    Whats New inthe InForm OS

3PAR InForm OS Release 2.2.2 is a feature release. New features included in

InForm OS Release 2.2.2 are described below.

    Midrange UtilityPlatform Support

Support for 3PAR InServ E200 Storage Server is now available. InServ E200

brings the benefits of Utility Storage for departmental or remote office

consolidation. Please inquire with a 3PAR Sales Representative or a 3PAR

authorized reseller for more information on InServ E200.

    Native iSCSISupport

3PAR Utility Storage extends multi-protocol support in a single system with

added support for 2-port iSCSI HBAs on 3PAR X-Series 2400 MHz Controller

Nodes. Users can now consolidate both Fibre Channel and iSCSI hosts on a

single 3PAR InServ Sx00 or E200 Storage Server. Native iSCSI connectivity is

supported for Microsoft Windows, Red Hat Linux, or SuSE Linux hosts. 3PAR

iSCSI HBAs are equipped with full iSCSI and TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE).

    Consistent Multi-Volume Physical

    Copies

Consistent physical copy of a group of volumes can now be created with

3PAR Full Copy. This enables users to create a consistent, crash-level

recovery point of a database and/or file system that uses multiple 3PAR

    Virtual Volumes.

Support for up to32, 000 Virtual

    LUNs

Within a single InServ Storage Server, there is now support for up to 32,000

Virtual LUNs (VLUNs) providing users with greater flexibility.

    HP MC ServiceGuard Support

Hewlett Packard ServiceGuard clustering software is now supported on

Hewlett Packard PA-RISC architecture servers. Users now have expanded

support for high-availability configurations on HP servers.

    3PAR MultipathI/O for MicrosoftWindows v1.0.16

3PAR MPIO for Microsoft Windows v1.0.16 is now available, enabling

support for "fan-in" of up to four InServ host ports. That is, a single

Microsoft Windows host initiator can now see up to four InServ host ports

when connecting over SAN. Users now have expanded support for high-

availability blade server configurations.2.53PAR InForm Operating System Release Notes

    3PAR InForm CIMAPI (enhanced)

In addition to previous capabilities, the CIM API now supports the following

    SMI-S Array Subprofiles and Packages:

    Supported ArrayPackages

    Supported ArrayProfiles

Additionally, 3PAR extensions have been added that allow for full Health

and Inventory Management of all physical components that comprise the

    InServ Storage Server.

Lastly, a set of View classes have been added to the CIM API. These classes

allow for clients to retrieve information from the CIM Server in a faster,

more efficient manner than with the classes that are used with SMI-S by

aggregating multiple classes and associations into a single class.

For details, please refer to the 3PAR CIM API Programming Reference.

    Package Version Purpose

Block Services 1.1.0 Provides management of Storage Volumes and

    StoragePools.

    Subprofile Version Purpose

Multiple Computer System 1.1.0 Provides information about the multiple computer

systems (controller nodes) that cooperate to

present a virtual computer system (cluster).

iSCSI Target Ports 1.1.0 Provides management of front end (host facing)

iSCSI ports.3PAR InForm Operating System Release Notes

    Modifications to the InForm

    OS

    Bug ID Item Description

    12920 Running

    removesnmppw kills

    the SNMP agent and

    results in an SNMP

    trap.

The previous behavior when removing an SNMP community

string using the removesnmppw CLI command was to re-initialize the SNMP agent by killing the process.

This has been changed; running the removesnmppw command now does not kill the SNMP agent process or

    generate any traps.

    17031 CIM Server not able

    to receive all SLP

    messages.

In the case where the CIM Server is not running on the

Controller Node with the active IP address, the CIM Server

would not receive any DA advertisements or SA service

request multicasts, effectively disabling SLP discovery.

    This has been fixed.

    17343 Remote mirroring

    buffers caused node

    problems.

Remote mirroring transmit buffer grew too large, causing

the Controller Node to crash due to being out of memory.

The maximum size of the buffers has been reduced.

    18054 Events not processed

    by the SP.

