Sundial Square is hosting Summer Sounds this Friday. It’s a free concert featuring some of the region’s top acts. What is the best band you have, or would like to see, live?

Sue Hone, Richmond.

“I would like to see Six60 be-cause I missed them recently. I saw Queen live in the 80’s, it was amazing, just the whole stage show.”

Teresa Burgess, Richmond.

“I know I can’t, but I would have like to have seen Elvis live. Mum has always loved him and I got to love him through her.”

Levi Derrett, Richmond.

“The best I’ve seen is Six60. I saw them at Homegrown on the weekend.”

Jude Munro, Richmond.

“I would have liked to have seen ABBA. I put their music on every morning.”

Bouncy castle event a big hitA free event organised by a local bouncy castle business was visited by more than 400 people on the weekend.Jim Thomas, owner of Blast Bouncy Castles, held the community event which featured more than 15 bouncy castles and other activities. He says he didn’t have any expec-tations for participants but was blown away by the number of people that turned up, despite an overcast day. “Yeah, it was a good turnout eh. The feedback from eve-ryone was that it was good to see

a free community event basically,” says Jim.Jim estimated 400 people, but says it was hard to tell because of a con-stant flow as the day wore on. Even at 2pm, when it was scheduled to finish, it was still busy with people on the castles.Have a Blast Day is likely to be-come an annual event he says. It was inspired by the continued increase in price of other events within the community. The winner of the $150 bouncy castle voucher was Claire Brown.

Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne says it would be great to have as a motorsport venue, however the merits of the site in question are still up for discussion between the applicants and the local people. “If there is support from people with funding to bring it about then it would be a good thing to have,” he says.Garry says it could be up to individual groups to push for their own funding, like Saxton Field. Adcock & Donaldson Properties Ltd own the 203 hectare block of land in the upper reaches of

the Stanley Brook. The site is approximately 50 kilometres outside Richmond. The consent meeting will be held at the Tapaw-era Rugby Clubrooms over a three day period from March 19. Independent commissioners are coming from around the country. If it is a favourable outcome Garry says they will be able to get on with in depth planning. “So far what we’ve done is all conceptual, on top of the feasibility study. We know it can be done but we just need to get into the nuts and bolts.”Those interested in supporting the motorsport park can visit www.centralmotorsport.org.nz.

One of Richmond’s oldest sporting clubs has sold up and is preparing to join forces with Club Waimea. The Richmond Bowling Club an-nounced last week that is has sold its bowling greens and clubrooms at Lower Queen St and will make the short move to Club Waimea. The owners of Oakwoods, which sits in the middle of the two properties, has bought the land, subject to approval from the Overseas Investment Office. The move has been on the cards for several years as the club has struggled to sustain rising costs and declining membership. But Club Waimea president and long time Rich-mond Bowls Club member, John Allan says the

move is positive for the both groups, combining resources and facilities. “To me it’s a win/win situation. “It should be very good for both clubs.”The bowls club will use money raised from the sale to upgrade the greens at Club Waimea.

John says the merger will put an injec-tion of members into Club Waimea and will give the bowls club fantastic facili-ties. “The bowling club will be just an-other addition to the many sports and community groups that are based at Club Waimea.”The Richmond Bowls Club was formed in 1919 and was home to a national

champion as late as 2009. It is expected that Oakwoods would not start construction for 15 months, allowing the club to use the greens for the coming season if the site at Club Waimea was not ready.

Some of the region’s most successful acts will take to Sundial Square this Friday evening for the fourth annual Summer Sounds concert. The Peasants, who broke into the Top 20 New Zealand Singles Charts this week, Battle of the Bands winners Patcha Atma, Master Pilot Soundsystem and Ranger Danger will all take to the stage. This will be one of the first public concerts that the Peasants will perform following the release of their debut single Letting Go.The seven piece Garin College act are the current national Smokefreerockquest winners.Pacha Atma Sound System is literally a melt-ing pot of world musicians, with members from New Zealand, Chile and the UK. They integrate the sounds of hand drums, per-cussion and didgeridoos with guitars, bass and electronics producing a sound which is a heady mix of the organic and the electronic, fused into a churning urn of burning world funk, drum n bass, ska, pachanga, house, dub, acid jazz, retro R&B and roots. The band has had a rapid rise from sweaty begin-nings playing regular nights during the winter of

2010, to being voted winners of The Woodstock Battle of the Bands 2011. They recently won an enthusiastic wider audi-ence after playing to 5000 rugby fans before the Rugby World Cup final at the Trafalgar Street Fanzone. Event organiser and Tasman District Council community recreation officer Paul McConachie is ecstatic with the calibre of bands lined up to play. “Having all these bands together sharing the stage on the same night is going to be one con-cert that should not be missed,” he says. Complementing the bass pumping beats from the stage will be an amusement and activity sec-tion featuring a portable skatepark facility, as well as Blast Inflatable Boxing and Sumo Wres-tling stations.A selection of Nelson-Tasman’s tastiest food stalls will also be along, keeping nutritional lev-els in check and providing the fuel to dance the night away.Summer Sounds begins at 5pm this Friday and entry is entirely free. It is likely to finish around 11pm.

