Natal 2019

~ Christus Natus Est ~

“Glória a Deus nas Alturas e Paz na terra”

Queridos Irmãos e Irmãs em Cristo, Cristo nasceu! Há mais de dois mil anos na aldeia de Beit Sahour, perto de Belém, um anjo apareceu a um grupo

de homens e mulheres que estavam vigiando as ovelhas. Eram ignorados pela sociedade por criar animais embora que

fossem usados nos sacrifícios do Templo. Imagine a alegria de ouvir as notícias que Aquele que lhes salvaria, EMANUEL,

nasceu na cidade de David. O Cristo estava perto não só de onde estavam fisicamente mas também dos seus corações. O

sinal do que era verdade foi que achariam uma criança envolta de panos numa manjedoura, onde comem os animais. Os

pastores, esperando a libertação da opressão, correram para a manjedoura. Estes foram os primeiros a receber a mensagem

do nascimento do Salvador, antes de qualquer rei ou Mago chegasse para ver o Salvador, o Rei recentemente nascido. Estes

homens, mulheres e crianças dos campos tiveram a primeira experiência do Cristo, o Cordeiro de Deus que tira os pecados

do mundo.

Jesus nasceu em história para nos ensinar como melhor ser filhos e filhas de Deus, irmãos e irmãs numa família de

Deus. Ele vem nos mostrar a misericórdia do Pai, tornando se mesmo a porta da Misericórdia pela qual entramos na

salvação. O sinal que nós recebemos é o mesmo que os pastores receberam, uma criança deitada numa manjedoura, o Deus

de Amor Misericordioso. “Tanto amou Deus o mundo, que lhe entregou seu Filho Unigénito, a fim de que tudo o que nele

crê não se perca, mas tenha a vida eterna.” (João 3: 16-17)

Nesta altura do ano, todos nós recebemos pedidos de assistência financeira. Quanto possível é o nosso dever, a

nossa salvação de ajudar o mais que pudermos especialmente durante esta quadra natalícia. Na vossa generosidade peço-

vos que não se esqueçam dos sacerdotes reformados da Arquidiocese de Boston nas Missas de Natal. Em todas as

Missas haverá uma só colecta para este fim. Peço também que não se esqueçam das necessidades da paróquia e de usarem o

envelope incluído e para fazer uma generosa oferta para assim aliviar as despesas da nossa Paróquia. É aqui na Igreja que

nos juntamos para celebrar numa maneira especial o Amor de Deus para conosco. As ofertas feitas nas Missas do dia de

Natal são totalmente entregues à Arquidiocese para ajudar aos sacerdotes reformados. Como temos feito estes últimos anos

o dinheiro do beijar o Menino Jesus será enviada para uma caridade que dê ajuda a crianças.

Neste tempo em que damos ofertas uns aos outros, num verdadeiro sentido de caridade Cristã, rezemos pelo nosso

próximo pedindo que a Alegria e a Paz daquele primeiro Natal encha os seus corações. Pedimos que a Paz e as Bênçãos do

nosso Deus de Amor estejam abundantemente convosco neste Natal e ao longo do Ano Novo.

Easter Sunday (Cycle B) The tomb was empty. In the early morning darkness of that first Easter, there was only confusion for Mary Magdalene and the other disciples. But as the daylight spread, they saw the dawning of a new crea-tion. At first they didn't understand the Scripture, to-day's Gospel tells us. We don't know which precise Scripture texts they were supposed to understand. Perhaps it was the sign of Jonah, who rose from the belly of the great fish after three days (see Jonah 1:17). Or maybe Hosea's prophecy of Israel's restora-tion from exile (see Hosea 6:2). Perhaps it was the psalmist who rejoiced that God had not abandoned him to the nether world (see Psalm 16:9-10). Whichever Scripture it was, as the disciples bent down into the tomb, they saw and they believed. What did they see? Burial shrouds in an empty tomb. The stone removed from the tomb. Seven times in nine verses we hear that word - "tomb." What did they believe? That God had done what Jesus said He would do - raised Him up on the third day (see Mark 9:31; 10:34). What they saw and believed, they bore witness to, as today's First Reading tells us. Peter's speech is a summary of the gospels - from Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to His hanging on a tree (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23), to His rising from the dead. We are children of the apostles, born into the new world of their witness. Our lives are now "hidden with Christ in God," as today's Epistle says. Like them, we gather in the morning on the first day of the week - to celebrate the Eucharist, the feast of the empty tomb. We rejoice that the stones have been rolled away from our tombs, too. Each of us can shout, as we do in today's Psalm: "I shall not die, but live." They saw and believed. And we await the day they promised would come - when we, too, "will ap-pear with Him in glory."