Events were not being processed by the SP when the InServ

had certain ranges of IP addresses.

Firewall rules were corrected to properly handle this

situation.2.73PAR InForm Operating System Release Notes

3PAR InForm OS and Administration Tools Release Notes

    Limitations ofthe InForm OS

    Fibre Channel/SCSI Interface

The InForm OS does not provide user-level control on write caching via the

SCSI mode select command. Write-caching is on by default. Deferred errors

will never be reported after status is sent for a write command. The InServ

storage system software may go into write-through mode while handling

certain events such as loss of battery charge or a faulty node.

The following SCSI commands are supported but are effectively null

operations: rezero_unit, format_unit, seek, verify, sync_cache, send_diag. The SCSI command write verify performs a write operation but not a verify operation.

    Head-of-queue and ordered-queue are not supported. Simple-queue

    currently defaults to unrestricted reordering.

    Deleting LargeSnapshotVolumes

For volumes that are extremely large and/or have a large amount of

ongoing writes, deleting snapshots of the volume may take a long time.

This is particularly the case for volumes larger than 100G. Times in excess of

20 minutes have been observed in the worst cases. As of release 2.1.2, this

no longer blocks growth of TPVVs, CPVVs and CPGs, which previously could

18894 The system manager overran a buffer of log sense write error

parameter pages read from a drive while searching for the

total number of unrecovered error sectors parameter.

    20436 Total battery count

    for the node out of

    sync.

The kernel's total battery count for the node went out-of-

sync with the battery counts maintained for each power

supply. This data was reported to the cimserver, which

allocated memory based upon the total battery count, and a

segfault occurred when accessing data beyond the allocated

    limit.

    This has been fixed.

cause host writes to fail. However, this will still make both the GUI and CLI

unresponsive for the duration of the snapshot deletion.

In addition to manual deletion via the removevv command, snapshot

deletions may be performed automatically by the use of Physical Copy or

Remote Copy. Remote Copy makes particularly heavy use of snapshot

deletion when it is configured to use asynchronous periodic mode.

    Fibre Channeland N-to-1

    Remote Copy

While both Remote Copy over Fibre Channel (RCFC) and N-to-1 remote copy

are supported in this release, N-to-1 is only available when using IP

    connections.

    Known Issueswith the

    InFormOperating

    System

    UncontrolledShutdown(Bug 7833)

If the InServ Storage Server encounters a double node failure where two

nodes undergo an uncontrolled shutdown (i.e. no panic saves), when the

nodes rejoin the cluster, any LDs whose two owners are the two nodes will

go through a check. Currently there is a bug that can cause checks on

RAID 5 LDs between such nodes to remain in the checkld state forever.

Workaround - Perform a shutdownsys reboot. This will allow the LDs to be checked and restarted.

    Controlport rstProblem withFibre Channel

    Adapter by LSILogic

When the controlport rst command is issued, for an InServ port

manufactured by LSI Logic, the device driver reclaims all the command

resources from the port hardware before disabling the transmitter. During

the reclamation process, if the host sends a command to the port, it will be

replied with a QUEUE FULL status. The behavior cause a problem to the

Egenera BladeFame System Software prior to version 4.0, which on

receiving a QUEUE FULL status, does not perform the failover to the other

path. As a result, pserver blades on the BladeFrame may lose their boot

    device and fail.

Workaround - Disconnect the cable on the InServ Storage Server side,

then issue controlport rst.2.93PAR InForm Operating System Release Notes

3PAR InForm OS and Administration Tools Release Notes

    DynamicOptimization

When the tunealdvv command is used to change the characteristics of volumes, the system will place all logical disks into writethru mode for a

short period of time (in the order of tens of seconds). The system also will

block off I/O from all hosts for a short period of time (in the order of

seconds). The time at which these operations will occur is close to the end of

the tune process, after data has been copied over to the target regions. On

smaller systems or on larger volumes, this may happen more than once for a

single tunealdvv command. External to the system, this is visible as a slowdown in host I/O, but will not lead to any disruption of service.3PAR InForm Operating System Release Notes

  • 3PAR InForm Operating System and Administration Tools Release Notes

    Tools

Virus Checking Virus checking is known to slow down and potentially cause problems with installation of the InForm Administration Tools. Before attempting

installation or uninstallation of the InForm Administration Tools, please

shut down all running applications and disable virus-checking software.

