    CHRONOLOGY

    1971Lynchburg Baptist College is founded by Dr. JerryFalwell, pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

    1972Lynchburg Baptist gains affiliation with the Na-tional Christian Collegiate Association.

    1973Lynchburg Baptist fields its first club baseballteam, coached by Gaylord Davis. The team prac-tices at Miller Park and Sandusky ElementarySchool. The games are held at Lynchburg CityStadium.

    1974Lynchburg Baptist fields its first intercollegiatevarsity team, coached by Al Worthington.

    1975Lynchburg Baptist College is renamed LibertyBaptist College with the colors changing fromGreen and Gold to Red, White and Blue. TheFlames join the National Association of Intercolle-giate Athletics as an associate member.

    1976Clay Elliott and Jeff Mincey are the first Flames tobe drafted. Elliott is picked by the Atlanta Bravesand Mincey by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Flamespost their first 30-win season, finishing 31-10.

    1978Bernie Young signs a free agent contract with theChicago White Sox.

    1979The Flames move to Liberty Field, their first on-campus home.

    1980Liberty Baptist joins the NCAA at the Division IIlevel as an associate member. The Flames posttheir second 30-plus win season. Richard DeWittis named the school's first GTE/CoSida AcademicAll-American.

    1981Liberty Baptist joins the NCAA at the Division IIlevel and becomes eligible for NAIA postseasoncompetition. The team finishes fifth in the NAIAWorld Series. Sid Bream earned All-Americanhonors. Bream and Lee Guetterman are drafted,Bream by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Guetter-man by the Seattle Mariners.

    1982The Flames finish fifth in the NAIA World Seriesfor the second-consecutive year. Renard Brown isselected as an All-American and drafted by theSeattle Mariners. Doug Smith is drafted by theMinnesota Twins.

    1983Sid Bream becomes the first former Liberty base-ball player to break into the major leagues withthe Los Angeles Dodgers. Liberty Baptist finishesfifth in the NAIA World Series for the third-consec-utive season. Darrell Manuel earns All-Americanhonors. Liberty Baptist finishes with a 40-plus winseason, the first year to do so.

    1984Liberty drops its NAIA membership and becomeseligible for NCAA Division II postseason participa-tion. Baseball moves from NAIA to NCAA DivisionI, the only sport at the school to make the moveto Division I in 1984.

    1985Liberty Baptist College becomes Liberty Univer-sity.

    1986Liberty Field is renamed Worthington Field inhonor of the school's first baseball coach, Al Wor-thington. In May, Bobby Richardson becomesLiberty's second head baseball coach, replacingAl Worthington who started the program. Pat Sipeand Niles Creekmore sign free agent contractswith the Montreal Expos.

    1987Clint Horsley is drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals.

    1988Randy Tomlin is drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

    Sept. 1, 1989All of Liberty's athletic teams move to the NCAADivision I level.

    1989Tony Beasley and Doug Reynolds are drafted bythe Baltimore Orioles. Jamey Mason is drafted by

    the California Angels but opts to return for the1990 season.

    May 1990Johnny Hunton becomes Liberty's third headbaseball coach, replacing Bobby Richardson.

    June 1990Todd Samples is drafted by the Montreal Expos,while Frank Speek is drafted by the St. Louis Car-dinals.

    1991Doug Brady is drafted by the Chicago White Sox.

    May 1991Brady is chosen All-South Atlantic Region and tothe ECAC All-Star team. Chris Robbins is chosento the Virginia All-State team. Head CoachJohnny Hunton is named the Virginia StateCoach of the Year by the Virginia Sports Informa-tion Directors.

    July 1, 1991Liberty becomes an official member of the BigSouth Conference.

    May 1992Danny Brahn becomes the first Liberty player toearn Big South All-Conference first team honors.

    May 1993Liberty University wins the Big South ConferenceBaseball Tournament and becomes the school'sfirst NCAA Division I team to see action in thepostseason.

    June 1993Rich Humphrey is drafted by the Houston Astros.

    June 1994Terry Weaver is drafted in the 23rd round by theCincinnati Reds.

    October 1996Liberty University announces plans to build abaseball clubhouse adjacent to the third basedugout. This will be equipped with a locker roomand a concession area.

    June 1997David Benham is drafted in the 41st round by theNew York Mets

    August 1997Liberty announces that long-time assistant coachDave Pastors will become the fourth head coachin the school’s history. Former Flame standoutJeff Edwards is named as his first assistant.

    September 1997 Former Flames pitcher and major leaguer, RandyTomlin is named to the second assistant coach-ing position.