Biggest A&P show for 5 yearsThe Murchison A&P Show enjoyed its biggest turn out for at least five years, on Saturday.Held at the Murchison Domain, organ-isers were absolutely ecstatic with the number of people that arrived, includ-ing hundreds from outside of the town-ship.Organiser Sue Cooper says the turnout was a direct result of keeping the price down and good advertising. “We believe it was the best attended show in at least the last five years,” she says. “I reckon there were about 1400 there. We did a bit more advertising this year and we think that is paying off.”Organisers will confirm the numbers in the coming days.Talking to other shows within the re-gion, Sue was surprised that the turnout

was so great. “What a lot of people com-mented on was our low charge for entry after some other events in Richmond and Brightwater charged so much.”Some of the most popular activities were new for this year including the Mur-chison Challenge which saw competi-tors carry a pig on their back whilst run-ning through an obstacle course. There was also a car crushing demo, sheep sheering, the blokes cooking com-petition – where they had to make ei-ther pavlova or dog biscuits – and a lolly scramble. “The blokes cooking contest was a real talking point,” says Sue.Sue says the feedback from stall holders was very positive. The weather on Saturday was also “per-fect” and didn’t shy anyone away. “It was a typical sunny show day.”

Crew ready to douse competitorsMembers of the Richmond Volunteer Fire Bri-gade have spent hours and hours trying to save just four seconds. Those four seconds are what separates them from the leaders ahead of next month’s South Island Waterway Challenge in Methven. The team heads down south this Friday before competition starts on March 10.Craig Piner says the team is a lot more confi-dent following their efforts at the West Coast Championship last month. “We’ve concentrat-ed on three or four runs to get them right and we’ve cut good time off. So on those particular runs we are very confident that we will be right up there with the top teams,” he says. With only members from Takaka and Rich-

mond competing locally, Craig says going to the coast benefited them immensely. There are nine different runs that each team must complete. Trophies are handed out to each winner, but there is also an overall cham-pionship.Richmond is a former national champion, but have only just returned to the Waterway Chal-lenge after a 25 year absence.Craig says the skills are definitely beneficial for fire fighters. “You know people who have done this because when they’re on an actual fire beam they can run the hose a lot quicker and they are thinking ahead. It obviously helps, but there is a fun aspect to it as well.”Nelson is likely to form a team for future events.

NEWS IN BRIEFPASSENGER NUMBERS UP AT AIRPORT: The number of passengers flying into Nel-son Airport last year was the highest ever, according to statistics released this week.Just under 775,000 passengers either took off or landed at the airport, an increase of 7 per cent on the year before for the country’sfourth busiest airport. The figures are in line with those released a fortnight ago which show Tasman and Nelson are the fastest and third fastest growing regions in the country. Nelson Airport Ltd chief ex-ecutive, Kaye McNabb, says that passenger numbers for each month in 2011 exceeded any of the figures from previous years.

SUPPORT GROWS FOR PURPLE CAKE DAY: Schools, pre-schools and communi-ties from Nepal to California and through-out New Zealand will celebrate Purple Cake Day on 1 March this year, giving a big “thumbs up” to the two year old children’s charity. Purple Cake Day, established by Nelson woman Emily Sanson-Rejouis fol-lowing the loss of her husband and two of her pre-school daughters in the Haiti earth-quake in 2010, has been approached by schools internationally which want to make the celebration a part of their annual calen-dar. Last year proceeds were sent to Haiti and Christchurch. In Nelson, where the event was widely celebrated in 2011, there is again significant school and community involvement. Some retailers are going pur-ple for the whole week.

OFFICER RISKS LIFE TO SAVE MAN: A Nelson Police Officer is being hailed a hero after putting his own safety at risk to save the life of another man on Thursday night. The officer was called to an incident in which he was required to extricate a man from a running vehicle inside a locked ga-rage about 11pm yesterday. Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Steve Greally said the Officer had to break a window to enter the building, extricate the man from the vehicle and then open a door which had been pinned shut before dragging the man to safety. The victim is in Nelson Hospital and expected to make a full recovery.

Math students win online stock market gameIf only the money was real. Four Garin College students, Jack Keenan, Sam Harrison, Frank Quin and Jansson Ford, could have made a mint off the stock market, showing their brilliance in an online competition contested by 80 groups worldwide. The competition ran from September to Decem-ber, with contestants having to spend a theoreti-cal $100,000 on the stock market to see who could make the most profit.Within the timeframe of the game they have to buy and sell stocks on the American market. Not only are they competing against other schools around

the world but also against the S&P 500.Garin College students have been competing in the competition since 2008.Garin College mathematics teacher Amy Corneli-son says it is the second time one of her students have taken out The Stock Market Game. “We’ve taken second a third previously, so we’ve done quite well,” she says. There is some luck involved, but Amy says it gives students an idea on how the stock market works. “You have to be able to choose companies which you think are going to do well, which takes not only luck but the understanding of graphs and highs and lows and 52 week trends.”The students earned school badges for their efforts.

