Kenro Izu is not only a great artist, but a great humanitarian. I think what he has
accomplished in these 20 years, what you all accomplished in these 20 years, is
extraordinary. To think that there is a hospital in Angkor that has treated over
1.5 million children since 1999 is amazing.
The emphasis on care, compassion, and empathy is at the heart of Kenro’s artistry.
Not only is this work special in the fact that it is tied to making art to celebrate some
of the most sacred places in the world, but this work is also helping the people who
actually inspire his art - a great connection that only an artist like Kenro Izu could make.
He couldn’t do that without all of you, all of his friends who have made the effort to
realize his dream and allow for other people’s dreams to be alive. The work continues,
and we are already celebrating the building of yet another hospital, this time in Laos,
where there is an unbelievable need.
The indefatigable energy of Kenro Izu, and his generous vision of sharing and using
his art so that people can actually have better lives is such a worthy cause for you
to support and for all of us to pay attention to. So dear friends, thank you, and
thank you for your continued support.

Looking back at the creation of Friends Without A Border 20 years ago, numerous
touching memories pass before my eyes. I can still vividly remember my life-changing
moment of a little girl passing away in front of my eyes, back in 1994 at the provincial
hospital of Siem Reap, Cambodia.
What started as my dream to provide free and compassionate care to children of
Cambodia has grown far beyond my original vision. It was with great pride that our
first child, Angkor Hospital for Children took the first step as an independent hospital
in 2013, led by the Cambodian doctors and nurses we had trained for many years.
And I am so delighted to see that they are now helping us nurture our second child,
Lao Friends Hospital for Children in Luang Prabang.
As our effort expanded from Cambodia to Laos, so has our caring family of friends and
supporters. We are grateful to see our family grow across borders and look forward to
continuing our mission of treating every child as if our own.
I thank each of you for joining and accompanying us on this extraordinary journey.
Your continued trust and generosity will allow Friends Without A Border to save
thousands of children for many more years to come.
I am truly honored to be a member of this wonderful family.
Message from Kenro Izu
Kenro Izu
Founder and Honorary President
Over the past 20 years, Friends Without A Border (Friends) has worked tirelessly to
strengthen pediatric healthcare systems in the Mekong Region. Angkor Hospital for
Children has established itself as one of the leading hospitals in Cambodia, and we are
currently focused on expanding our geographic reach through our support of The Lake
Clinic and the opening of Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC).
Our first year of operations at LFHC has clearly demonstrated that, even twenty years
later, there is still a significant need in the region for Friends’ offering of high-quality
and compassionate care, medical education, and community outreach. The need for
our services is as great today as it was during the earliest days in Siem Reap. Families
are traveling up to eight hours to receive care at LFHC and children regularly arrive with
advanced and previously undiagnosed serious medical conditions. Over the coming
years, we plan to add more departments which will enable us to deepen the offerings of
medical services at LFHC and allow us to treat more complicated cases. We will expand
our community outreach programs and continue to implement partnerships with local
medical schools that provide pediatric training for the next generation of Lao doctors,
nurses and physician assistants.
The Mekong Region is in the midst of rapid political, economic and environmental
transitions. Planned hydropower projects on the Mekong River will adversely impact
its fisheries and contribute to decreased agriculture yields from surrounding land.
The marginalized populations that are most dependent on the Mekong River system
will become increasingly more vulnerable. Twenty years of experience, targeted goals
and an energetic, motivated team position Friends to be better prepared than ever to
improve the lives of the children we serve.
Looking Forward

Friends Without A Border is honored to present the fifth annual Healing Asia Award
to Pencils of Promise (PoP). The Healing Asia Award is Friends’ highest acknowledge-
ment, meant to commemorate organizations and individuals with a demonstrated
commitment and proven impact on the lives of children, families, and individuals across
Southeast Asia. Pencils of Promise, founded in 2008, has a goal of increasing access
to quality education for children in the developing world. PoP works with communities
to build schools, train teachers and create education programs for children in Laos,
as well as Ghana and Guatemala.
Pencils of Promise’s dedication to education
has resulted in improved educational
opportunities and learning structures in 73
communities in Laos. PoP’s first school was
built in Luang Prabang in 2009 and since
then, the organization has provided access
to education to more than 9,500 children
and delivered scholarships to nearly 1,500
students in Laos. Besides building schools, PoP has also implemented WASH, an
internationally recognized program designed to provide access to and knowledge
about Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. PoP delivers WASH programming and builds
bathrooms and handwashing stations to ensure school is a safe and clean environment.
PoP also uses filters to remove bacteria and other contaminants from water and teaches
students how to maintain healthy behaviors to keep them from missing school due to
preventable illness.
Friends Without A Border recognizes the important link of health and education
and is proud to present the Healing Asia Award to Pencils of Promise.

