TithebarnYoungpersonsTheatrethis project marked an opportunity to create an urban environment in which young people could express themselves, in the form of theatre. young people have been isolated from society and the ideology behind this design was to reconnect the relationship. Not only for the young people them-selves, but also towards the good of a community. The site provided was within the urban context of Preston and close in proximity to the land-marks of the harris museum, bus station and guild theatre.

From research into the origins of theatre, i came across the concept of a mask and it having metaphorical existance within my project. in ancient greek theatre, the mask was used as an object to add depth to each performance. this was down to the fact that there were only 3/4 actors per play. this mask also helped them disguise their true identity to the crowd, which in turn provided protection against their social standing. it didnt matter where each actor originated from, the audience judged them on their performance solely. creating the building as a ‘mask’, would enable young people who have had tough childhoods a chance to showcase their talents, without people who have had tough childhoods a chance to showcase their talents, without being discriminated against from their backgrounds.
