Objectives•Students will be able to explain the importance of the 21st Century Skills.•Students will be able to apply the 21st Century skills in different situations.
Effective Communication SkillsCommunication is a reciprocal of a man which may be face to face or
thru different media. It is the sharing of information, thoughts,
feelings or emotions, a process on encoding and decoding ideas and
concepts. One such powerful medium is the computer and its
application.
* Teachers can enhance the research skills of students by guiding them to surf the Internet. * She should teach them to evaluate and choose a URL or web site which is credible and authentic.* It should be informative, factual posed by known organization, institution or authors, no bias and with related links. * It must be updated.
* The teacher must also help the students to process the information they obtain from the internet.* Cutting and pasting the information must the totally discouraged. * Students must read and choose the information which is appropriate for their own purposes. * If they copied a line or several line, they should acknowledge the source. * Students must be intellectually honest.
Critical Thinking SkillsThis involves the higher order thinking
skills like analysis, synthesis, evaluation (Bloom’s Taxonomy). Activities or question must be planned so as to
enable the students to transcend from low level thinking to advance level. It is only when students develop a critical
mind that he/ she can become creative and dynamic in solving day to day problems and in coming out with innovations to promote progress.
Students can become inventive or innovative. This is where
pedagogical practices can come in like, the art of questioning,
assessment procedures, appropriate methods and strategies. Teachers should ask more of the questions that begin with how and why so
that’s the students to develop their arguments.
Assessment should be done before, during and after by both students and the teacher so that reflection
can be made, and monitoring as to the direction of the students can
best be determine for proper redirection. The method and the
strategy which are student-centered should be best used to promote challenging activities.
High Productivity SkillsThru technology, teacher and student can
accomplish more targets because it facilitates the execution of the different
learning process such as providing information, explanation of concepts,
illustrating of principles, giving examples, outlining procedures, demonstrating
processes, advancing arguments, highlighting points, asking questions,
giving feedbacks, exchanging ideas, and performing task. (Visions and Guiding
Principles; UNESCO-APEID, 2005)
This is in relation to the projects teacher ask students to work on. These are concrete and tangible
signs of knowledge, skills and attitude develop in the learner or
students. Using technology, one can work faster and more accurately, and
can design projects.
Societal Values SkillsThis involves the development of favorable relationship and concern for the welfare of others. Teaching and learning must not be
only technology-driven, it must still be based on the needs and problems of the learners during a specific stage of their
development. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) are tools to facilitate the developments of values-
oriented students and learners.
As teacher use technology for teaching, she must also be aware of
social issues including the recognition and understanding of legal and moral codes like copyright and intellectual
property rights, the promotion of healthy attitude towards the use of
technology and the proper monitoring of internet use by the students to
safeguard the development of negative if not, scandalous behavior.
It must be necessary for the teachers to build a
partnership with parents so that, they can monitor the use of technology of their children as they can be vulnerable in visiting sites which are not
suited for their ages.
Teacher Education Institutions in the global context have launched
programs for the integration of technology in education. Curricular offerings were revised and or enrich to accommodate this new initiative for the pre-service education. It is
observed that putting up of computer laboratories and the retooling of teachers have become the first
priorities of administration.
The faculty must be equipped with the appropriate skills to create a technology-enable learning environment and to develop the 21st century skills
among the students. To foster this relevant development among the students, a discussion on selected
pedagogical practices are presented alongside technology.
