• Owns over 200 acres; core of campus is between 60 and 65 acres.

• 270 students, 100 adults live on campus.

• 65 total faculty.

• 20 buildings on campus (covered by WLAN).

• 4 new buildings by end of 2009.

• 68 total Access Points (APs) across campus.

• All units are Power over Ethernet (PoE).

• Redundant controllers in place.

• We actively seek out and prevent rogue APs.

• We monitor student usage but do not (and really cannot) prevent against broadband-card access to the Web.

• First networked campus in 1994.

• At the time, we held off on wireless…• Even though people wanted it and had the perception they

needed it, we didn’t feel it fit right.

• Instead of providing wireless, we committed to providing wired access just about everywhere.

• Concerted effort to wait until we could find a wireless solution that fit well with the way we used the network.

• Everything was fine…for a while.

• In 2004, school was victimized by “The Year of the Worm.”

• Sasser, Blaster worms

• People stored computers over the summer, but when connected, they became zombie hosts for these forms of malware.

• Problem was so bad, had to take dorms offline.

• Then came the next chore: cleaning every machine individually.

• Burned CDs with tools on them for users to clean machines.

• Manually checked every machine before we could bring dorms back online.

• Only one tech person: Me!

• That’s when it hit us—there had to be a better way to handle our Internet access and provide users with the kind of convenience they sought.

• Started looking for a better way to manage access and secure campus network.

• We knew there were open source tools, but those were time-consuming.

• With the help of solution provider named Technology’s Edge, Cate found a NAC from Bradford Networks named “Campus Manager.”

• Solution provider helped in installation.

• System allows me to register each machine and enforce certain levels of compliance.

• System supports wireless but Cate only had wired network at time.

• Next, Cate turned gaze to wireless.• Wanted to continue to register computers.

• Wanted to continue to enforce compliance.

• Campus Manager tool integrates with our Active Directory, so we started looking for wireless solutions to integrate with Campus Manager.

• Narrowed our list down to three choices.

• The winner, after exhaustive review: Trapeze Networks.

• Selected Trapeze in 2008 for a number of reasons:• Elegance of access points

– All Power over Ethernet (PoE)

– Look like smoke detectors

– Lock into place; you can’t take them down without a tool

• Management a factor, too.– Devices can’t work unless they find their controller.

– With redundant controllers, uptime is maximized.

• Ease of mounting– Many buildings on campus are old.

– We had a lot of surface mounts; not a problem for Trapeze Networks.

• Implementation started in 2008.

• Three engineers on site• Two from Trapeze Networks

• One from Technology’s Edge (solution provider)

• Together, these engineers did a physical walk-through of campus, measuring buildings, looking at potential transmission obstacles.

• Goal: Avoid putting access points where anyone sleeps.

• With this information, team planned WLAN installation.

• With this plan in place, we hired a local company to install access points themselves.

• Constraints of implementation:• July vacation planned• Teams worked three weeks in June, then two to three more

weeks in August.

• With APs installed, we had to tweak system through the fall to integrate Campus Manager and Trapeze Networks

• Then we updated enterprise-level virus solution to support Microsoft Vista.

• No. 1: Integration.• Didn’t get both controllers working until late November.• Enterprise-level anti-virus software was buggy as well; because

we now had MS Vista machines on campus, we had to upgrade virus controller, which meant Campus Manager had to be upgraded and Trapeze Networks needed to be integrated again.

• No. 2: Adding capabilities without disturbing environment.

• Because school is old, we had to get creative with some APs.• In one room, we had to hide an access point under a beam,

then paint it with acrylic paint to match the color of the wood.

• Other than these challenges, the system has worked fairly flawlessly.

• Connections on physical switches are way down, which means people are using wireless and it’s working.

• Mornings: 80 people online when I arrive.

• School day: 150 people online.

• Night: 120 people online when I leave.

• People complain to me when things are broken; I’m not hearing about it, which means it’s working.

• Detecting rogue APs• Because we have faculty homes on campus, folks do try to

bring in their own broadband via cable TV, DSL and more.• Trapeze Networks is adaptive, meaning these rogues could

degrade our signal.• We have used Trapeze Networks to identify rogue APs.• Also trying to raise awareness about this.

• Monitoring usage• We do monitor usage; this is why we’re concerned about rogue

APs.• Some kids may have their own broadband cards; that’s a

parent/child issue which we simply can’t control.

• Approaching one year of WLAN service, we plan to survey students and faculty.

• Have you noticed any holes in coverage?

• When do you find system works best?

• We’ll also take laptops around campus to measure signal strength, add APs if necessary.

• Also adding buildings in the next six months• Functional buildings but it’s nice to offer wireless service.

• We’ll put Ethernet drops in the ceilings of these buildings as well.

• Tip 1: Use the capabilities of mapping ahead of time.• We didn’t realize the tools we would have from controller

software.

• Because we mapped AP placement by hand, I’m now having to go back and recreate drawings of where our APs are.

• Tip 2: Be careful where you put APs.• We had one dorm in which a smoke alarm was going off;

students thought AP was smoke alarm and they yanked it off the ceiling to silence it.
