It was just over a year ago that

    Hurricane Irene hit northern

    New Jersey. The rains came

    followed by the horrific flooding

    ravaging many homes in the

area. Those of you affected by

the flooding know the devasta-tion of losing homes, businesses,

    churches and ultimately pre-

    cious memories. I can still

    remember peoples lives spread

out on their lawns or set at the

    curb, including mine. Yet

    through this tragedy, there were

    so many unaffected that reached

out and helped those in need. I

    can still remember the people

that came and assisted our fami-

ly; they will always hold a spe-cial place in our hearts. They

    werent thinking of themselves

at that time; they heard a call for

    help and responded.

    We have since restored our

home and it just recently started

to feel like home where we could

    feel comfortable. We were so

    grateful this year

    that we made it

    through the sum-

    mer with no hurri-

    canes. Who would

    have ever thought

    at the end ofOctober, only

    fourteen months

    after Irene, Super

    Storm Sandy

    would darken our

    doorways. If you

    were like me, you

were glued to the TV watching

    and tracking the storm.

    Well, you know the out-

    come; our gracious God had

mercy on northern New Jerseyfrom the devastation of flooding.

Yes, we had no power and the

lines for gas were long but He

    spared us from what couldve

    been horrible. Unfortunately for

    Southern New Jersey and New

York City, the storm was cata-

    strophic. People lost everything

some even lost their lives. I

was able to visit Brick several

times to help a friend that lost

her year-round home. As I drove

through the streets of purewreckage it was a familiar scene

    once again. Memories came

pouring in as I realized there has

to be something more we can do

to give back. I know what a

blessing others were to my fami-

ly in our time of tragedy; now its

our turn to offer it back.

    We will be collecting sup-

    plies for our neighbors over

    the next several weeks in

    hopes of making this devas-

tating time just a bit easier.

    As the Holidays are

approaching please considerdonating the following to

touch the lives of those who

    lost so much:

    Non-perishab le food, toi-

    letries, personal hygiene

    products, cleaning supplies

    and cleaning tools, baby

    items (especially diapers), paper

    goods, toilet paper, paper towels,

    bedding, blankets and yowels,

    new underwear only, coats, new

or gently used hats and gloves, food store gift cards, batteries,

    over-the-counter medication.

    The collection point in our

area will be in Spa 23, located at

    381 Route 23, Pompton Plains

    Collections will last now

    through November 28.

    Presidential elections

    are over! Obamacare is

    here to stay! Fiscal

    Cliff is on the horizon!

    Recession rearing! Inflationlooming! Anemic interest

    rates linger! Lousy stock mar-

    kets persist! Federal deficit

    increasing! Short sales and

    foreclosures mounting!

    Massive unemployment con-

    tinues! Hurricane Sandy

    aftermath: no power, no

    internet, no TV, no phones,

no heat, no school no gas, no

    patience, no paychecks, no

    fun, no kiddingwow! This

    makes me dizzy.

Hurricane winds, earth-quakes, fallen trees and other

bad news got you down? Feel

like you cant get off this

    train or merry-go-round ride?

Do you feel like throwing up?

    These last few weeks have

    been rather grating on the

    nerves. Even without power

or a working cable line for

more than 12 days, the head-

    lines listed above keep rever-

    berating in my head. Over

    the course of Sandy, my

smartphone was my only linkto the outside world. The

    Charnet world was temporar-

    ily one of Monopoly,

    Scrabble, Banana-Grams and

    Gin Rummy, which replaced

    the normal activities of inter-

    active video gaming murder

    and mayhem, DVDs and

    homework. After a few days

    our family got accustomed to

    using the bathroom in the

    dark, wearing jackets indoors

    and spending most of our

time together in one room(the one with the fireplace!).

    The smell of gasoline perme-

ated our home, as did the

    fumes from the generator.

