The City commemorated the 20th anniversary of the 9/11

attacks at various events throughout the city, and with a

memorial display in front of the Police Headquarters, Bldg. 11.

A “never forget” banner was hung above nearly 3,000 flags that honored each of the lives taken

on Sept. 11, 2001.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department held a remembrance ceremony Saturday morning for staff,

families and members of Virginia Task Force 2 (VA-TF2). They unveiled a 9/11 tribute

memorial, which included scale replicas of the World Trade Center Towers and a blast resistant

pane of glass from the Pentagon.

To pay tribute and honor the sacrifices of fallen first responders, members of the Fire, Police and

EMS departments, Sheriff’s Office and VA-TF2 took turns carrying a 7-foot long, 700-pound

9/11 Honor Log for the “Carry On” event at the Oceanfront. VBFD members also represented

Virginia Beach at the Richmond 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, which equals the 110 stories of the

World Trade Center.

The day’s remembrance events culminated with more than 400 people coming together to

memorialize 9/11 at the Remember, Reflect and Renew event at Mount Trashmore. Hosted by

Parks & Recreation in collaboration with Convention & Visitors Bureau, the evening’s program

included live music, video footage and a joint Honor Guard representing Fire, Police and

Sheriff’s Office. Members of the 2001 and current VA-TF2 were present. The 9/11 Honor Log

and the 9/11 Tribute Memorial were on display for public viewing. Attendees were touched by

the events and expressed gratitude and shared stories remembering this significant day in our

nation’s history.

series. The event will start at 8:30 a.m. at the Advanced

Information Technology recently collaborated with the offices of the City Treasurer and

Commissioner of the Revenue and external vendors to upgrade the City’s online payment site,

Pay.VBepay.com. It offers a convenient way to submit payments for real estate and personal

property taxes, parking tickets, and more. The site has undergone several enhancements since

January 2020, including options to apply for, file and renew business licenses. The latest upgrade

allows businesses to file and pay monthly and quarterly trustee taxes online.

During the deployment, IT and other departments provided plenty of testing support to ensure

the new features were available and functioning for the public. This successful collaboration

illustrates how IT is simplifying government interactions by improving customer experience and

empowering citizens to complete important transactions without having to visit a City office.

Public Works is taking part in the Lynnhaven River

Basin Ecosystem Restoration Project, which includes

restoration goals for 38 acres of wetland, 31 acres of reef

habitat and 94 acres of submerged aquatic vegetation

(SAV). A portion of each of those goals is included in

Phase 1 with 5.5 acres of wetlands at Princess Anne

High School, 8 acres of reef habitat between Keeling

Cove and Dix Creek, and 6.3 acres of SAV near First

Landing State Park.

An Interactive Field Day has been planned for Princess

Anne High School for Tuesday, Sept. 21 to introduce the

students to all three restoration types incorporated in the LRBER Project. A portion of the

wetland site has been set aside for the students to help plant.

As a priority Tier 1 Tributary and the largest tidal estuary in Virginia Beach, the Lynnhaven

River is home to important foraging grounds, nesting areas, and migratory habitat for fish and

wildlife resources. The LRBER project is a cost participation between the City and the U.S.

Army Corps of Engineers to be completed in multiple phases.

Human Services Infant Program has moved to a new home in the Pembroke Six Office

Building, 297 Independence Blvd., Suite 423. The program closed the previous location on

Tuesday, Sept. 14 and reopened in its new space today, Sept. 17. The phone and fax numbers

remain the same: (757) 385-4400 and (757) 496-6825.

In addition to the newly relocated Infant Program, Pembroke Six houses Human Services’ Adult

Outpatient Mental Health Services, Child & Youth Mental Health Services, Developmental

Services, and Emergency Mental Health Services.

Virginia Beach Public Library staff created and delivered 74

activity kits to Virginia Beach senior citizens living in low-

income/retirement locations during August and early September:

• 41 to Luther Manor

• 21 to Sullivan House

• 12 to Russell House

These kits provide seniors in these locations with an activity to do

while they are unable to access in-person outreach services due to

COVID-19 safety measures. The activity kits are created

specifically for older adults by a VBPL Adult Services Librarian,

assembled by a library volunteer and supported by a grant from

the Friends of the Virginia Beach Public Library.

The Virginia Beach Central Library is

currently hosting an exhibit, “Determined: The

400-Year Struggle for Black Equality.” On

loan from the Virginia Museum of History &

Culture, the exhibit explores four centuries of

Black history in Virginia through stories of

Virginians who fought for equal rights. The

exhibit will run until Oct. 18.
