Keeping sa ety basics top-o -mind can helpprevent losses rom occurring and help you avoid need-less hassle and property damage - and in some situations,injury to you or your loved ones.

Follow these easy pointers to make grilling safer:

* Keep barbecue grills on a level sur ace away rom thehouse, garage and, most importantly, children and pets.When grilling on your patio, make sure that all urnitureand accessories are ar rom the grill. On balconies, it isalways sa er to move estivities to available lawn space.Never grill inside the home or garage, even i it is raining.

* For gas grills, always store gas cylinders outside andaway rom your house, and be sure the valves are turnedo when not in use. Check the tubes regularly or crack-ing, brittleness, and leaks in the connections. To deter-mine i there is a leak, simply pour soapy water over theline with the gas valve turned open. I gas is escaping,bubbles will appear. Should you detect a leak, immedi-ately turn o the gas and dont use the grill until the leak is repaired.

* Your grill generates high temperatures, so keep it cov-ered whenever possible. Keep lighted cigarettes, matchesand open ames away rom the grill, and move gas hosesas ar away as possible rom hot sur aces and grease. Usea can to catch excess grease.

* Make certain your grill is kept at least 2 to 3 eet awayrom wood or vinyl siding. Placing the grill too close to

your home, especially one with vinyl siding, can result inmelting or burning, or even a fre. Also, keep in mind thatwhile vinyl siding and composite decking have a higher

burn point than wood, its alsoeasier or these materials to meltand discolor, which can result in

a costly claim or property damage.

* For charcoal grills, use only starter uids designed oryour grill and never use gasoline. Limit the amount o

uid used. I the fre is too low, use dry kindling and addmore charcoal, i necessary. To avoid a ash fre - a frethat spreads rapidly through the vapors o an ignitableliquid - never add more liquid uel to a lighted grill.

* When using bamboo or wood skewers, soak them incool water prior to use so they wont ignite on the grill.

* Keep a fre extinguisher accessible and never leave agrill unattended once it has been lit. I an extinguisherisnt available, consider keeping a bucket o sand or agarden hose nearby.