    When my kids pulled up

to the gas pumps, the ques-

tion of cash or credit was

    replaced with Fill up your

tank or your gas cans? With

a $40 limit, it was simply one

or the other. And though it

    was aggravating and frustrat-

    ing waiting for JCP&L and

Optimum to show-up, werealized that we were truly

    blessed. With no injuries, no

    property loss and a generator

    at hand, we were considered

    among the fortunate. Those

around us did not possess a

generator, nor did they have a

    multitude of licensed chil-

dren to go to the gas pumps

    simultaneously to wait three

hours for a drop or two of gas.

As they waited in line, I wentto the hardware store for a 25

foot piece of plastic tubing to

siphon our vehicles if it came

    to that. A 100-foot extension

    cord from Lowe's cost $89

plus tax and I had to buy two.

    When added to the existing

    ones, it stretched 1,000 feet

    around and through my

    home.

    In NJ, 33 people per-

ished from the east coaststorm of the century named

    Sandy. The Jersey shore was

    smashed with property losses

in the billions, but more than

    that, irreplaceable mementos,

    pictures, collectibles and

    heirlooms, furniture and

    entire homes were gone,

    swallowed up by the Atlantic.

Most of us in the Wayne area

lost a little time, a week or

two without pay, and saw our

    blood pressure rise when

    waiting on the power compa-

ny as well as the internet

    provider. But by comparison

    to our brethren south and

east of us, we lost very little.

With our focus off Sandy, we

are ready to refocus on the

headlines once again.Back to the quest of finan-

    cial independence:

    Maximizing our income

    today while simultaneously

    preserving, protecting and

    perpetuating our wealth for

    tomorrow! We can return to

    the mission of eliminating,

    avoiding and deferring

    income taxes in addition to

    preparing for the effects of

the fiscal cliff brought onby the elimination of tax

    reductions, the increase in

    income tax rates and the

    addition of the Obamacare

    tax levies, along with the

    mandatory cuts in entitle-

    ment and military spending.

    Some experts predict increas-

    es in unemployment, decreas-

    es in stock prices, reductions

    T

    he tooth contains the

    pulp (nerve) in the

center, which is madeup of nerves and blood ves-

    sels. It provides feeling, as

well as new cells that repair

    the tooth. Diseases of this

    area are hidden inside the

    tooth, diagnosed by symp-

    toms, special tests, and X-

rays. Injury to the pulp can

    cause pulpitis, which causes

    sensitivity to different

    degrees.

Injury to the dental pulpcauses changes that build up

    over time and destroy the

nerve. Most of the time it is

    caused by deep tooth decay

    (bacteria), deep fillings,

    cracked teeth, broken fill-

ings, or trauma. If it is a mild

    injury, inflammation will

    occur and many times the

    pulp will repair itself. The

tooth will be sensitive to hot

and cold things, but thisshould go away in a short

period of time. If a long-

    standing injury is left with-

    out treatment, the tooths

    pulp will die. Sometimes the

pulp dies without any symp-toms and may only be detect-

ed if the tooth breaks, turns

dark, or shows up on an X-

    ray.

    Reversible pulpitis is

    mild inflammation and is

    capable of healing when

    treated by a dentist.

    Symptoms and signs include:

    1. Sensitivity to cold, sweets,

    and sometimes heat

    2. Pain stops in a few seconds3. Pain is short and sharp but

    doesnt occur by itself

    4. Pain caused by extreme

    temperatures, not mild ones

    Irreversible pulpitis is not

    capable of healing; the

    tooths pulp dies and infec-

    tion soon follows. Symptoms

    include:

    1. Lingering pain from hot or

cold2. Initial sharp pain to cold

    or hot

    3. Pain from mild tempera-

    tures

    4. A dull ache or throbbing

    pain

    5. Spontaneous pain that

wakes you up at night or

    when you lie down

    6. Swollen face

Part 4 of this series will

    conclude with diagnosis and

    treatment.

    Tax planning may

    seem too difficult in

    the current political

    and economic environment.

    But reviewing your tax situa-

    tion before the end of2012

will position you to act quick-

ly when the timing is right.

    Some rules that applied

    when you prepared your 2011

    federal income tax return

    have expired, others are

expected to expire at the end

of this year and new provi-

sions are slated to begin in

2013. Here are a few tax

    strategies to consider as year-

    end 2012 approaches.

