BACKGROUND

The first ICOMOS Principles for the Preservation of Historic Timber Structures (the

Principles) were accepted at the International Assembly of the ICOMOS International

held in Morelia, México in 1999 where experts discussed the importance of having

regulations for the preservation of the timber structures.

After 13 years the updating of the Principles began at the 18th Symposium and General

Conference at the Museo Regional of Guadalajara, México in 2012, where many experts

from Japan, Italy, Argentina, France and México recognized that a new element of the

patrimony had to be considered as an important matter in conservation and regulation:

the interdependency of natural, social and technical aspects taken together in an holistic

dynamic. New agents of decay that threatened the conservation of the monumental

timber structures also had to be taken into consideration.

In September 2013, members of the IIWC committee met in Himeji Centre for visits to

castles and fortifications, to the Himeji-jo Castle Conservation site in Himeji City, Japan,

where the 19th Conference and Symposium took place. There the situation of the

wooden cultural heritage was reviewed. Country wooden patrimony reports were

submitted. The revision of the Principles were outlined for the next year as a revised

edition in the General Assembly in Florence, Italy.

In November of the 2014, in an IIWC meeting held at the Architectural Faculty of

Florence University, all members/participants agreed that the final Principles must be

reviewed in collaboration with other scientific and national committees. Since then

other meetings have been organised to discuss the Principles, such as the Round Table

discussion during the SHATIS 3° conference in Wroclaw, Poland in September 2015. The

revision of the Principles of Conservation of Historic Timber Structures, according to

the proposed schedule of the International Secretariat of ICOMOS, should be finished

and accepted in 2017.

Thus we hope to continue the discussion and finalize the updating of the Principles at

the meeting in Falun Sweden from 13–16 April 2016. We invite members of the IIWC

and other ICOMOS committees to attend this meeting where we believe we have the

opportunity to establish criteria for protecting and preserving historic timber

structures and wooden cultural heritage worldwide. Those who require information

from previous discussions should request this through the conference email:
