Construction in the 21st century is changing faster than at any time in the sector’s history. Governments are bringing in new regulations for energy and carbon performance. Skilled trades remain in high demand. Urban densification and revitalization efforts change how sites can be accessed by materials and labour. In addition, new and conventional models of construction management are enhanced by Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools and more collaborative processes like Integrated Project Delivery (IPD).
These fundamental changes may be disrupting to some, but innovation in project delivery practices is providing new opportunities for many builders.

sector.
This education and networking event, which includes a stand‐up reception style dinner, brings together three construction and design professionals – each of whom has delivered innovative and sustainable projects. The speakers will highlight the potential for incorporating pre‐fabricated elements to enhance speed, reduce cost and deliver better energy performance. As well, Integrated Project Delivery processes will be profiled for projects large and small, including a case study of the first truly IPD project in Alberta, the Mosaic Centre.
Who Should Attend: This program is designed for large and small contractors, multi‐family residential homebuilders, developers, project managers and suppliers to the construction sector.
Registration Fees: ICBA and VRCA Members ‐‐ $59. Regular Registration ‐‐ $79 Registration Deadline: Friday, March 2nd www.wood‐works.ca/bc
Approved by BC Housing for 3 CPD, Informal training hours
PROUD EVENT PARTNERS:

The Presenters:
Shafraaz Kaba, Partner Architect, Manasc Isaac, Edmonton
Shafraaz Kaba is an architect and partner at Manasc Isaac Architects with offices in Edmonton, Calgary and Bucharest. Over the last 20 years, he has made significant contributions to the design and cultural landscape of Edmonton. Shafraaz was partner‐in‐charge of the Mosaic Centre, Alberta's first true IPD project delivered 3 months ahead of schedule, on budget, and certified LEED Platinum. Shafraaz is currently a board member of the Lean Construction Institute of Canada, and the Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Green Building Council and strongly advocates for both LEAN and green! The
Mosaic Centre is Alberta’s first net‐zero commercial building and aims to be a model of sustainable construction to inspire others to build a better way.
Adam Cohen, Founder and Technical Director at Build Smart, North America
As a recognized North American leader in both the Passivhaus and Integrated Project Delivery movements, he has presented technical papers at both national and international conferences. His leadership in commercial Passivhaus design and IPD has made him a sought‐after speaker, consultant and teacher of advanced courses in market‐rate delivery ultra‐low energy design. He served as Vice‐Chair of the Passive House Institute, US technical committee for 5 years and co‐authored and taught the Passive House Institute
US’s builder training curriculum. Adam is a current board member of Yestermorrow Design/Build School and Passive Buildings Canada. Adam’s presentation will focus on how IPD can deliver projects up to $25 or $30 million, since these are often perceived as too small for an IPD.
Karla Fraser, Senior Project Manager, Urban One Builders Construction Management Inc., Vancouver
Karla has worked in construction for over 20 years and attended the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Civil Engineering Technology program. A move from Manitoba and Alberta to BC has provided opportunities to work in infrastructure, commercial and tower projects. The 18‐storey mass timber hybrid Brock Commons project has been the most exceptional challenge to date with the unique sequencing and speed of construction. Much was learned about the detailed planning, coordination and scheduling in larger and
taller structures using wood. This session will explore what was learned, the broader application of this approach to design and building, and where the industry goes from here. As with any project that pushes boundaries, this structure has generated interest from around the globe for its departure from traditional construction materials, systems and methods. As the senior project manager, Karla was the conductor of a very large orchestra with a back story that goes beyond the innovative mass timber structural system. She will outline the 3D modelling, prefabrication, assembly on site, and the resulting fast construction critical path while highlighting the many new processes used in this amazing project. The result: a viable, repeatable and adaptable building system that may redefine our cityscapes.