    Review options for acceler-

    ating income

    The idea of paying feder-

al and state income tax early

    may make you wince, but

having a plan in place in case

    paying now results in saving

later is still a good idea. One

    reason: Some methods of

    pulling income from 2013

    into 2012 require time

time you may not have if you

    wait until the last minute.

    For instance, say a viable

    tax planning strategy

    involves taking a payroll

    bonus from your business at

    year-end. You might choose

to do this to take advantage

of the current reduced rate of

    4.2 percent for the employee

    portion of social security tax,

    which expires on December

31, 2012. Perhaps your goal is

to lower the amount of your

2013 income that will be sub-

ject to either the 3.8 percent

    or 0.9 percent Medicare sur-

    taxes taking effect next year.

    Or maybe you want addition-

al earned income so you can

    increase your retirement plan

    contribution.

    Timing matters if youre

    thinking of another tax plan-

    ning move: distributing a div-

    idend from your corporation

this year, while the maximumtax rate for qualified divi-

    dends is 15 percent.

    Retirement accounts

    also offer opportunities for

    accelerating income into

2012. If you turned 70 this

year and you expect to be

    subject to higher taxes in

2013, it may make sense to

    take your initial required

    minimum distribution by

    December 31 instead of wait-

    Over the past few

    years, how many

    times have you heard

    or asked that question? In

    Northern New Jersey, its

    starting to become as com-

    mon as Hello! People who

come into my store are always

    asking me about backup

    power solutions. After the

    severe power outages that we

    have suffered through last

    year with the blizzards, floods

    and hurricanes, the question

has been How do we keep

    our power on?

Up until last week, I was

    dismissing last year as an

    anomaly. Well, the anomaly

    is becoming a pattern. While

not a gambler, I do know and

believe a rule of gambling: If

    something happens twice, its

a streak. Well, here we are

    after the second straight year

    of prolonged power outages. I

    dont know whats causing

    weather changes, but I do

    know something has

    increased the severity of our

    weather. More multiple-day

    outages are to be expected.

    There are two practical

    solutions. Both include gain-

    ing independence from the

    utilities, thus reducing our

    dependence on them as a

    reliable power source. The

first solution is to install a

    standby power generator.

    Running off natural gas or

    propane, this solution can

satisfy at least your most crit-

    ical requirements for power.

    In most cases of severe

    weather, a generator allows

    families to continue to go

    about their daily routines of

    showering, cooking, heating,

    cooling and maintaining

    communications with the

rest of the world. They do

    have a downside. An endless

supply of gas is not guaran-

teed. As we recently saw, nat-

    ural gas companies were

    forced in many locations to

cut their supplies off due to

    danger of explosion. In these

    areas, the standby generators

did no good until supply lines

    were brought back online.

    Portable generators help also,

    but you need gasoline, which,

as weve seen, was not easy to

    come by.

    The second solution is

    the ideal solution. Installing

a solar system with a backup

    power supply can reduce your

    dependence on your utility.

    This technology is now an

    affordable alternative. The

way it works is simple: A grid-

    tied solar system on your

homes roof or in your yard

    generates power during the

day. The power first charges a

    set of batteries until fully

    charged, then provides elec-

tricity to offset the usage in

    your home. Any excess elec-

    tricity generated is sent back

    into the grid. Through net

    metering, you are paid nor-

mal retail rates for this elec-

    tricity by your utility.

    When utility power is

shut down due to an event

    such as Hurricane Sandy or

Katrina, or a major blizzard or

    earthquake, switches are acti-

    vated that redirect your

    power source completely to

    solar and battery backup. As

    long as we have daylight,

youll have power. If the sun

    should stop shinning, it wont

    matter anyway, as power

    wont be our biggest concern!

    Your homes usage dic-

tates how big of a solar system

youll need. The size of your

    backup battery system is

    dependent on how long youll

    want that usage to continue.

Sizing your system is key to

    providing the proper power

    levels. These backup systems

    can even be installed on

    homes with existing solar sys-

    tems.

    The one obstacle to

solar: not every home is solar

    worthy. In that case,

    a standby generator is

    the best solution. But,

    if you are solar wor-

    thy, installing solar

    with a battery backup

    system is your best bet

    to protecting your

    home and family.