What to wear to work? If you look through your wardrobe and decide it is time to liven up your professional look, then I suggest you make time to visit Jacqui E. They have the working week covered by a range of tailored suiting, smart separates and contemporary shirt and blouse options. The store has a smart personal feel as you walk around the perfectly placed items. The inspiration is a contemporary style from smart work wear and versatile casual to the perfect piece for a special occasion. I am always impressed by the quality of fabrics and styling. Congratulations to our winner from the Valentines promotion, Racheal Brown who shopped at Cotton On kids. Racheal enjoyed a lovely Valentine’s Day lunch at Morrison Street Café and then went on to spend her gift voucher in the centre. We are starting our Fashion Island Mall Fit programme today which will run every Tuesday at 5.45pm. We will be meeting outside The Rock Box in Fashion Island, so grab a friend, even your dog, and your sneakers and we will be heading up The Centre of NZ.Look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island. There was a lot going through Phillippa Wood’s head as she flew solo above the skies of Woodbourne.Without her instructor’s voice echoing her in ear, she was desperately trying to remember everything she had learnt in just nine hours of air time prior to her

solo take off.The 18 year-old former Waimea College student spent 10 days in Woodbourne on a Cadet Power Flying course. It was only on that course that she took the reigns at flying a plane.Flight sergeant Phillippa joined Air Training Corps when she was just 13 years-old. But you can only fly solo once

you are 16 years-old.You must apply for the course before 35 of them are selected to join. Phillippa was one of only two females. She says it is hard to describe the feeling of flying a plane. “When you’re up in the air it’s a little bit scary to begin with. But we’ve done the cir-cuit so many times before that it just seemed normal in a way,” she says. “You’re always more worried that you’re go-ing to forget something, but they have drilled it into you so many times.”The hardest part of the flight was landing the plane, she says.Phillippa wants to join the New Zealand Air Force in the coming years and has already

applied. “So hopefully I’ll go into that, but if not, I definitely want to keep fly-ing.”She says the cost of flying is a barrier to flying regularly, but joining an aero club is an option to work towards her private pilot license. “At the moment it is quite expensive to fly, so that might be some-thing I look at doing a bit later on.”She also won a prize from Mount Cook Airlines and the award from Women in Flying.Sergeant James Quickfall also did the powered flying course from the Nelson unit. James had already flown solo pre-viously so he participated in some more advanced flying.Nick Thompson and Izzy Prattley at-tended the Bushcraft Course held at Dip Flat, both completing and passing the demanding course. There are 40 cadets in the 23 Squadron Nelson and joining is easy.Phillippa says potential cadets can just come along to the unit’s headquarters on Dakota Drv on Monday nights dur-ing the school term. The parade nights start at 6.30pm and any interested is welcome to see what is involved. For further information see the website at www.nelsonatc.co.nz or phone Caroline on 544 0584.

GOING SOLO: Phillippa Wood, 18, recently spent 10 days in Woodbourne learning to fly an aircraft solo.

Hold on to your berets and pack a baguette or two because for the first time Nelson will be one of the hosting centres for the French Film Festi-val. Running from March 14 to 25 at the Suter Cinema, organisers say movie goers should get ready to have a good laugh, shed a few tears, and experience a great deal of action and surprise. Lisa Caron, president of Alliance Française Nelson-Tasman, says to host the screenings in Nelson is “very exciting” and great timing as this year there is a big focus on attracting young people along to the films. “We are hoping schools will come along and there has been re-ally positive feedback,” says Lisa.Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

On her bikeGeneral practitioner joins husband in Wakefield

In the olden days, doctors would pedal around to visit their patients on their push bike. As a keen cyclist, Wake-field Health Centre’s newest general practitioner, Eloise Fry, loves the opportunity to do the same, albeit on a more irregular basis. The Hope resident has joined her husband Mark Fry at the Wakefield practice. It’s not the first time the cou-ple have worked together either. Mark grew up in the region while Eloise is from Whangarei. The pair met when they were studying in Dunedin and Christchurch, they also went on to work in Rotorua together. But since shifting to Nelson two years ago, Eloise says it was always in the plans that she would get the chance to work with her husband again and she is excited about the opportunities that work-ing in Wakefield will bring. “We’ve always wanted to have a practice long term.”Eloise says the area is a lot more rural, which will cre-ate more challenges. “We’re

30 minutes from the hospi-tal so you need to be able to deal with more emergencies. They get quite a few logging accidents out there so the practice is set up to deal with that.”Both Eloise and Mark have done a lot of emergency medicine work and she ad-mits the passion for it was another reason for setting her future up in Wakefield. “Because you’re further away you have to make do with what you’ve got.”She says the best part about working in medicine is the chance to get to know her pa-tients over time. “Some peo-ple go through a pretty tough time so you become quite a key part in their life during those times.”Her specialist areas are wom-en’s health and accidents. Eloise is also an elite cyclist and competes on a regular basis. She often brings her bike to work for the home check ups, much to the sur-prise of some of her patients. She is currently seeking new patients.

