Tree and Shrub Planting GuideOne of the most common causes for failure of new trees and shrubs to thrive is improper planting. Proper planting of trees and shrubs allows the root structure to re-establish itself more quickly, leading to healthier, faster growing plants. The following guidelines will help ensure successful transplanting of your newly purchased tree or shrub.
Digging the Hole: Dig a hole the same depth and two to three times the width of the diameter of the root ball. A hole which is too narrow and deep is a common mistake when planting. Your tree or shrub needs to be set on a firm base, with a sufficient amount of loos-ened soil around it for roots to grow into. Loosening the soil around the sides of the hole with your spade, especially in soils with high clay content, will allow water to more easily penetrate into the root zone.
Container Plants: Carefully remove plant from the pot by strik-ing the sides and bottom until loosened. Use your hands to loosen compacted roots. If a plant is “potbound” or has spiraling roots it may be necessary to either cut the circling roots or use your shovel to loosen up the root ball. Set your tree or shrub in the hole so that the soil level of the root ball is even or slightly above (1/2 to 1 inch) ground level. Do not set plant to deep in the hole. Backfill soil into the hole lightly compressing as you fill to eliminate air pockets. Be careful not to compact soil too much which will inhibit water reaching the roots.
Balled and Burlapped (B & B) Plants: Cut any string or twine holding the burlap. It is not necessary to remove the burlap itself or any wire cages surrounding the ball, however the burlap at the top of the root ball should be should be cut away from the base of the plant. The top of the root ball should be even or slightly higher (1/2 to 1 inch) with the ground level. Backfill soil into the hole lightly compressing as you fill to eliminate air pockets. Be careful not to compact soil too much which will inhibit water from reaching the roots.
Mulch: Place a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around the tree or shrub to conserve soil moisture. The mulch layer should be wider than the root ball, ideally extending out past the canopy of your tree or maximum diameter of shrubs. The further out you can lay mulch the better. Do not mound mulch or place against the trunk or base of your plant. Your mulch layer should be flat and pulled back several inches away from the plant base.
Watering: Water thoroughly after planting. The root ball of a newly planted tree or shrub dries out quickly and should be checked every couple of days. A general rule of thumb is that newly planted trees and shrubs require 2 inches of water per week. It is always best to water slowly and deeply once or twice a week. Watering lightly more often will encourage the roots to grow too shallowly resulting in a weaker, less healthy plant. Once established an inch of water per week is sufficient. Adjust watering according to weather conditions and remember that overwatering is just as harmful as under watering.
Transplant Shock: Some plants may suffer from the condition of transplant shock resulting from a loss of roots. Yellowing, drop-ping and undersized leaves as well as some twig die back and slow growth are symptoms to watch for. These symptoms should disap-pear as the plant adjusts to its new surroundings, which can take up
to 2 years. Adequate care will not eliminate transplant shock but will help to decrease symptoms and aid in the plants’ recovery.
Watering Guide
Trees And Shrubs
Trees and shrubs have varied watering needs depending on many fac-tors including the type of plant, its age, soil conditions, sun exposure, wind conditions, temperatures, and rainfall. An even and thorough soaking to a depth of 6” to 8” is recommended to ensure moisture penetration to the entire root system. In order to achieve this, either a soaker hose around the base of the plant or a garden hose running at a slow trickle can be used. A general time guideline is 20 to 30 minutes of soaking for shrubs or one hour for a tree. To check soil moisture, a stick can be pushed 6” to 8” into the ground near the base of the plant. If the stick comes out clean, the soil is too dry and more water is needed. Soaking should be done about once a week depending on weather conditions. Remember that overwatering can be just as harm-ful as under watering.
Groundcovers & Perennials
Groundcovers and perennials should be checked for watering every other day for the first month after planting. If the plants need water, a thorough soaking is recommended. Once established, one inch of water per week is sufficient.
Shrub Roses
Water shrub roses such as Knock Out varieties regularly (as often as twice a week) until established and then during any extended dry periods. Apply water to the root zone only and not over the top of the plant which can lead to leaf spot and disease.
Lawns
Newly seeded lawns should be kept moist but not wet by watering just until slight puddling occurs. Once the new grass becomes more established, watering frequency can be systematically reduced over several weeks. This allows the roots to strengthen and adapt to more normal conditions. Be cautious not to over water your lawn (large puddles) or under water (dried out brown turf or cracks in soil).