    ScriptingConsiderations

By default, the InForm Administration Tools are installed in the following

    location:

    Windows: C:\Program Files\3par\inform\\

    Solaris: /opt/3par/inform//

    where:

is the current release version, e.g. 2.2.2.

This is done so that multiple versions of the administration tools can reside

on the same client system simultaneously.

If you have scripts that depend on the location of the binaries for any of the

administration tools, be aware that you will need to update your scripts or

environment variables to point to the latest version of the tools. As an

alternative, if you do not need to keep multiple versions of the tools

installed, you can change the default install location of the tools to a path

of your choosing so that the path stays consistent from release to release.

If you do this, you must fully uninstall the previous version using the

provided uninstaller before installing a new version. 3PAR InForm Administration Tools Release Notes

  • 3PAR InForm Operating System and Administration Tools Release Notes

    SolarisInstallation

Because of a known problem with InstallShield on Solaris, installation

directly from the CD can occasionally fail. In such a case, the user is

presented with a dialog that reads JVM not found. Given this, 3PAR

recommends that you install via the instructions below.

1 Insert the InForm OS Administration Tools and Documentation CD into

    your CD drive.

2 Copy /cdrom/cdrom0/solaris/setup.bin to a suitable temporary location on your hard drive, such as /tmp. You will need approximately 45 MB of temporary free space to copy the file. Note: This temporary

space can be reclaimed at the end of the installation process.

3 Run the installation using the setup.bin file in temporary location you just created. For example, if you copied the file to /tmp, the command to start the installation is:

    # ./tmp/setup.bin4 Follow all instructions during the installation. For detailed information,

please refer to the 3PAR InForm Administrators Guide.

5 Remove the setup.bin file that you copied.

NOTE: Shut down all running applications and disable virus-checking

software before proceeding with the following instructions.3.33PAR InForm Administration Tools Release Notes

    GUI

    Bug ID Item Description

    18386 Creation of RAID 5

    CPGs with Set Size

    greater than 3+1

    fails.

When creating or modifying CPGs, the Admin space LDs are

always RAID1, even if the CPG itself is RAID5. The GUI was

erroneously passing the set size value the user entered for

the CPG as the value of the set size for the RAID1 LDs. Any

value above 4 is not valid for RAID 1, resulting in a cryptic

message about the valid set sizes for RAID1.

    Limitations ofthe InForm GUI

    Supported InServStorage Servers

Due to changes in the InForm OS itself, this version of the 3PAR InForm

Graphical User Interface (GUI) can be used only to monitor InServ Storage

Servers running InForm OS version 2.2.1, build 114. It cannot be used to

monitor servers running prior versions of the software, including InForm OS

    version 2.2.1, build 88.

    Limit on Numberof Open

    Windows whenDisplaying

    Events

Because of the amount of data displayed in the Event Summary screen, if

the user attempts to open multiple windows while displaying this screen,

they may encounter an Out of Memory error, which will cause the InForm

GUI to exit. The number of windows that can be open while displaying

event information is dependent on how many systems InForm GUI is

connected to and the number of events in the eventlog on those systems.

    Known Issueswith the

    InForm GUI

    Statistics Plotwont Continue

    after NodeFailure (Bug 502)

If you are plotting statistics and the node that the GUI is connected to

fails, a dialog will be displayed indicating the plots will stop. The error

    says, Plot cannot continue.

Workaround - Restart the plot manually.

    Statistics ALLPlots Fail when a

    Single ResourceFails (Bug 3086)

If you are plotting all resources on a node (such as ALL PDs) and one of

them fails or is removed, rather than continuing with the surviving

resources, the system reports a failure to the GUI. This causes the plot to

stop with an error, Plot cannot continue.