I was very impressed by the letter from Peter Talley, supporting amalgamation. He makes all the relevant points. Frankly I don’t know why locals have been given a choice? I think, like the local MP, that it should just go ahead. David Cliff,Richmond.

In regard to the proposed union of Nel-son and Tasman, I implore all ratepayers to concentrate on the important goal of voting for one council in the first instance before getting too caught up with specific council programmes, such as free parking or rate levels etc, whose time will come when the new council does its annual planning. The report shows we are look-ing at saving $2.65 million in management alone. This will mean our rates would be better spent on what we need, than paying for the current doubling up of costs. It has further been outlined in the official reports

there is an estimated $3.2 million saving in direct cost savings. Let’s start thinking about opportunities lost if we let this op-portunity go by.

Stuart Bean,Richmond.

In response to Peter Talley’s letter (15 Feb 2012). He certainly has a very optimistic and possibly naive view of amalgamation. First and foremost, he seems to be moti-vated by the concept that bigger is better, or more efficient. While I agree that coun-cils need to focus on gaining efficiencies, is it not necessarily the case that bigger entities are more efficient; Christchurch City Council is perhaps the most topical example that possibly needs no further ex-planation.Mr Talley mentions “personality problems amongst councillors, personal agendas and different policy objectives” as a key prob-lem between the two existing governing bodies, yet applauds the introduction of a two-tiered structure that will have adviso-ry boards, with nearly mandated personal agendas, that are able to vote on all issues whether they are relevant to them or not; and community boards that are elected to

represent only their Wards (not the entire district like councillors), who will simi-larly be entitled to vote on district-wide matters, yet they have a legal obligation to only look after their own Wards. Differ-ing agendas, objectives and personalities happens within single entitle (if I may turn to Christchurch again for an example) not just between entities. And the proposed new council structure with an increase from 35 to 42 representatives across the re-gion, does not give me the confidence that it apparently gives Mr Talley. The cost of running the enlarged number of representatives is also concerning, with the Local Government Commission pro-jecting increases of nearly $500,000 per annum for the proposed structure. Ad-ditionally, they are recommending that an amalgamated council should consider the establishment of a further six community boards, which, using LGC figures, would add a further $250,000 in governance costs alone – without including mileage, sup-port costs, staff time etc – and a further 24 elected members into the equation. And each community board is required to prepare their own ‘community plans’, so rather than reducing the number of plans, the proposal actually requires an increase

in plans, consultations, meetings and “endless talk fests”. And to feel that they are adequately rep-resenting their stakeholders, the two advi-sory boards may similarly wish to consult on and prepare plans.Planning and other processes that coun-cils follow are driven by legislation. Like Mr Talley, council is always hopeful of less process, less cost and greater simplifica-tion, but to date central government is yet to deliver this. For example, the latest audit for the Long Term Plan process which was suppos-edly to provide greater transparency has resulted in more time and consequently more cost. Based on the Draft Food Bill, currently poised to return to Parliament, it is anticipated that this will similarly be yet another piece of legislation that will result in cost to council... which of course means cost to ratepayers, unless of course a user pays model is introduced. Will combining the two authorities lead to the best of both, or the worst? Amalgama-tion is indeed an opportunity for change, but is it change in the right direction?

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: I joined a new power company because they convinced me my power bill would be lower. I waited for the first account but never got one for 3 months. Now I owe them a lot of money and they want me to pay it within 8 weeks, or disconnect my power. I can’t. What should I do?

A: First, talk to your power company about an arrangement to pay the arrears. If they are non-negotiable, and you are unable to pay before the due date, you could consider changing your power provider to avoid disconnection. Thenpay off this debt over a longer period.

Sponsored by New Zealand Lotteries

Some tips about power accounts: Ensure you put aside money from the day

you sign up. If you don’t receive an account after the

first month, phone the company, let them know your meter reading and ask for an account to be sent. Organise with the power company to have

a regular realistic payment option, so you still get the discount and no big bill surprises. WINZ may consider a special arrangement

where power payments are paid out of a client’s benefit before it is paid into their bank.