Terceira Semana do Advento (Ano C) O tema deste 3º Domingo pode girar à volta da pergunta: “e nós, que devemos fazer?” Preparar o “caminho” por onde o Senhor vem sig-nifica questionar os nossos limites, o nosso egoísmo e comodismo e operar uma verdadeira transformação da nossa vida no sentido de Deus. O Evangelho sugere três aspectos onde essa trans-formação é necessária: é preciso sair do nosso egoís-mo e aprender a partilhar; é preciso quebrar os es-quemas de exploração e de imoralidade e proceder com justiça; é preciso renunciar à violência e à pre-potência e respeitar absolutamente a dignidade dos nossos irmãos. O Evangelho avisa-nos, ainda, que o cristão é “baptizado no Espírito”, recebe de Deus vida nova e tem de viver de acordo com essa dinâmica. A primeira leitura sugere que, no início, no meio e no fim desse “caminho de conversão”, espera-nos o Deus que nos ama. O seu amor não só perdoa as nossas faltas, mas provoca a conversão, transforma-nos e renova-nos. Daí o convite à alegria: Deus está no meio de nós, ama-nos e, apesar de tudo, insiste em fazer caminho connosco. A segunda leitura insiste nas atitudes correctas que devem marcar a vida de todos os que querem acolher o Senhor: alegria, bondade, oração.

Third Sunday of Advent (Cycle C) The people in today's Gospel are "filled with expec-tation." They believe John the Baptist might be the Messiah they've been waiting for. Three times we hear their question: "What then should we do?" The Messiah's coming requires every man and wom-an to choose - to "repent" or not. That's John's mes-sage and it will be Jesus' too (see Luke 3:3; 5:32; 24:47). "Repentance" translates a Greek word, metanoia (literally, "change of mind"). In the Scriptures, re-pentance is presented as a two-fold "turning" - away from sin (see Ezekiel 3:19; 18:30) and toward God (see Sirach 17:20-21; Hosea 6:1). This "turning" is more than attitude adjustment. It means a radical life-change. It requires "good fruits as evidence of your repentance" (see Luke 3:8). That's why John tells the crowds, soldiers and tax collectors they must prove their faith through works of charity, honesty and social justice. In today's Liturgy, each of us is being called to stand in that crowd and hear the "good news" of John's call to repentance. We should examine our lives, ask from our hearts as they did: "What should we do?" Our repentance should spring, not from our fear of coming wrath (see Luke 3:7-9), but from a joyful sense of the nearness of our saving God. This theme resounds through today's readings: "Rejoice!...The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all," we hear in today's Epistle. In today's Responsorial, we hear again the call to be joyful, unafraid at the Lord's coming among us. In today's First Reading, we hear echoes of the an-gel's Annunciation to Mary. The prophet's words are very close to the angel's greeting (compare Luke 1:28-31). Mary is the Daughter Zion - the favored one of God, told not to fear but to rejoice that the Lord is with her, "a mighty Savior." She is the cause of our joy. For in her draws near the Messiah, as John had promised: "One mightier than I is coming."

Christmas 2019 ~ Christus Natus Est ~

“Glory to God in the highest and on earth Peace”

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

In the midst of darkening skies the Light is come! Over two thousand years ago in the village of Beit Sahour,

not far from Bethlehem, an angel appeared to a group of lowly men and women who were tending sheep. These were peo-

ple who would have been looked down upon because of their menial task of raising the animals that would be used in the

Temple sacrifices. Imagine their joy at the news that the One who would save them, EMMANUEL, had been born in the

city of David, very close to where they were. The sign that this was true was that they would find an infant wrapped in

swaddling cloths lying in a manger, a container used for feeding animals. The shepherds, hoping for liberation from the

oppression of their burdened life, went running to the manger. These were the first to receive the message of the birth of

the Savior, before any kings or wise men would arrive and see the Savior these men, women and children of the fields were

the first to see the Christ, the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world.

Jesus was born in history so that he might teach us how better to be children of God, brothers and sisters in the one

family of God. He comes to show us the Father’s mercy, becoming himself the door of Mercy through which we enter into

salvation. The sign is the same as that received by the shepherds, a child in a manger, the God of Merciful Love. “For God

so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God

did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:16-17)

At this time of year we all receive many requests for financial assistance. As much as possible it is our duty and our

salvation to do what we can. In your generosity, we ask that you not forget the retired priests of the Archdiocese in

the Christmas collection. Also, please use the enclosed envelope at your discretion to help alleviate the expenses of the

Parish. It is here in the church that we gather to celebrate in a very special way God’s love for us. Our Offertory at the

Christmas Masses is given entirely to care for the retired priests of the Archdiocese. As has been done in the past few years,

the money from the Kissing of the Baby Jesus will be sent to a charity that provides for the needs of children.