Newly laid sod should be watered immediately and then soaked daily for the first few weeks after installation. Watering with a lawn sprinkler for 20 to 30 minutes per area will insure that the water soaks through the sod to the undersoil where it is needed for proper root development. Pay close attention to the corners as they are easily missed.
Fertilization GuideFertilizer can improve soil, increase plant vigor, induce greener leaves, promote blooming and even strengthen a plant’s resistance to certain insects and diseases. Too much fertilizer, however, can be damaging. Always follow a product’s label directions; this is one case where more is not better. The following guidelines will help you select the correct fertilizer for your needs.
• For general plant maintenance, a balanced formulation, such as 10-10-10, is recommended. (The formula numbers found
Hinsdale Nurseries (630) 323-1411
38
on fertilizers refer to the amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium contained in the product, in that order).
• Some broadleaf evergreens, such as rhododendron and box-wood, benefit from a more acidic soil. Holly-tone, a product available in our retail office, is ideal for acid loving plants.
• Flowering annuals will bloom more prolifically with the use of a time release high phosphorous fertilizer such as Miracle–Gro Shake ‘n Feed Bloom Booster flower food.
• Spring blooming bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, and crocus benefit from a long-lasting, slow release fertilizer such as Bulb-tone.
• Roses will produce more plentiful and beautiful blooms with the use of a long lasting natural fertilizer such as Rose-Tone.
• Spring is the best time to apply fertilizer when plants are actively growing. Application in the fall is not recommended as it encourages new growth just before winter, often result-ing in frost damage to these new tips.
Pruning GuidePruning enhances the natural shape of plants by evening out areas that have grown faster than others. Pruning should also be used to remove dead or damaged wood or to train plants to a desired shape. The fol-lowing guidelines will help keep your plants healthy and looking their best.
Trees and Shrubs
• Whenever possible, remove branches where they meet the trunk when pruning trees. We do not recommend the use of a pruning sealer. It is best to let the tree heal naturally.
• Spring blooming deciduous shrubs, such as forsythia, lilacs, crabapples, and viburnum should be pruned immediately after flowering. Summer blooming and other deciduous shrubs should be pruned in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. Evergreen shrubs should be pruned after the new growth has hardened off in late spring or early sum-mer (before July 4th).The best time to prune deciduous trees is late winter to early spring, before they have leafed out. For information of when to prune hydrangeas please ask for a copy of our hydrangea guide.
• Dead wood can be pruned from trees and shrubs at any time. Branches will appear brown and dry when scratched with a fingernail or knife. Stems that are green and supple are still alive.
• Remove branches which cross or rub together, which can lead to damage of one or both branches. Remove the least desirable branch. Some species, such as Serviceberries, are prone to having numerous branches that cross. Be careful not to remove too many branches at one time which can harm the plant. As a general rule, do not remove more than one third of the plant per year.
Perennials
• Deadhead (remove spent blooms as they fade) to encourage re-blooming and keep the garden looking neat.
• Cut back leggy (stretched) plants by one third to encourage
new growth and extend the life of your perennials during the late summer.
Shrub Roses
• Prune in late winter or early spring before shrubs leaf out. Remove dead or damaged branches and prune to shape if desired. Shrub roses may be pruned back at this time if you would like to keep them to a certain height. These plants also respond well to renewal pruning. Cut back one third of the oldest branches to the ground every 3 years to encourage new growth.
• Shrub rose are self-cleaning and do not need to be deadhead-ed, however doing so may improve the appearance of your shrub and encourage new growth.
Groundcovers
• Prune groundcovers in early spring so that new growth will quickly cover bare stems. Any winter burn, yellowed or dis-colored foliage, should also be removed at this time.
• Avoid pruning groundcover in late fall. Groundcover pruned at this time can produce new tender growth which is often damaged by cold temperatures.
Mulching GuideAn application of shredded mulch is beneficial for your landscape. Mulch conserves moisture in the soil and helps to lessen soil tempera-ture fluctuations which can damage root development. An adequate layer of mulch will also help prevent weed seeds from germinating, and enhance the natural beauty of garden beds.
We recommend shredded hardwood bark as mulch for the following reasons.
• Erosion control- the shredded material knits together to form a single layer.
• Organic- it is non-toxic and adds nutrients to the soil during composition.
• Long lasting- it is a combination of red and white oak which decomposes slowly.
• Color-the dark brown color compliments most landscapes.