    May 10, 1998Liberty wins the Big South Conference Tourna-ment in Rock Hill, S.C. The Flames represent theconference in the Atlantic II Regional Tournamentin Tallahassee, Fla., facing No. 10 Florida State(7-10) and No. 8 Auburn (2-3).

    June 1998The Flames have five players drafted in the majorleague draft, tying Arizona State and Florida Statewith the most players drafted from one team.David Benham (12th, Boston Red Sox), SteveWright (17th, Seattle Mariners), Tim Harrell (20th,Los Angeles Dodgers), Benji Miller (21st, SanFrancisco Giants) and Jason Benham (37th, Balti-

    more Orioles) are Liberty’s draftees. David Daltonsigns a free agent contract with the ChilicothePaints of the Frontier Independent League.

    September 1998Atlanta Braves sign David Dalton to a free agentcontract for the 1999 season.

    1999During the summer of 1999, a 5,200 square-foothitting area is constructed along the leftfield sideof Worthington Stadium. It is complete withlighted batting cages and modern hitting equip-ment. The field receives a face-lift as newBermuda grass is laid in the infield. During thewinter, a new netting backstop is put in place anda new sound system is purchased for the sta-dium.

    2000The Flames win the Big South Championship forthe second time in three years and the third timein the history of the program. Liberty representsthe Big South Conference at the NCAA Regionalsin Columbia, S.C., where they won the first NCAADivision I Tournament game for any Liberty sportsteam; over Seton Hall, 10-2. In June, senior BrianAdams is drafted in the eighth round by theBoston Red Sox while junior Dan Valentin is se-lected in the 31st round by the Oakland Athletics.Liberty's Keith Butler and Joey Monahan becomeLiberty's first Freshman All-Americans, achievingthe honors given out by Baseball America andCollegiate Baseball.

    2001 (Fall)Liberty baseball opens its brand new, state-of-the-art, Crowder/Muckel Fieldhouse. The 13,000-square foot building contains two retractablebatting and pitching tunnels; home, visitor, coachand umpire locker rooms; uniform laundry andstorage room, training room, weight room andteam room. The new fieldhouse is also home tonew offices for the Liberty coaching staff andhouses enclosed box seats for booster clubmembers, complete with a kitchen area andclosed-circuit television.

    2002Five Flames; Joey Monahan (Chicago Cubs-7thround), Keith Butler (Chicago Cubs-10th round),Matt Hagen (Seattle Mariners-12th round),Jonathan Schneider (Pittsburgh Pirates-15thround) and Steve Baker (San Diego Padres-29thround); are chosen in the 2002 MLB Draft. On July 18, Matt Royer is named the program’sfifth head coach. Royer, a 1980 Liberty graduate,replaces Dave Pastors, who resigned at the endof the 2002 season.

    2003Two Flames; Larry Wayne York (Montreal Expos-14th round) and Erich Cloninger (Boston RedSox- 35th round) are chosen in the 2003 MLBDraft.

    2004Jason Jones is chosen in the fourth round of the2004 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees.

    2005The Flames post the ninth 30-plus win season inprogram history and tie the program record forDivision I victories with 36. Aaron Grijalva be-comes Liberty’s third Freshman All-America as heis honored by Collegiate Baseball. Left-handerDavid Bechtold (Colorado-28th) is chosen in the2005 MLB Draft.

    2006Matt Royer’s squad breaks the school record forDivision I wins with 39 victories. It marks thefourth time in program history the Flames haveposted back-to-back 30-plus win seasons aftertheir 36 in 2005. Liberty right-hander Michael Sol-bach (Arizona-48th) is chosen in the 2006 MLBDraft.

    2007Liberty posts a 30-plus win campaign for the thirdstraight season for only the second time in schoolhistory. Two Flames, Michael Solbach (Arizona-19th) and Garrett Young (Boston-46th), are takenin the 2007 MLB Draft. On June 24, Jim Toman isnamed the program’s sixth head coach. Tomanreplaces Matt Royer, who resigned at the end ofthe 2007 season.

    2008On March 28, the first night contest is played atLiberty’s Worthington Stadium. The Flames wenton to record their fourth-straight 30-plus win sea-son for the first time in the history of the programunder first year coach Jim Toman, breaking sev-eral school records in the process. Liberty’s 35wins were the most in program history under afirst year coach. Flames’ pitchers, Ryan Page(Toronto – 20th round) and David Stokes (Detroit– 28th round), are selected in the 2008 MLB Draft.