Perhaps you heard about the recent book by hospice nurse Bronnie Ware The Top Five Re-grets of the Dying. From her experience of talking with the dying she lists these regrets: 1. I wish I’d had the cour-age to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. 2. I wish I hadn’t worked so hard. 3. I wish I’d had the cour-age to express my feelings. 4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. 5. I wish that I had let myself be happier. From my own experience over more than 25 years of minister-ing to those who are dying, these regrets ring true. In fact, I find it one of the para-doxes of life that it is the dying who are able to teach us most eloquently about living! For it seems that in so many cases it is only when people are dying, and of necessity focus on what is really important, are they able to see that so many things we worry about in life are in fact not worth worrying about. To be receptive to what the dying are able to teach us and to apply it to our own lives is a great

blessing, and perhaps one not given to so many of us. Yet, there are a significant number of peo-ple who are able to put this wisdom into prac-tice. These are the people who might put their career on hold and volunteer to travel overseas

at their own expense to offer help to others. Or perhaps they might choose a different employment at less pay so they can spend more time with family and friends, or just have more time to enjoy what they find life-giving. When I encounter these people I admire them for they have been able both to ponder on what is re-ally important in life, and act on the outcome of their reflection. Chris-tians believe that Jesus came to earth to help the people of his time to do just that. Not only that, Jesus through his Spirit offers that same help to us today. Christians gather for wor-ship to praise and thank God, to be

taught by the Word of God and so learn what is really important in life, and to receive the en-couragement of God and others to be able to ap-ply this to their lives. You are very welcome to join us.

St John on the look out for more youthTwo of the bright sparks of St John Youth in the Nelson area are encouraging the community to join up and make a difference.Richmond twins Morgan and Paige Spittal, 17, joined the St John Youth programme as eight year olds and have been active members since.St John Youth is for all young people from 6 to 18 years-old, with great opportunities for those interested in leadership. The twins say it’s all about having fun and meet-ing new people, all through programmes that encourage discovery, adventure and learning. The girls say there were surprised at how much the programme has developed them in every day situations, adding that they are definitely a lot more confident.

St John Youth is currently looking for new youth leaders for its Stoke, Richmond, Mapua and Motueka youth divisions. Collectively, there are over 120 young people in-volved in both the Penguins (6-8 years-old) and Cadets (8-18 years-old) programmes in these areas.Morgan and Paige’s older sister Jamie was also a member of the St John Youth programme and is currently a youth leader in Dunedin while un-dergoing university studies.Jamie has been National Cadet of the Year, Mor-gan being Regional Cadet of the Year and Paige District Cadet of the Year. For further details about becoming a youth leader phone Tracy Simonsen on 544 5002.

He has plenty of clubs at his disposal too.

The scooterama day has been run-ning for years and gives residents a chance to have a bit of fun on their mobility scooters, as well as catching up on some road skills.Constable Glenn Lloyd-Jones will be running the residents through some safety tips, obstacle courses, relays, rallys and much more. The day gets everyone at Oakwoods involved.

Snowden’s Bush ReserveIf you’ve visited Snowden’s Bush Reserve recently, you will see that it has been a hive of activity. Janice Gibb and her team from Forest and Bird have been actively spraying within the Reserve and have been busy with more plant-ings. Ten rattraps and two stoat traps have been operating success-fully, with many rats and mice al-ready caught. DOC have provided bark, which will be used to mulch the planted out garden areas, and also on their most recent project; the protection of the large Totara trees within the Reserve. If you are a regular user of the park you will have noticed the vehicles driving around the tota-ra have impacted on their roots, which are very exposed above ground. This is damaging them and there is a great need to ensure their sustained growth for the fu-ture. The current wood post and rail barriers are to be extended to the outside of the root area for pro-tection, and bark will be placed on top. A number of new Totara trees and other natives are being planted in the open space area of the park.Visitors are encouraged to use and enjoy the area, but if you bring a picnic, please ensure you take all your rubbish home with you, or use the bins provided.

The Brightwater Summer Flower Show This was held on February 4th and 5th at the Brightwater Hall. The good weather made a great differ-ence to the number of the public coming to see the flowers. Sunday especially was quite crowded in the morning. We had nearly 400 entries ranging from Gladiolas, Dahlias, Roses, Cut flowers of every description, fruit and vegetables, container plants and a display by the Waimea Floral Art group. The Mattsen boys entered into the school classes producing some very imaginative vegetable livestock. Who would have thought of a cat-erpillar created from a cucumber with grapes for legs? Some pupils from Brightwater School grew sun-flowers in pots.Joan Heaphy won the 1st day spike champion with Sancere gladi-olus and Lorna Kerr the second day spike champion with Waimea Raewyn. Arch Crerar, our presi-dent, won the champion dahlia. Jeanette Mattsen won the premier rose with Elina a beautiful white rose. Raffle recipients were Lorna Kerr and Mrs Robinson. If anyone would like to join our so-ciety please contact Lorna 542 3737 or Pamela Sirett 542 3414

Welcome to our February Newsletter,Hello to each and every one of you. Hope you all had happy holidays, and are well, relaxed and back to work and school. We recently held our first Community As-sociation meeting and it was great to see so many familiar faces again. We would love to see some new faces coming along.