    So, whats the best

    reply to Did you get

    power back yet?

    Well, homeowners

    with the solutions

    above can answer I

    Theres another great

    debate about the

    feline as a pet besides

    the declawing issue. This

    great debate concerns allow-

ing the feline to roam out-

    doors versus living indoors.

Should you allow your cat to

    roam outdoors? Lets find out.

    Outdoor Felines

    Cats are essentially wild

    creatures, and they have

    always loved the outdoors.

    What feline owner hasnt

watched his cat loll in a

patch of sunshine on a winter

    day, or roll contentedly in

the dirt in its own backyard?

    Cats do love the sunshine,

    the outdoors, and the fresh

    air. However, outdoor cats

    are susceptible to more dis-

    eases, more injuries, and

    more health problems.

    Outdoor cats may tussle

    with other cats, catch para-

sites or other diseases, or be

hit by a car or caught by

    other predators. They can

    also be poisoned by pesti-

    cides, antifreeze left unat-

    tended, or other toxins. They

    can cause problems with

    neighbors by using their

yards as a cat box. Outdoor

cats simply arent as safe as

    indoor cats.

    Indoor Felines

    Indoor cats live longer,

    healthier lives. Studies prove

    it and common sense dictates

    it. Indoor cats have many

    advantages outdoor cats cant

    hope to have. Outdoor cats

live on an average of 3 to 5

    years, while indoor cats live

an average of 12 years or

    more. My last indoor cats

lived to be 19 and nearly 21.

    Indoor cats enjoy safety

    and comfort. They are safe

    from diseases that feral cats

    may carry and outdoor cats

pick up. They are safe from

    cat fights, cars, and preda-

    tors. And, indoor cats wont

    harm other wildlife, such as

    birds and small animals.

    Alternatives

    There are many alterna-

    tives to the outdoor lifestyle.

    When kittens first come

    home, they should be kept

    indoors. If your cats miss

    their outdoor excursions, you

    might try to

    train them to

    wear a harness

    and walk on a

    leash. They will

    still be able to

    enjoy the out-

    doors, but much

    more safely.

    Another alter-

native is to create a safe

    outdoor area or run

    where the cats can go

    outside but cannot

    escape the area. There are

    many outdoor runs available

now that connect to a cat

door and allow the cat access

to a run on a patio or in a

    backyard.

    You can also allow the

cat outdoors on a patio or

    deck when you are outdoors,

and only for a short time. Or,

you can use a carrier to take

your kitty for walks in the

    sunshine.

    Keeping kitty indoors

    will keep it healthy, happy,

    and free of infectious diseases

    it might catch outside. Each

    pet owner is responsible for

    his own pets health and

    well-being. Keeping kitty

    inside is the choice that

    makes sense.

    public adjuster?

    Many people

    assume that the adjuster

    assigned to them from their

    insurance company is their

    adjuster. This is a common

    misconception of both home-

    owners and businesses. The

truth of the matter is that the

    adjuster from the aforemen-

    works solely for that insurance

company. Their job is to save

    their employer as much

    With the economy

    still struggling,

    money is tight for

    many homeowners. That reali-

ty can present a problem to

    those who want to improve

    their homes without spending

    too much money.

    The cost of a home

    improvement project

depends on a host of factors,

    including the scale of the

    project and the availability of

    materials. Upscale projects

    like a full roof replacement

    will set homeowners back a

    substantial amount of money.

    In its 2011-2012 Cost vs.

    Value Report, Remodeling

    magazine revealed that the

average cost of such a project

    was nearly $38,000.

    However, a smaller project

    like a garage door replace-

    ment could be completed for

    fewer than $3,000.

    When deciding if a home

    improvement project is within

your budget, its a good idea to

    consult such figures before

    choosing a project. For exam-

ple, if your home is a fixer-

    upper, then one project may

    not be more urgent than

    another, something that may

allow you to choose less expen-

    sive projects now while saving

    money for more expensive

    projects down the road.

