Note:
Moment loads are app l ied about the long i tud ina l ax is of the hor i zonta l vesse l.
(Moment load is Norm al to Vessel)
For most common shell and tube heat exchangers, vertical deadloads should normally be distributed with 60% to the channel end support and 40% to the shell end
support. However, the actual exchanger shape and support configuration should be reviewed when determining weight distribution because in many cases load
distribution may vary.
Most vendor drawings for heat exchangers indicate the location of the center of gravity. This center of gravi ty wi l l dictate the load dist r ibu t ion between the
f i xed and s l id ing sup por t s . That is, the closer the CG to either support the greater load that support will carry. In the absence of such information, the 60%-40%
load distribution can be taken into account.
To account for weight of piping that might exist above the exchanger, empty & operating weights shall be increased by 20% for exchangers with diameters less than
24 inches or by 10% for exchangers with diameters 24 inch and greater. A load of an additional 10% of applicable weight (empty, operating, test) shall be applied for
other horizontal vessels of all sizes.
The eccentric piping loads shall be applied at a perpendicular horizontal distance of D/2 plus 18 inches (where D = vessel basic diameter). This additional eccentric
load ( vertical load and moment caused by eccentricity) should be distributed to each pedestal in proportion to the distribution of weights. For stacked exchangers,
the weight of only the largest exchanger should be used to estimate the eccentric load.