You will all have heard by now that the Local Government Commission has set a timeline in place for an amalgamation of Tasman District and Nelson councils, this means we will all be sent voting papers late in March and we all need to have our say. As soon as you get your papers please fill them in and get them posted. We en-

courage everyone to have his or her say. If 50 percent of the people who vote say yes, then the amalga-

mation will go ahead. The Mural is almost complete, all we need to do is to put the anti graffiti paint on, this is in hand. Also in hand is the completion of the BMX Track. See the notice elsewhere in “On the Brightside.”We want to remake the garden at the Vil-lage Green – do you have any ideas? One suggestion we have is to make a shape of a water wheel with hedging and to put lots

of colours in between. Please let us know if you have any ideas. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 6 March, and will be held in the Brightwater School Hall. Folks from Tasman District Coun-cil, including the Mayor, will be there to discuss the 10 Year Strategic Plan. Come along and listen to what they have to say and bring some questions with you. See you there.Brightwater Community Association.

PUBLIC MEETING TUESDAY 6 MARCH, 7.30pm BRIGHTWATER SCHOOL HALL

Brightwater PlaycentreWe are back and ready for another busy and exciting year! The Playcentre grounds are looking better than ever thanks to community help we received with the new bark and sand, and the tremendous effort from parents over the holidays. Thank you to all those involved. This term at Brightwater Playcentre we are focusing on literacy opportunities that are meaningful to the children. Building and maintaining friendships is also an area we are working on. We recently began our vegetable planting. Thank you to Place for Plantsfor the donation of some seedlings. The children have enjoyed planting and maintaining the garden and we are all talking about healthy eating as a result. We have limited spaces available. You are welcome to come and visit, and are entitled to three free vis-its. Please phone on 03 542 3270 if you would like more information.

Brightwater BMX Track Completion Plan Proton Dirtpark (as the new track will be named) has had most of the major construc-tion works completed. The course is defined and drainage issues have

been addressed as best as could be on the budget. The riding surface is not as good as we would have hoped, but the cost of importing, spreading and compacting fine grade clay is prohibi-tive. The track will though, give many years of fun and enjoyment (and mi-nor injuries). Final dressing of the track is now required along with land-scaping and the implementation of a long-term maintenance plan. We plan to have a grand opening soon so watch this space, Rua.

Brightwater Playcentre children, Nate Wilbourne, Emma Stuart, Laylah Nicholson, Maddie Taylor, Danni Clements, Kaylee Robertson, and as-sistant Verdun King enjoy watering their vegetable plantings.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby Club 2012

With the women and third division sides show-ing their potential last year, Waimea Old Boys are looking at bringing in more silverware for the coming season.Last season Waimea won the senior division three championship and the women’s competi-tion.But the biggest title, the division one competi-tion, is still on the radar for Waimea, having come within a whisker of defeating eventual winners Marist, in the semi final last year.Last year featured an influx of new stars in the backline, but with one season under their belt

already, brighter and bigger things can be ex-pected.Up front there should be a host of familiar faces including Crusaders wider training squad mem-ber Sam Prattley. The forwards will be coached again by Rik Taikato. The backs will again be run by Waimea legends Dion Mytton and Mark Milne. The side could be without halfback Kaide Whiting for the com-ing season, though, as he is currently playing in Scotland. But they still have plenty of attacking prowess to call upon in the backline. James Lowe will be looking to fire on all cylinders as he chases a spot with the Tasman Makos. James will be one of the players to watch this season whether it is in the 13 jumper or at back. He had attracted interest from New Zealand sevens guru Gordon Ti-etjens prior to the season, before mak-ing himself unavailable for the short-ened form of the game due to New Zealand Under-20 commitments.Pre-season training is being held eve-ry Monday night from 6:30pm at Ju-bilee Park and players wishing to join for the coming season are more than welcome to visit training. The first match of the season will be on March 31.The club’s division two team begins

its season on April 7 and is out to get back the trophy it last won in 2009. Waimea had won the competition for the previous three years before sur-rendering the title.Nick Marquet will be taking the reins as head coach with Patrick Pye again filling the role as assistants. If any players are keen to play division 2 senior rugby please call Nick Mar-quet on 027 333 8066.Now to the champions. The women’s team is back to defend its crown after beating rivals Stoke in last years in-credibly tight final. fosters teamwork and success – a testament to the number of titles it has won over the years. JAB is where the future stars are born and many of the junior players come back to play for WOB as seniors in the years to come. James Lowe was one example of this hap-pening. Depsite going to Broadgreen In-termediate School and Nelson College, he was proud to come back to Jubilee Park to pull on the Waimea Old Boys jumper as an adult. This year Waimea JAB is hosting two regis-tration nights and they are not to be missed if your child is interested in playing rugby for the 2012 winter season.Registration nights will be held on Thurs-day March 1 and Tuesday March 6 at the clubrooms, from 6 to 8pm, on Saturday March 3 from 10am-12noon at the Rich-mond Mall.If you are new the region or to the club then a registration form can be found on the club’s website www.wobrfc.co.nz. Waimea Old Boys president Duane Whiting is ex-pecting a huge effort and matching results from all teams under the club’s proud red and white hooped banner this season. These days, rugby clubs can’t run without sponsor-ship and Duane is grateful to the businesses that have got behind, and are committed to, the club for 2012. “A big, big thank you to all of our sponsors. We can’t operate without you and we want to give you maximum exposure and suitable results for your dollars,” he says.

