UNSD Energy StatisticsQuestionnaire: Oil and oil products

Ilaria DiMatteoChief, Energy Statistics Section

United Nations Statistics Division

ESCWA EGM on Compilation and Analysis of Energy Statistics and Indicators 3-5 March 2009, Beirut

UNSD data collection

• Annual energy data:• UN Annual Energy Statistics Questionnaire:

sent out by November of Year, covering (Year – 1) and revisions on (Year – 6) to (Year – 2)

• Monthly energy data:• MBS questionnaire• JODI questionnaire

UNSD dissemination

• Annually:• Energy Statistics Yearbook • Energy Balances and Electricity Profiles• UN Energy Statistics DB• UNdata (http://data.un.org)

• Monthly:• Monthly Bulletin of Statistics (MBS - data on

various fields, including energy)• World JODI database

Energy Statistics YearbookEnergy Statistics Yearbook - comprehensive collection of international energy statistics, providing a global framework of comparable data on the supply of mainly commercial primary and secondary forms of energy

Energy Balances and Electricity ProfilesEnergy Balances - snapshots of the annual energy flows

in each country showing energy production, trade, conversion and consumption of fuels

Electricity Profiles - provide detailed information on the production, trade and consumption of electricity, net installed capacity and thermal power plant input and efficiency

Coverage of oil and oil products

Crude Oil Oil products from refineries (some occasionally from plants):

• Liquefied Pet. Gas (LPG)• Motor gasoline• Jet Fuel• Kerosene• Gas/diesel oil• Residual Fuel Oil• Aviation gasolene• Naphtha• Refinery gas• Feedstocks

• Bitumen asphalt• White spirit• Petroleum waxes• Lubricants• Petroleum coke• Other petroleum products

From plants only:• Plant condensate• Natural gasoline• Natural gas liquids n.e.s.

Production of Crude oil

• Quantities of fuels extracted or produced, calculated after any operation for removal of inert matter

• Generally, production includes the quantities consumed by the producer in the production process (such as for heating or operation of equipment) as well as supplies to other producers of energy for transformation or other uses

Production of oil products (e.g. jet fuel, motor gasoline, diesel, residual fuel oil, LPG) is classified by the source: from refineries or from natural gas processing plants.

Products from plants are called natural gas liquids (NGLs), and when no detail is available they can be reported generically as NGL not elsewhere specified

Production of oil products

Transformation/conversionto other forms of energy

When the energy content of the commodity is being transferred to another commodity• Conversion in coke ovens• Conversion in gasworks• Conversion in briquetting plants• Conversion in blast furnaces• Conversion in refineries• Conversion in natural gas processing plants• Conversion in thermal power plants• Conversion in other energy-producing plants

Total crude oil/feedstocks/NGLs entering processing units at refineries.

Transformation/conversion in refineries

Consumption by energy sectorWhen the energy content of the commodity is being burned to feed the process

of producing another commodity:• Consumption by mining industry (energy commodities) • Consumption by crude petroleum and Natural Gas fields • Consumption by natural gas fields and plants• Consumption by biogas plants• Consumption by coke ovens• Consumption by gasworks• Consumption by briquetting plants• Consumption by blast furnaces• Consumption by petroleum refineries• Consumption by pump-storage plants• Consumption by thermal power plants & auxiliaries • Consumption by other energy producers• Consumption by pure heating plants

Final ConsumptionConsumption for non-energy usesConsumption by industry & construction

• Consumption by iron and steel industry• Consumption by chemical industry• Consumption by other industries and construction

Consumption by transportation industry• Consumption by Road• Consumption by Rail• Consumption by Air• Consumption by Inland and coastal waterways • Consumption by other transportation

Consumption by households and other consumers• Consumption by Households• Consumption by Agriculture• Consumption by Public lighting• Consumption by other consumers
