September 18, 2015

MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine women’s golf team has won three consecutive titles at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and will go for its fourth straight crown next week. Pepperdine has won four of the six times this tournament has been held, which annually brings together a single representative from a number of different conferences.

EVENT INFO — The tournament will be held at the par-72, 6,249-yard Fazio Course at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo. Eighteen holes will be played each day between Monday and Wednesday (Sept. 21-23). Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.

FIELD — The tournament features 18 teams representing 18 different conferences. In addition to Pepperdine, the other schools are Arizona State, Boston College, Campbell, Denver, Florida International, Jacksonville, Lamar, Long Beach State, Memphis, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico State, San Diego State, TCU, Toledo, Troy and Wichita State.

PEPPERDINE LINEUP — The Waves’ lineup consists of senior Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS), sophomore Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia/Shenton College), freshman Patricia Wong (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS), sophomore Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C./Zhuji Hailiang Private School) and freshman Hannah Haythorne (Honolulu, Hawaii/IMG Academy).

RANKINGS — Pepperdine was ranked 18th in Golfweek’s preseason countdown, while Chow was rated among the top 20 players in the country.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY — The Waves won the inaugural tournament in 2009 and posted victories in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Pepperdine edged Tennessee by one stroke to win last year’s event. The Waves have also had the last two individual winners, Grace Na in 2013 and Marissa Chow in 2014.

CHOW — Senior Marissa Chow is a two-time All-American, having earned third team status from Golfweek each of the past two years. She was 15th (a second team selection) on Golfweek’s preseason list of the nation’s top players.

Chow, the 2015 WCC Player of the Year and medalist at the WCC Championships, ended last season ranked #22 nationally by Golfweek/Sagarin and averaged 73.04 strokes per round (#8 in Pepperdine single-season history).

Her career average of 73.34 currently ranks second all-time at Pepperdine, and she’s also fourth in below-par rounds (26) and 10th in both top 10 fi nishes (13) and top 20 results (19).

During summer 2014, she played in the U.S. Open (and actually led early in the fi rst round when she birdied four of the fi rst six holes).

OTHERS — Juniors Alessandra Arza and Andrea Unson saw limited action their fi rst two years. Sophomores Tatiana Wijaya and Katherine Zhu were regulars last season, and Wijaya was the WCC’s Freshman of the Year. Pepperdine has added true freshmen Hannah Haythorne and Patricia Wong to the roster.

HONORS — Chow and Wijaya were on the preseason All-WCC team and the Waves were picked by the coaches to win their 15th consecutive league crown.

2015-16 SEASON — A 15th consecutive West Coast Conference title and the team’s 12th trip to the NCAA Championships are among the goals for the Pepperdine women’s golf team. Laurie Gibbs is in her 23rd season as head coach. The seven-player breakdown is one senior, two juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen. The Waves have fi ve returners (three of whom were in the lineup for the 2015 WCC Championships and NCAA South Bend Regional).

BRUIN WAVE INVITATIONAL — For the seventh straight season, Pepperdine and UCLA will work together to put on the Bruin Wave Invitational. The 2016 version (Feb. 29-March 1), which includes 16 top teams, will head to a new venue and will be played at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.

ONLINE — Follow the Pepperdine women’s golf team on Twitter (@WavesGolf) and on Facebook (/WavesGolf).

PEPPERDINE GOLF HISTORY — Under the direction of Laurie Gibbs, who is now in her 23rd season as head coach, Pepperdine has been established as one of the nation’s top golf programs. The Waves have appeared in the NCAA Championships 11 times in 17 years, with eight top-10 fi nishes and four top-fi ve showings, including a program-best second-place result in 2003. The Waves have won West Coast Conference championships in 17 of the last 18 years, including a current streak of 14 titles that began in 2002. Twelve different players have earned All-American honors a total of 27 times. LPGA Tour players have included Katherine Hull, Lindsey Wright, Tamie Durdin, Nadina (Taylor) Light, Misun Cho, Carolina Llano, Danielle Kang and Taylore Karle. Hull was the 2003 National Player of the Year and was inducted into the WGCA

Hall of Fame in 2012. Kang won back-to-back U.S. Amateur Championships in 2010 and 2011. Gibbs has been honored 12 times as the WCC’s Coach of the Year, was tabbed the West Region Coach of the Year on two occasions and was selected the 2004-05 National Coach of the Year by Golfweek magazine.

ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY — Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in fi ve different men’s sports — one of just 17 schools to have accomplished this feat — and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affi liated with a “major” conference. The Waves have won a total of 25 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that’s given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, Calif., the university overlooks the

Pacifi c Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation’s most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affi liated with the Church of Christ, ranks #52 overall on U.S. News and World Report’s list of America’s best colleges.
