Letter from the Executive Director

It’s been a busy year, with barely a moment to catch our breath. It was a great year – except for the continued need in our community. Our food pantry is feeding slightly fewer families compared with last year. SNAP benefits (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or Food Stamps) is operating a bit better after last year’s crisis. Striking, though, is the increase in numbers of children in the families we serve: up to 11,000 from 9,000. Everyone we feed is getting more fresh and frozen produce and meat. We’ve taken steps to focus on nutrition as well as hunger. No need to choose, we can do both and will keep doing more thanks to our dedicated gardeners and growing partnership with the Interfaith Food Shuttle. Our clinic is humming. We continue to meet quality standards for the treatment of persons with diabetes and hypertension, improving their metrics as well as most private practices do. What’s more, for two years in a row our clients tell us they feel better, miss work less often, and require fewer hospital visits. Our quantitative and qualitative measures of success are solid, and envied by some. The Helen Wright Center for Women had the rough year we thought it would have. There are more homeless women on ur streets and they are just a bit more challenging to assist. The economy is improving and 70% of women can leave the program employed, but more and more employment is less than full time and only at minimum wage. Women stayed with us longer, reflecting the increasing complexity of cases appearing at our doorstep. Our overhead remains low, our audits are clean, and banks see us as low-risk. Two years ago we cut the budget and cut some positions to make up for an expected drop in revenue from an expiring contract. No cuts now. In fact, we have been able to grow a modest but important reserve to smooth over the ups and downs of seasonal fundraising. Donors have responded to our fiduciary oversight with increased support, though we and all nonprofits continue to seek non-restricted revenue that pays for the small administration we have. But we can’t stand still. Food insecurity continues to grow. The ACA (Affordable Care Act) helped insure hundreds of our clients but so many more remain uninsured and lack access to affordable healthcare. There are more single adult homeless women to assist. We’re grateful for a new grant to grow our clinic by a third, and another small grant to bring additional and much-needed case management to the Helen Wright Center. We’ve embarked on a new initiative in our pantry to improve nutrition while filling empty stomachs.

It’s been a good year! With your help, we plan on

another one with more to come.