Duane wishes all the players, coaches, manage-ment and supporters from the division one side right down to under-6 teams a very happy, safe and rewarding season. “Play hard, play fair and fill our trophy cabinet with the many symbols of Nelson Bays’ rugby supremacy.”

Message from the President

Girls can too – Waimea Old Boys JAB player Anya Schultz runs up the field for the un-der 10’s in a match against Stoke. Waimea’s junior wing is one of the biggest JAB clubs in Nel-son with teams from under 6 through to under 13. Always someone you know

Richards remembered at KartSport memorialV8 supercar legend Jason Richards was remembered with a minutes silence and a memorial photo at the season’s first meeting at Classic Hits Kartsport Nelson Raceway, on Sunday.Jason’s motorsport career started off humbly when he was just 8 years-old in Nelson, taking to the KartSport track with ease. When he moved from karting after 8 years in the sport he had accumulated 35 championship titles. He would become a regular visitor and

driver to the Nelson track, despite his fame in Australia’s biggest motorsport series.Jason’s career highlights include finish-ing second and third in V8 Supercar’s most famous race, the Bathurst 1000. He died at the age of 35 in December, just over a year after being diagnosed with cancer. The first KartSport race of the New Year featured a strong turnout, with many of the region’s current kart drivers there to pay their respects to the local icon.A star with Jason’s “JR” logo was placed on two of the karts.

There were light winds and high hu-midity making it a very hot day for all the drivers once racing got underway at midday.Final Winners from each class on the day were as follows. Open: 88 Andy Stratford, Rotax Max Heavy: 14 Dun-can Barrett, Rotax Max Light: 68 Bren-don Gridley, Junior Yamaha: 69 Clarke Mcfadzien, Junior Restricted: 11 Lewis Ball, Cadet: Josh Bradley. This weekend will feature the club’s Have a Go Day, anyone interested in having a go should contact Kartsport Nelson at [email protected]

Rupert Wockner made some precious inroads as Garin College proudly performed against Nelson College during day one of the Gillette Cup.The heavily favoured Nelson College first XI were all out for just 160 runs at Ngawhatu, before capi-talising with the ball in return. Garin did not sur-pass 50 runs with the bat.Waimea College were defeated in the final over to Marlborough Boys’ College. Garin and Waimea squared off yesterday.

On the hunt for a missing trophy

Waimea revival seals qualificationWaimea College will look back on their win over Nayland College with much delight. It was that come from behind victory which booked their place in the zone 5 regional touch finals in Christchurch next month.Waimea College had taken the lead against Nay-land at the Tasman Secondary School Touch Championship at the Tahunanui Playing Fields on Sunday before finding themselves two tries down after half time, before a late revival ended the re-sult at 6-4 in favour of Waimea.Waimea then went on to face Motueka High School, who had surprisingly been turned over by Nayland in the previous round, in a decider for the final. A Waimea victory would have put Mot out of the running for the next round in Christchurch, despite holding the favourites tag going into the local event. But Motueka made plenty of inroads late in the piece, despite the best efforts of standout Sean Cle-mentson, and took the fixture 5-4.The final two spots were then decided on point differential after all teams had also dispatched Queen Charlotte High School, Waimea getting up 5-1 in that match. But fatigue set in as the final encounter drew on and Waimea were no match against Motueka, this time going down 5-2.Waimea and Motueka will go to Christchurch for the next round late next month.

Competent and compassionate care, always

Hospice Inpatient Unit40 Manuka St, Nelsonwww.nelsonhospice.org.nz

Nelson Hospice provides a range of holistic services and programmes to meet the physical, psychological, spiritual and cultural needs of terminally ill patients and their families. As an organisation, it believes that all people in the Nelson Tasman community should have access to high quality compassionate palliative care, without prejudice. Its services are available to anyone on their final journey - including babies, children and young adults - and extend beyond the actual Hospice itself. Services are provided 24 hours a day, seven-days-a-week, throughout the region, including the Rai Valley and Murchison, either at the hospice or in the patient’s own home. Hospice staff assist patients to make the most of the life that remains and make sure that their final journey is as positive and as comfortable as it can possibly be. They are also there to provide support and care for family and close friends during the patient’s illness and in bereavement. The Hospice team is headed by an oncologist and

includes a dedicated clinical team who deliver competent and compassionate care. Their work is supported by a chaplain, counsellor, social worker, administration, volunteer and bereavement support co-ordinators, a five member Board of Trustees, CEO and more than 300 volunteers. The generosity of the Nelson public is key to the functioning of the Hospice. It can only provide its services thanks to donations from individuals, businesses and organisations, and a large and dedicated network of volunteers who support patients and clinical staff, organise fundraising events, help in the Hospice’s charity stores, and act as ambassadors to raise the organisation’s profile. Nelson Hospice’s vision is to “care always” and with the continued support and generosity of the Nelson community,it will.

