World Percussion Convocation
JOEY GULIZIA, percussion specialist who has been perform-ing since childhood, has an extensive collection of traditional, electric, exotic and world percussion instruments from Cuba, Brazil, Africa, Trinidad, Latin America and other countries. Some of these instruments include congas, bongos, gourds, whistles, didgeridus, pandeiro, agogo bells, steel drums, Afri-can talking drums, and djembe drums. As a percussion spe-cialist he is sought after for radio and television jingles and commercials. Joey has toured this past year in Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. He also tours with Mannheim Steamroller and performs on the annual “Gulizia Brothers Jazz Cruise.” Joey and his brother, Tony Gulizia, keyboard, have been trav-eling to schools for years and teaching the elements of jazz and world music. As exciting music educators and performers, their musical versatility puts them in the middle of symphony orchestras, artists-in-residence in a seven-state area, conducting clinics, making commercial recordings and performing across the United States and abroad. Joey will be featured at the November Convocations. The first performance will be Tuesday, November 1 at 10 a.m. on the Emmetsburg Campus. The second performance will be Wednesday, November 2 at 9 a.m. on the Estherville Campus. Joey will be accompanied by his brother, Tony, on keyboards, and bassist Andy Hall. The public is invited to attend these free performances. The trio will also perform at the Jazz Festival Concert on Wednesday, November 2 at the Pearson Lakes Art Center at 7:30 p.m.. Tickets can be reserved by calling Jan at 712-362-8345. Tickets are $10 adults and $5 students.

Every day we celebrate the arts, but
October is the month to commemo-
rate the arts in a big way. It is
National Arts and Humanities
Month - the largest annual celebra-
tion for the arts and humanities in
the nation.
National Arts and Humanities (NAHM) is a coast-to-coast
collective recognition of the importance of culture in Amer-
ica. It is designed to encourage all Americans to explore
new facets of the arts and humanities in their lives, and to
begin a lifelong habit of active participation in the arts and
humanities. (taken from the website: http://

Calling all Pep Band Alumni and Friends! Alumni and Friends Pep Band will gather Sat., Oct. 29. There is
only 1 alumni game. The game starts at 3. We’ll meet at 1:30 in
the band room, to get organized. What do you think? Let’s do it!
I’d love to have you back! The more the merrier!!!
Please email me ([email protected]) to let me know you’re
planning to play so I have enough folders ready:. Bring your
friends and family, too.
If your lips are completely out of shape, you can play a kazoo, a
tambourine, cowbell, or a noise maker! It should be a great time.
(I have ordered
25 kazoos for
anyone who does-
n’t think their
chops are up to
playing at all…or
if your chops get
too tired or if you
just want to sing
along with us!)