Trees And Shrubs
Mulch should be applied to a 2”-4” depth around trees and ever-greens. Avoid piling any mulch directly up against the trunk of a tree or shrub to prevent insect and disease problems. Ideally the mulched area should extend past the canopy of your tree or to the maximum diameter of a shrub. This is not always possible in a home landscape, so tree rings are commonly 4’-8’ in diameter.
Perennials
Mulching is recommended to a depth of 2” to help keep weeds down and conserve moisture during summer.
Shrub Roses
Apply a 2” layer of mulch around the root zone leaving at least a 1” gap around the trunk of the plant to prevent any disease problems.

Winter Preparation GuideAll plants sold by Hinsdale Nurseries are winter hardy for our area (zone 5). The following guidelines will ensure your plants continued health through the cold months.
Trees & Shrubs
• Evergreens should be well watered throughout the fall, until the first hard frost, to prevent excessive needle dropping or browning.
• Broadleaf evergreens (rhododendron, holly, euonymus and boxwood) benefit from a late fall application of an anti-tran-spirant spray, such as WiltPruf, to prevent moisture loss in the foliage.
• Deciduous trees and shrubs should be watered and mulched before the ground freezes to protect the roots over the winter and aid in spring growth. Shredded bark should be applied around the base of the roots, being careful not to bury the trunk where it touches the soil, to avoid rotting.
Perennials
• Water through a dry fall but do not overwater. Perennials need less moisture as they shut down for the winter.
• Most perennials can be cut back to the ground in late fall. This will keep the garden clean and neat for winter. Perennials that give winter interest, such as ornamental grasses, should not be cut back until new growth begins to emerge in the early spring.
• Woody perennials, such as butterfly bush, should be pruned when they start leafing out in the spring and should be cut back by one third.
• Mulch around the root area of most perennials to a depth of at least 2 inches. The mulch should be pulled back several inches from around the base of plants in early spring to avoid disease and rotting.
Shrub Roses
• Shrub roses should continue to be watered until the first hard frost.
• Shrub roses should not be cut back or pruned in the fall.
• Mulch around the base of the plants to a depth of 2 to 4 inch-es, extending past the width of the plant. As with perennials, mulch should be pulled back several inches from the base of the plants in early spring to prevent disease and rotting.

Pruning Hydrangeas
Why isn’t it blooming? This is the most common question homeowners have regarding hydrangeas. Light conditions, winter protection and pruning requirements will all affect the success of hydrangea blooms. Some hydrangeas bloom on old wood (the previous year’s growth), while others bloom on new wood (the current year’s growth). Knowing which hydrangea species you have planted will aid in the success of your garden. The following guidelines will help provide the general care needed to encourage blooms.
Hydrangea anomala ssp. Petiolaris: (Climbing Hydrangea) Do not cut back unless you are trying to train the vine to a certain direction. This plant only needs to be pruned to remove dead branches.
Hydrangea aborescens: (Smooth Hydrangea) Common varieties are ‘Annabelle’, ‘Bella Anna’, ‘lncrediball’, and ‘lnvincibelle Spirit’. These bloom on new wood and can be pruned to about 6-8” from the ground any time between late fall and early spring.
Hydrangea macrophylla: (Bigleaf Hydrangea) Common varieties are ‘Blushing Bride’, ‘Bloomstruck’, ‘Endless Summer’, ‘Let’s Dance’, and ‘Twist & Shout.’ These bloom primarily on old wood, but can bloom later in the summer on new wood. Prune in early spring, only removing dead tips/branches. Any further pruning will eliminate potential flower buds.
Hydrangea paniculata: (Panicle Hydrangea) Common varieties are ‘Limelight’, ‘Little Lime’, ‘Bobo’, ‘Tardiva’, ‘Pee Gee’, ‘Pink Diamond’, ‘Quick Fire’, ‘Unique’, ‘White Diamonds’, and ‘Vanilla Strawberry’. Since these bloom on new wood, prune in early spring to shape or cut back.
Hydrangea quercifolia: (Oakleaf Hydrangea). Common varieties include ‘Alice’ and ‘Snow Queen’. These bloom on old and new wood. For maximum bloom, pruning should only be done in spring to shape the plant or cut out dead branches.
NOTE: Hydrangeas that bloom on new wood will bloom later in the summer as they need time to send up the new shoots and produce flower buds all in one season. Those that bloom on old wood will bloom earlier as the flower buds are set in the prior year.
