Claim 1043 ."helu 78 [Claim 78: see See K/A Kahonu file] Kamakahonu 1043"

NR 603.2: claims pahale; bought one at Kaopuaua [Honolulu] from KingKamehahema III for $400.00

claim at Kikihale: Koia, witness, says Clt's makuakane Kaiakoili [hismother's brother] came from Hawaii and had the place in 1822; he[Kaiakoili] got it from Makulu and Kaio [w., wife of Kawailepolepo]. Itwas wasteland; he dug a well and built a house. He died in March 1831[sic; 1834]; the land went to Clt's Mother Walawala; she died and land wentto Kamakahonu. CIt. rented it to foreigners. There are 8 houses within.

Hoomoeapuleconfirmsabove. .NT 430.2 December 17, 1847Koia, sworn says, this place is at Kikihale. In 1822 this place was

given (lilo) to Kaiakoili, the makuakane [uncle] of Kamakahomi. Malulu[sic; read Makulu] and Kaio, whose place this was, gave it to Kaiakoili.Kaiakoili made the wooden fence and the spring and the houses. When hedied the place went to Kekuapoi [his wife] for Kamakahonu. When Kaiakoilidied, on March 24, 1834, and Kekuapoi died on July 1st 1847, all thesethings descended to Kamakahonu. He rented this place to the haole; manydependents of Kamakahonu are there, and 8 houses.

Mauka, Maau's enclosure; Ewa [Mere] Hoomoapule's; makai a small road;WaikikiMikila's [Mitchell] place.

Hoomoeapule, sworn, confirms Koia's testimony in all parts.FT 98.2 says Kaiakoili his "father" died in March of 1831.

[Correct: uncle; Kaiakoili died March 24, 1834]LCA 1043

(RPs 1651/1754) Kikihale and Beretania St. 0.66 ac/2 ap.(Aw. Bk. 2:421; Inc/ices330)On Greer Map; apana I is on Beretania St. at head of Fort;apana 2 is in Kikihale between Maunakea St. and the river, maukaof "Theater Alley" [Hotel St.].

159Kamakahonu "is the konohiki at Maunawili in Kailua" Koolaupoko, Oahu.(From NR 298.6 #5459-H Kaiwikahi for PH)

Kamakahonu was born Jan. 25, 1817 (LDS gen. records); died before 1878.Married Maria Beckley, daughter of K/A William Beckley.Kamakahonu's mother, Walawala, and her brother Kaiakoili were the

children of the Naeole who took the baby Kamehameha to Awini, Kohala, athis birth. .

[Do not follow Kamakau 1961, Ruling Chieft of Hawaii page68-69--the translation is badly garbled. Here is t~e correct:

After it was learned that Naeole was the person who had taken thechild, he was made the child's guardian, and Kalaniopuu made his kaikaina[his true younger brother] Kekunuialeimoku the child's foster father (makuahanai)].