    Its also important for

    homeowners to know that fig-

ures such as those in the Cost

vs. Value Report are just aver-

    ages. Some projects might cost

    more than the average, while

    others might come in well

    under budget. To ensure your

project is one of the latter and

    not the former, consider the

    following ways to trim

    costs off your next home

    improvement project.

    Avoid the DIY (do it

    yourself) movement if

    you dont have adequate

    experience. Many home-

    owners fall into the DIY

    trap, feeling they can

    pull off a project without

    hiring a professional con-

    tractor. While this is an

    option for those home-

    owners with home

    improvement experi-

    ence, its an approach

    thats best avoided by those

    without such experience.

    Homeowners who decide to go

it alone on a home improve-

    ment project should know that

    mistakes are costly. One mis-

take could have you paying for

    the same materials twice: once

    when you begin the project,

and then again when you need

to hire a contractor after your

efforts didnt work out. A failed

DIY project also costs you time, something homeowners hoping

    to sell their homes post-project

    cannot afford to waste.

    Hire the right contractor.

The best contractor for the job

    wont necessarily be the one

who comes in with the lowest

    estimate. The right contractor

will know how long a project

will take and what the materi-

als will cost. The wrong con-

    tractor, who might lack the

    experience of his competitors,

    might make empty promises

that ultimately cost you moremoney via overrun costs. Find

    a contractor who comes highly

    recommended and is willing to

    provide references and show

you his or her past projects like

the one youre hiring him or

her to undertake. If you hire

    the wrong contractor, the proj-

    ect may never be completed

and you may find yourself in

    court, where the money you

    had budgeted for home

    improvements is being spent

    on lawyers instead.

Consider supplying your ownmaterials. If you diligently

    research your project, you

should be able to buy the mate-

rials yourself, even if you plan

on hiring a contractor to do

    the work. Some contractors

mark up the materials as a

means of padding the bill. If

    you research the project and

    learn about the materials you

want to use, you can save a

    substantial amount of money

    buying those materials yourself

    and then hiring a contractor.

    Dont overlook recycledmaterials. Buying recycled

    materials is another way to

    reduce home improvement

    costs. Bathroom fixtures,

    doors, flooring, and lighting

are just a few of the materials

    that are commonly recycled

and resold at a fraction of the

    cost of new materials. Shop

around for stores in your area

or peruse the Internet for recy-

    cled materials. Homeowners

    undertaking a replacement

    project rather than a remodel

might even be eligible for taxbreaks if they donate their old

    materials.

    Choose projects that provide

    more bang for your buck.

Another way to save is to

    choose projects that provide a

    strong return on your invest-

    ment. The Cost vs. Value

    Report compares the cost of

    popular remodeling projects

    with the value those projects

retain at resale. If money is a

    motivating factor behind your

    project, choose a project that

will get you the most moneyback at resale.

    While the economy has

    not necessarily been kind to

    the home improvement indus-

try, there are still plenty of

    homeowners looking to

    improve their homes. Savvy

    homeowners can do just that

    and save some money along

the way by putting a few strate-

    gies to work for them.

    Though ceiling fansare mostly associated

    with warm-weather

    seasons, most can be effec-

    tive throughout the winter

    months as well, helping cir-

    culate warm air throughout a

room in much the same way

    they circulate cool air during

    the warmer weather. Most of

    today's fans have a switch

    near the motor housing that

alters the direction in whichthe fan's blades turn. When a

ceiling fan is used in the sum-mer, its blades push the air

    downward, moving cool air

    around the room. The air

    blowing around the room is

    what cools people within the

    room. When the blades'

    direction is altered, the

    blades then push the air

    upward toward the ceiling.

This drives the hot air, which

    typically rises to the top,

down toward the edges of theroom. This helps circulate

warm air throughout a room, making for more even heat-

    ing. Whats more, this

    improved heat circulation

    helps combat window sweat-

    ing that results from conden-

sation on the glass when hot

    air is not effectively circulat-

    ed throughout a home.