Workaround -The workaround is to restart the plot manually. The plot

will then be initialized with only the surviving resources.3PAR InForm Administration Tools Release Notes

    Fatal Error whenChanging

    Versions ofInServ Softwarew/GUI Running

    (Bug 5641)

If you change the version of the software on the InServ while the GUI is

running, it may cause the GUI to crash. This is because of

incompatibilities between the GUI and the data sent from the InServ.

Workaround - When the version of the InServ is changed, the GUI must

match that version. Before upgrading/downgrading the InServ, stop all

GUI sessions. After installing the InServ, make sure to install the

    compatible client software.

    JVM Not FoundError During

    Installation onSolaris (Bug

    6113)

Occasionally on Solaris, installation will fail with an error JVM not

found. This is caused by Solaris mounting the cdrom with a # character

in the mount point (typically, /cdrom/inform_adm_tools#1). InstallShield will fail when the mount point contains special characters

    such as #.

Workaround - See Installation Notes above for specific workaround

    instructions.

    Out of MemoryError when

    Plotting ManyStatistics for an

    Extended Periodof Time

    (Bug 9878)

The amount of time that it takes to consume all memory is dependent

on how many total statistics plots are simultaneously attempted.

    Workaround - Possible workarounds:

1 Limit the amount of memory used by plotting fewer statistics or plot

    statistics in separate GUI sessions.

2 Increase the initial amount of memory the GUI is allowed to use. This

will ensure that the GUI has memory pre-allocated and thus will not fail

due to memory being consumed by other applications. This can be done

by passing an argument in the form of Xmsm when starting the GUI. This option should be used carefully. If the GUI cannot allocate the

initial memory, it will fail to execute. Also, if the GUI is not being heavily

used, or the InServs it is communicating with do not have a large

amount of events, having the GUI allocate large amounts of memory is

wasteful and prevents other applications from utilizing it.

3 Increase the maximum amount of memory the GUI is allowed to use.

This can be done by passing an argument in the form of Xmxm when starting the GUI. The default is 64MB and the maximum will

depend on how much memory you have on your system.3.73PAR InForm Administration Tools Release Notes

    Drive Cage DetailScreen Cannot

    Detect Servicingof FC-ALs

    (Bug 9950)

If the servicecage command is issued to prepare a cage FCAL card for servicing, the GUI cannot detect this and indicate to the user that the

data on the Drive Cage Detail screen may be out of date.

Workaround - As a workaround, always refresh the data after doing

administration on the InServ Storage Server.

    GUI Fatal ErrorWhen Blockedfrom Listening

    for NetworkConnections(Bug 10812)

If InForm GUI is run on a system running a firewall, the firewall may

need to be configured to allow the JVM to listen for and accept inbound

connections. If listening is prevented the GUI will exit indicating an

internal error. If listening is allowed but inbound connections blocked,

the GUI will function normally with the exception that the GUI will not

receive new events or indicate when displayed data is stale.

Workaround - Consult the documentation provided with your firewall,

if any, for how to allow applications to listen for and accept inbound

    connections.

    UpdatingTemplate doesntUpdate Enabled

    State of VVSettings

    (Bug 11131)

If the user has selected a template during VV creation, then realizes

some of the template settings are incorrect and changes the template,

the VV screen will not be automatically updated with those changes.

Workaround - Re-select the template in the Template pulldown

control on the VV Creation screen. This will refresh the template

    properties.

NOTE: The servicecage command is for service personnel only.3PAR InForm Administration Tools Release Notes

The user attempted to disable an allocation warning or limit for a CPG

or TPVV by entering the value 0. This is not allowed, since zero is a valid

    time.

Workaround - To disable warnings and limits, remove all text from the

    SystemConnection(Bug 18431)

Some users have reported an intermittent problem during initial

connection to an InServ where the GUI will display a message box

indicating that "SCSI-3 Reservations failed to load".

Workaround - Click OK on the message box to dismiss it. The SCSI3

reservation data will be available when navigating to the VV screens.

