RIG INSPECTION SERVICES FOR KENGEN DRILLING RIGS & API
CATEGORY I & II RIG INSPECTION TRAINING FOR THE DRILLING CREW

In accordance with the Tender for Procurement of API Category III Rig Inspection for KenGen
Drilling Rigs & API Category I & II Rig Inspection Training for the Drilling Crew, KenGen
hereby issues Clarification No. 3.

1 (a) i. As there is a wide range of items covered
under API Cat III, what specific items do
you require to be inspected?
ii. What inspections have been completed on
this equipment previously, including
internal (drill crew) and external (third
party)?
iii. What standards have the rigs been
manufactured to?
iv. Is there a reason why you are now looking
for third party inspections? Have there been
any incidents or accidents?
v. Does KenGen operate an existing
maintenance system with regime?
vi. Is there the ability for equipment to be
removed from site for inspection depending
on specific items?
vii. Is there a timeframe for the rigs being
available for the next piece of work?
i. Only rig components within the
scope of works recommended by
API for Category III inspections.
ii. This is the first inspection for
the rig components.
iii. API standards.
iv. This is condition-based
inspection. No major incidents
or accidents have been recorded.
v. No
vi. All inspections shall be on site.
vii. The contract shall be one year
and all inspections and training
shall be concluded before expiry
of this period.
2 (b) As API RP 4G, API CAT I, II & III Rig
Inspection is only for derrick, crown block and
substructure, so only those three parts should be
inspected. Please confirm the scope of
inspection?

3 Kindly confirm in the case of joint venture, if
the financial statements of all the companies in
the joint venture shall be submitted and
evaluated or the financial statements of one of
the company in the JV suffices for all
In case of joint venture, the parties
to the agreement must be defined
with their roles. Where a Fnancier is
defined his financial statement will
be evaluated
Otherwise, JV as an entity must
ensure they all meet the tender
requirement jointly.
Can inexperienced Kenya company with interest
in developing rig inspection local capabilities
partner with highly experienced international
company that meets all the tender criteria and
serve as the Kenyan company’s technical
partner to deliver the services thereby ensuring
capacity development and knowledge transfer to
the local company and its staff OR shall the
experience of all bidding companies in a JV be
subjected to evaluation.
