered through the highdesert summers with a unit that

never cooled enough. I calledthree different local heating andcooling companies over thecourse of those three years tohave them diagnose and repairthe problem, she says. None ofthem could figure out what waswrong with it. One recommend-ed I just replace the whole sys-tem, while another charged me$1,500 and still couldnt fix it.

Luckily for Sherry, she dis-covered Affordable ServicePlumbing & Heating. We usedcomputerized technology tolocate a twist in the refrigerationline, says co-owner TracyHowland. It was an inexpen-sive fix, and we were able toaccomplish what no other com-pany to that point could wecooled Sherrys home and madeher comfortable.

For 25 years, AffordableService Plumbing & Heatinghas made customer satisfactionits top priority. Actually, we tryto take our customers beyondthe point of satisfaction to thepoint of customer delight,

Tracy says. We want to buildand maintain a relationship thatwill make you a customer forlife.

The com-pany holds its own MasterMechanical license andElectrical Engineers license. They have an A+ rating with theBetter Business Bureau, andnumerous positive ratings onAngies List a website whereconsumers rank their personal

experiences with local compa-nies. We provide the best qual-ity installations, Tracy says. Our guys are specialists in theirfields: the plumbers just doplumbing, the electricians justdo electrical, installers justinstall, and salespeople just sell.

This way, the best pos-sible person is takingcare of your particularneeds. This set up also

prevents any bait-and-switch pricing, sincethe installer doesnt setthe pricing. Affordableuses a flat-rate pricingstructure, based on a

national average of how long ajob would take if performed by acompetent technician not anhourly figure that could beskewed by the techs skill level. All of our techs are backgroundchecked and drug tested.

Theyre trustworthy, and Iwould feel comfortable sendingthem to my own grandmothershouse, he says.