As we pray for each other in a true sense of gift giving and Christian charity may you, and those you love, know the

JOY and PEACE of that first Christmas, which Joseph and Mary and the shepherds in the fields experienced. We pray that

the Peace & Blessings of our loving God may be yours abundantly at Christmas and in the coming year.

Peter's speech is a summary of the gospels - from Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to His hanging on a tree (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23), to His rising from the dead. We are children of the apostles, born into the new world of their witness. Our lives are now "hidden with Christ in God," as today's Epistle says. Like them, we gather in the morning on the first day of the week - to celebrate the Eucharist, the feast of the empty tomb. We rejoice that the stones have been rolled away from our tombs, too. Each of us can shout, as we do in today's Psalm: "I shall not die, but live." They saw and believed. And we await the day they promised would come - when we, too, "will ap-pear with Him in glory."

Quarto Domingo do Advento

A liturgia deste domingo diz-nos, fundamental-mente, que Jesus é o “Deus-connosco”, que veio ao encontro dos homens para lhes oferecer uma proposta de salvação e de vida nova. Na primeira leitura, o profeta Isaías anuncia que Jahwéh é o Deus que não abandona o seu Povo e que quer percorrer, de mãos dadas com ele, o caminho da história… É n’Ele (e não nas sempre falíveis seguranças humanas) que devemos colocar a nossa esperan-ça. O Evangelho apresenta Jesus como a incarnação viva desse “Deus connosco”, que vem ao encon-tro dos homens para lhes apresentar uma proposta de salvação. Contém, naturalmente, um convite implícito a acolher de braços abertos a proposta que Ele traz e a deixar-se transformar por ela. Na segunda leitura, sugere-se que, do encontro com Jesus, deve resultar o testemunho: tendo recebido a Boa Nova da salvação, os seguidores de Jesus devem levá-la a todos os homens e fazer com que ela se torne uma realidade libertadora em todos os tempos e lugares. .

Fourth Sunday of Advent (Cycle A) The mystery kept secret for long ages, promised through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, is today revealed (see Romans 16:25-26). This is the "Gospel of God" that Paul celebrates in today's Epistle - the good news that "God is with us" in Jesus Christ. The sign promised to the House of David in today's First Reading is given in today's Gospel. In the virgin found with child, God himself has brought to Israel a savior from David's royal line (see Acts 13:22-23). Son of David according to the flesh, Jesus is the Son of God, born of the Spirit. He will be anointed with the Spirit (see Acts 10:38), and by the power of Spir-it will be raised from the dead and established at God's right hand in the heavens (see Acts 2:33-34; Ephesians 1:20-21). He is the "King of Glory" we sing of in today's Psalm. The earth in its fullness has been given to Him. And as God swore long ago to David, His Kingdom will have no end (see Psalm 89:4-5). In Jesus Christ we have a new creation. Like the cre-ation of the world, it is a work of the Spirit, a bless-ing from the Lord (see Genesis 1:2). In Him, we are saved from our sins, are called now "the beloved of God." All nations now are called to belong to Jesus Christ, to enter into the House of David and Kingdom of God, the Church. Together, through the obedience of faith, we have been made a new race - a royal people that seeks for the face of the God of Jacob. He has made our hearts clean, made us worthy to en-ter His holy place, to stand in His presence and serve Him. In the Eucharist, the everlasting covenant is renewed, the Advent promise of virgin with child - God with us - continues until the end of the age (see Matthew 28:20; Ezekiel 37:24-28

Message from the Archdiocese concerning Disciples in Mission:

Out of pastoral concern for Fr. Walter’s needed back surgery, future knee replacements, and the time

he will need for recuperation, St. Anthony’s and St. Francis will not be part of the Disciples in Mis-

sion initiative this year as previously planned. Fr. Walter will be unable to do the preparation work

that is necessary for moving into a Collaborative and so the Archdiocese has decided that it is best to

postpone this move for a year. Please keep Fr. Walter in your prayers during this time of illness.

Poderá acontecer na Igreja depois da missa ou em outro lugar onde o doente fisicamente se en-

contra. Encorajamos as pessoas responsáveis pelos doentes a não esperar até ao último momento para contactar o Sac-erdote. O ultimo sacramento deve ser o Viaticum, ou Co-munhão pelos moribundos.

Anointing of the Sick The church encourages & invites all who are ill, who are to undergo surgery, or who are confined to their home due to illness to be prayed over & anointed with sacred oil. This can take place after Mass, at home or at the hospital. Please

do not wait for the last moment for yourself or a loved one to be anointed. The last sacrament is Viaticum or commun-ion for the dying. Please speak to a priest for anointing.
