This is my friend Alex...

...and this is my friend Mike.

I really do like Alex, but he hasn’t got a bike.

We had a great time racing, Mike and I, all day.

I thought Alex didn’t mind at all, my friend would be okay.

Today we went out riding in the big park near my home.

Alex couldn’t come with us so I left him on his own.

Mike and I got ice creams and sat upon the grass.

(Alex must have lots to do to help the time to pass.)

Cycling home that evening we saw Alex and his Dad.

My best friend wouldn’t talk to me. His face looked really sad.

“You should have seen me racing!” I said to make him smile.

But Alex didn’t lift his head, he stared down all the while.

At school he walked right past me. It made me feel ignored.

He left me out at play-time, so I just sat there – bored.

Mike and he were spacemen, landing on the moon.

I hoped the clanging of the bell would ring out very soon.

In we went, the three of us, Mike and Alex first.

If he had felt left out that day now I was feeling worse.

Pushing past I shoved him. I don’t know why I did.

I ran towards the stair well and underneath I hid.

If Alex now was hurting, then I was really glad.

He was being horrible, and I was feeling mad.

Suddenly I saw a face, my teacher, Mr Clare.

“Hello young Sam,” he said to me, “why are you in there?”

Alex sat down next to me. My arms were folded tight.

He turned his head away from me, so I wasn’t in his sight.

“He didn’t take me racing,” said Alex to the wall.

“I thought he didn’t like me, and he didn’t care at all.”

“Because I didn’t have a bike you didn’t think of me.

My Mum bought me a skateboard - that’s as fast as bikes can be.”

Alex turned to look at me, with tears in his eyes.

(I know someone is hurting when a person cries.)

“I do,” I shouted loudly. “Calm down,” said Mr Clare,

“getting overheated won’t get us anywhere.”

The End

I had caused that hurting. It made me feel ashamed,

that I had been so thoughtless I had myself to blame.

“I’m sorry I was selfish,” I said to my best friend.

“I hope that you’ll still play with me and forgive me in the end.”

“It’s okay,” sniffed Alex. “I never hated you.

But next time can I come along and race my skateboard too?”

“Right-io!” said Mr Clare, “Another fall out solved -

a happy little outcome for everyone involved.”

We talked about our feelings, so we’ll be pals for good,

and explore that moon together the way that best friends should!
