Introduction

This collection contains easy and challenging pieces for novice playersand enyoyable sightreeding material fpr more advanced players.

The pieces are individually rather short but are ordered so that they fallinto longer groups, or medleys. Two of the pieces are ballad tunes, one isprovided with the text and tune in lute-song style (Brande Soet Oliver - thetext is sung by Touchstone in As you like it, Act III, Scene iii, by WilliamShakespeare), and another, Go from my window, can also be sung with asyou play. The following text from Merrythought´s song in Beaumont´s playThe Knight of the Burning Pestle, Act III, scene v, fits very nicely:

Go from my window, love, go:go from my window, my dear. The wind and the rainwill drive you back again;you cannot be lodged here.

The purpose of this edition is to provide enyoable pieces at a technicaleasy level. It is a purely practical edition, and for this reason musicologicaldetails are not included. Obvious mistakes and occasionally missing measuresin the original have simply been corrected and restored without notes andannotations. In one or two pieces the right-hand fingering may seem peculiar, but it is clear in the original that this was intended.