When the Nelson South four a-side women’s freestyle relay won the Ton Boulton Cup at last fortnight’s Nelson Marlborough Swimming Championship there was something missing – the trophy. The Ton Boulton Cup was lost in 2007 and rep-resentatives from Nelson’s swimming clubs are on the hunt to find it.The trophy was first presented in 1984. It is named after Ton Boulton, who is a life member to Swimming New Zealand. It is believed to have Ton Boulton engraved on it. Phone Margaret Young on 5447752 if you have any further information.

Nelson South swimming club life member Margaret Young is on the look out for a miss-ing cup similar to the one above.

Hockey duo off to WellingtonTwo of the region’s top hockey players are head-ing back to the capital for another crack at na-tional glory.Jared Jones and Scott Kearney, both of Tasman hockey club, have successfully trialled for the Capital Under-21 team ahead of the national Under-21 tournament in Hamilton on May 7-12, and hope to gain selected in the senior men’s side ahead of the National Hockey League soon after. The Under-21 competition features teams from the top eight regions in the country. Jared, a former Waimea College student, is con-fident Capital can go all the way. “Since I’ve been in it we’ve had a third place, two wins and a fifth so hopefully in my last year we can win again,” he says.Once the tournament is over, they will stay in Wellington and trial for the senior side.Jared says the hockey in Wellington is on a com-plete different level. “Hockey in Nelson is a bit casual. When you’re up in Wellington you have

6:30am trainings. You’re playing with guys you will pass where you want it to go or trap it where you want it to be.”A new high performance centre has also been built in Wellington. Both Jared and Scott have played for Southern in the National Hockey League before Jared spent a year with Capital last year.Scott, a former Nelson College first XI defender, didn’t play for Capital last year because he was coaching and playing in Marlborough, England. He enjoyed the experience of coaching in a pri-vate boarding school where hockey was one of the top sports, but says the time away made him miss out on further New Zealand selection.Jared, who plays up front in a striker role, went on a tour of Malaysia with the Junior Black Sticks last year. Scott and Jared both have goals of being select-ed for the New Zealand Under-21 side. “Even though we’re both sort of there now, we really need to break in further.”Jared moved to Wellington on Monday and Scott will follow later this week.

ATHLETICS: Athletics Nelson has taken out the Mahar Cup, with Tapawera’s Chris Brake collecting the award for athlete of the meet. His 1.96m personal best in the high jump was his standout effort along with a vic-

tory in triple jump and the mens 16 100m. Waimea College long jumper Brendon Bar-nett landed an impressive 7.20m jump to win the senior mens long jump.

SWIMMING: Sam McKenzie, of the Nelson Swimming Club, won the gold medal in the 50m freestyle for 12-year-old boys at the jun-ior national swimming meet in Wellington at the weekend. Sam’s time of 28.33 seconds beat his personal best by 1.26sec and set a Nelson-Marlborough record for 12-year-olds. Sam also placed seventh in the 100m freestyle, taking 2.8sec off his previous best in that event.

New Zealand Rugby League legend Ruben Wiki brought a special guest along to the Community Roots Carnival at Auckland Point School on Sun-day, a close friend Ruben likes to call T. Rophy. The Rugby League World Cup was on show at the free League community event for children aged 5 to 12 years. But unlike the plane ride home af-ter winning the Cup in Australia in 2008, Ruben didn’t book T. Rophy a seat on their flight to Nel-son.The most-capped Rugby League international of all time says he is impressed with the resurgence and growth of the code in the Nelson-Tasman re-gion. “It’s good coming down to Nelson because I was talking to one of the parents who said back in

the 80’s League was strong down here and its get-ting stronger again so it’s good to see all the kids down here to continue the cycle.”He credits the growth around New Zealand and especially provincial centres to success on the in-ternational stage. “It’s just the belief mate, belief that we can match it with the big boys and we got the silverware which we still hold dearly,” says Ruben.Switching roles from trainer to defence coach for the Warriors is another jump in the coaching ranks for the NRL Premiership winner but he still finds time for the grassroots and genuinely enjoys the Roots Camp. “I love passing on the knowledge to these little ones and seeing them have fun. It’s what it’s about,” he says.

Pursuant to powers provided to the Harbourmaster by the Tasman District Council Navigation Safety Bylaw 2005 (Amended 2006), the speed limits imposed by the Bylaw in relation to vessels within 50 metres of another vessel, or within 200 metres of shore or a structure are suspended for those vessels taking part and controlling the event.