    With all of the

    recent devastationand stress inflicted

    on us from Hurricane Sandy

    and Superstorm Athena, this

    years Thanksgiving might

    seem like another burden

    around the corner. It seems

like we just got back to normal

and now Thanksgiving is onlya week away; time for some

    holiday stress. Wayne

    Chateau, located on Hamburg

    Turnpike in Wayne, provides

    an alternative to the hectic

    preparation for the imminent

    feast. Instead of fighting for

the last turkey in the super-market and slaving away all

    day in the kitchen, celebrate

    Thanksgiving at Wayne

    Chateau at their Thanksgiving

    Day Buffet. Everything you

    could possibly want for a

    Thanksgiving feast will be

served. Turkey, mashed pota-toes, cranberry sauce, stuffing,

    vegetables, and pies are just

some of the menu items that

will be included in the all-you-

    can-eat buffet.

    Wayne Chateau is a fam-

    ily owned restaurant that pro-

    vides excellent and friendly

    service. You will practically

feel like you are at home cele-

    brating Thanksgiving with

    your own family.Aside from the

    Thanksgiving Day buffet, the

    menu ranges over many differ-

    ent food styles such as

    Americana, Chinese, Italian,

    Sushi, and Fish. The dinner

    menu also includes filet

    mignon and lobster; some of

    the most popular menu items.

    The buffet also offers many

entre and side items so that

    there is something for every-one.

    I found the atmosphere of

    Wayne Chateau to be reminis-

cent of a Vegas style buffet.

    even after the beginning of

    the year.Roth conversions pro-

    vide future-year tax breaks,

    too. Unlike traditional IRAs,

    withdrawals from Roth

    accounts are not mandatory.

When you do choose to take

them, they are not subject to

    the new 3.8 percent Medicare

    surtax, nor are they included

    in figuring the taxable

    amount of your social security

    benefits.

Regular income taxplanning is only one factor in

    the decision to increase cur-

    rent-year income.

    The alternative minimum tax

    (AMT) is another. The last

    annual AMT "patch" expired

at the end of 2011 and youll

    want to understand your

    exposure based on current

    rules.

    Dont overlook less obvious

    income

At this point in 2012,you have a fairly complete

picture of your income for the

    year from sources such as

    salary, retirement plan distri-

    butions, and dividends. The

    total of those, combined with

    other predictable income

    items, provides a good start-

    ing point for tax planning

    one youll want to augment

    by thinking about less obvi-

    ous additions to income.

An example is taxablecapital gains distributed by

    mutual funds. These differ

    from the gain you recognize

    when you sell mutual fund

    shares you own. Capital gain

    distributions from funds

    occur when a fund manager

    makes a profit selling invest-

    ments the fund owns. Those

    gains are passed to sharehold-

    ers, and you generally have

    no control over the timing.

The distributed gains are tax-able even if you reinvest

    them in additional shares,

and in some cases can impact

    the AMT computation.

    Check with your mutual fund

    provider before assuming

    youve captured all your

    income for 2012.

    Another potential item

    thats easy to overlook: a

    2010 Roth conversion. If you

opted to spread the tax over

two years, youll need toinclude the second half on

    your 2012 federal income tax

    return.

    That will increase your

    income, which in turn can

    affect your marginal tax

    bracket, taxable social securi-

ty benefits and how much of

    your rental real estate activi-

Alot of work and effort goes into putting on a musical thats without a hurricane. Thanks

to Sandy, Rhino Theatres tech week was devastated and shortened by the storm.

They were scrambling to find gas to get to and from the theater for rehearsals.

Despite these setbacks, How to Succeed in Business Without ReallyTrying opened on

November 2 right on schedule. Their ensemble of talented, dedicated actors, musicians and crew

pulled together in team spirit because the show must go on. They invite you to come see this

wonderfully entertaining musical, and let the magic of the theater take you away from your worries.

Share their enthusiasm and enjoy the show! There is still one weekend of shows remaining,

Nov 23, 24, and 25. Friday and Saturday are at 8pm, Sunday at 2pm. Ticket prices are $25 foradults, $22 for seniors and $20 for children, plus tax. Group rates are available.

For tickets call 973-248-9491.Visit Rhino Theatres website at www.RhinoTheatre.com.