    Apply andRepeat does notRemember Disk

    Filter Settingsduring VV

    Creation(Bug 20539)

When creating multiple VVs using the Apply and Repeat button in the

VV Creation screens, the settings that were used for disk filtering are

    not remembered for subsequent VVs.

Workaround - Re-enter the disk filtering information for each VV

    created.

NOTE: Enhancements to the logging on both the GUI and InServ GUI

server have been added to gather more information about this

problem. Also, related fixes to the GUI server process on the InServ may

New -lw to the statvlun command provides the WWN or iSCSI Name in the output. This is especially useful when multiple WWNs/iSCSI Names

belonging to the same host are visible on the same port.

Physical Disks The admitpd command has been changed so that no arguments are required when using the -nold option. This allows admitting of multiple disks while simultaneously marking them not to be used for logical disk

    creation.

Ports New -iscsi and -iscsiname options to the showport command provides information on iSCSI ports.

New -sfp and -d options to the showport command provide summary and detail information for small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical

    transceiver modules (E200 systems).

New controliscsiport command provides ability to configure iSCSI ports.

New showiscsisession command shows information about active iSCSI sessions for each iSCSI port.

New showportarp command shows ARP table information for iSCSI ports.

New showportisns command shows Internet Storage Name Service (iSNS) information for iSCSI ports.

The controlport command will now print a warning when executing either the ct or the persona subcommands when the result of the command changes the connection type of the port and the operation is

being done on an LSI port. This is because a hard reset will be issued to

the port which will also affect the other port in this port pair.

Remote Copy New over_per_alert/no_over_per_alert policies to the setrcopygroup command allow users to specify whether or not an alert should be

generated if a synchronization of a periodic remote copy group takes

longer to complete than its synchronization period. The default

behavior is to generate an alert.

New tunelinks subcommand to the setrcopytarget command allows users to adjust the performance values for the target's links.3PAR InForm Administration Tools Release Notes

  • 3PAR InForm Operating System and Administration Tools Release Notes

New -d option to the showrcopy command provides more detailed configuration information.

New -f option to the stoprcopy command allows users to override the confirmation when using the -clear option.

Security The createuser and setpassword commands now enforces a minimum length of 6 characters for passwords.

The removeuser command will return an error if an attempt is made to remove a user that is currently logged into the system.

Service New -ovrd option to movech allows chunklets to be moved even if it results in a loss of quality. This is only used in conjunction with a

permanent move via the -perm option. Also, the -perm option now allows users to specify just a source address. This effectively permanently

sets the chunklets into their current location and discards their original

    location.

New -nodisks option to the servicemag command is available for use in conjunction with the -log option. This allows the user to specify clearly that if a magazine with all valid drives is being serviced, then

either the -pdid option has to be used to specify the PD to be replaced, or the -nodisks option has to be used to specify that no PDs need to be replaced and only the magazine needs to be reseated or replaced.

The servicehost command has been modified to accept iSCSI Names as input.

New locatesys command helps users locate systems by blinking the node status LEDs on each node of the storage system. Users can also

choose whether or not to blink the cage LEDs.

SNMP The setsnmppw command has been changed to accept community strings up to 50 characters in length to match the capabilities of the 3PAR MIB.3.133PAR InForm Administration Tools Release Notes

If the user chooses storage settings for set size and availability such that

the desired set size exceeds the availability level, the volume creation

will fail with an error that states that not enough space could be found.

As an example, if the availability is set to Cage and the set size is 4, the

system will look to lay out the volume across four cages. If the system

does not have this many cages, the command will fail.

The error text makes it seem like the amount of storage is the issue,

rather than the number of available resources (cages, magazines, etc.).

The error message text has been modified to clarify the nature of the

Workaround - Make sure arguments for availability and set size match

cannot remove the last path to a disk. Upon such a failure, however, the

command does not clean up and put the disks that it had processed back

    on the loop.

Workaround - First, to avoid the failure, make sure all disks that are in

the cage being serviced show a State of OK on the loop opposite of the

    one being serviced.

Second, to bring physical disks back on the loop manually, use the

    controlmag command.