On February 11th, 2015, Friends Without A Border along with the community of
Laos gathered to celebrate the Grand Opening of Lao Friends Hospital for Children.
LFHC is the first full-service pediatric hospital in northern Laos. The hospital building
includes Outpatient and Inpatient Departments, Emergency Department, a
Laboratory, Pharmacy, Diagnostic Imaging Department, Lecture Rooms, and a
Library to teach pediatric medicine to the future leaders of the hospital.
Composed of 91% Lao staff, 9% international staff, and medical volunteers from
across the world, the LFHC team most commonly treats illnesses such as infectious
diseases, malnutrition, anemia, epilepsy, renal conditions (kidney disease), and injury.
75% of patients are under the age of 5 years old and often travel long distances from
neighboring provinces to receive the compassionate care available at LFHC.
LFHC’s impact extends far beyond the doors of the hospital. While more than 10,000
children were treated in the first year of opening, countless lives were saved through
the model of “Treatment + Education + Prevention.” The Outreach team travels into
rural or isolated villages in Luang Prabang Province, in order to provide community
education and preventative care, covering everything from basic sanitation and hand
washing, to children’s nutrition and recommended immunization. The community
education and prevention programs will have a long-lasting impact on future
generations in Laos and create a ripple effect of health and education.
HOSPITAL FOR CHILDRENLAO FRIENDS
Angkor Hospital for Children
Opened in 1999 with just an Outpatient Department, AHC has developed into an
internationally recognized pediatric teaching hospital. As the Cambodian staff contin-
ues to elevate the standard of pediatric care in Cambodia, the Outpatient Department
has gone from seeing 20,000 patients a year to 132,000 in 2015. AHC now provides
Outpatient, Inpatient, Emergency/Intensive Care, Cardiac and other surgical services,
Physiotherapy, Social Work, HIV, Dental, Eye, and Neonatal Care, in addition to
ancillary services including an on-site laboratory and a wide variety of medical
educational programs.
In 2005, AHC was officially recognized as one of Cambodia’s first teaching pediatric
hospital, and continues to be one of only a few such facilities today. In 2015 alone,
AHC provided more than 186,000 medical treatments to children and educated
more than 10,000 healthcare workers and others. Through the External Program
Department, AHC helps to train government healthcare workers in 38 hospitals
throughout Cambodia.
Given AHC’s robust success, a number of the hospital policies and procedures have
been adopted by the Cambodian Ministry of Health. AHC works together as a team
at a hospital, community, and national level to provide a sustainable and replicable
model of healthcare for Cambodia. AHC became independent in 2013. Friends is
happy to continue supporting AHC in their commitment to children’s health.
Friends for many many years
Kenro Izu has been both the inspiration and the catalyst for the creation of The Lake Clinic. Good ideas abound, but only through love and hard work can they be realized.—Jon Morgan
The Lake Clinic
Founded in 2007 by former Executive Director of AHC, Jon Morgan, The Lake Clinic
(TLC) provides medical care and health education to families living in remote and
isolated areas on the Tonle Sap Lake and its tributaries in Cambodia. TLC is the only
sustained hope of medical care for these families, as any other medical care centers
are over 70 miles away by boat. TLC has continued to grow and now includes 5 floating
clinics (in 5 of 9 villages) and a small “fleet” of boats providing transport and support
for two clinical teams. Each team, consisting of an all Cambodian staff, makes rounds
every single day, providing medicine and education, while creating strong bonds in
the local community.
Not only does TLC provide basic medical care to these communities, but the team
continues to find innovative approaches to improving the healthcare of Cambodia.
The boats often visit local schools to teach nutrition and health education to children,
who participate in a “bottle garden” project to learn about growing and preparing
nutritious food. TLC also promotes disease surveillance and proper medical referrals
to ensure high-quality and compassionate care to any child or family in need.
In 2015, nearly 2,000 immunizations were administered, 1,200 school children received
optometry exams, 7,000 families in the region were able to access life-saving medicine,
and 5,000 pediatric patients treated. The impact of the dedication and spirit of TLC
will ripple far beyond the tributaries of the Tonle Sap river. Friends is proud to support
the unwavering effort of The Lake Clinic.

Voices of Friends Without A Border
Keo Sysaythong, LFHC Nurse
“I wanted to join LFHC because I like to work with children and
I wanted to see them receive good quality care from nurses. I
like working with LFHC because everybody here works together:
nurses, doctors, housekeepers, and other staff. We all do our
responsibilities to help provide an international quality hospital
here in Laos.”
Dr. Dorkeo Bouaphao, LFHC Doctor
“LFHC is like my ‘dream hospital’ in Laos. When I was in Tanzania
the hospital where I worked provided free services for children
under 5, obstetrics, and patients with chronic diseases. I thought
about how good it would be to have a service like this in Laos, to
help poor people in this country, too. When I saw the FWAB
website and read about LFHC, I wanted to come work here.”
Mrs. Manila Prak, AHC Board of Directors
“I am very proud to be part of AHC and the FWAB family where
I have developed myself to be useful for my own society and
country. The more I have learned about nursing through my
experience and academic training, the more I realized that Kenro’s
principle of “Compassionate Care” is one of the most important
concepts in my profession. I am so happy this beautiful concept
has now expanded to Lao Friends Hospital for Children in Laos.”
Mr. Lam Lav, AHC Family Service Assistant
“When I was around 12 years old, I was admitted to AHC’s
Inpatient Department with meningitis. Despite being very ill, I
dreamed of one day joining AHC in whatever capacity I could.
After graduating from high school, I was hired as a family service
assistant at AHC. I consider myself lucky to help families during
their treatment process at AHC.”
Kazumi Akao, RN, LFHC Clinical Outreach Coordinator
“What was originally scheduled to be a 2 months stay at AHC
has now become a major part of my life. There have been many
challenges since joining FWAB in 1999, but we have achieved an
important goal handing AHC to local management, and we are
now working towards our next target. FWAB has allowed me to
love my work as a nurse more and more every day.”
Khamon Boakham, Chief of Ban Boakham, Phonxay District
“After seeing a mother lost 7 children, we sincerely appreciate the
support of LFHC to our village. We didn’t know what to do for
the family even though we wanted to help them. I’m happy to see
her daughter recover, and I hope we can work together to be
healthier and happier. Thank you very much!”
Theresa Strong, LFHC Volunteer Pediatrician,
Boston Children’s Hospital
“I worked at LFHC from January-June of 2015 and enjoyed the
experience so much that I came back in February-March of 2016.
I am so impressed by how far the hospital has come in a short
time. LFHC is truly raising the standard of care in Lao PDR- both
medically and in terms of compassion. I can’t wait to return as
volunteer next year.”
