THE DIVISION OF FINE ARTS AT YOUNG HARRIS COLLEGE OFFERS AN EXCITING LINEUP OF WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES, EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS PRESENTED BY THEATRE YOUNG HARRIS, THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC AND THE CAMPUS GATE ART GALLERY. THE 2021–2022 SEASON WILL SHOWCASE THE CREATIVE EFFORTS AND TALENTS OF YHC STUDENTS, YHC FACULTY AND DISTINGUISHED GUEST ARTISTS.

THEATRE YOUNG HARRISEach season, YHC’s theatre company presents a full lineup of notable productions, including full-length musicals, innovative dramas, classic plays, children’s shows and more.

The Mainstage Season features four marquee-style musicals and plays directed and designed by faculty, professional artists or advanced upperclassmen.

The Second Season includes exciting and innovative events like musical revues and cabarets, staged readings, one-act plays and special performances.

The Studio Series features productions showcasing student direction and provides an invaluable educational experience that focuses on the fundamentals of the production process.

CAMPUS GATE ART GALLERY

The gallery hosts exhibitions by nationally recognized professional artists, plus the annual Student Juried Art Exhibition and Spring Senior Thesis Art Exhibit. Each show has an opening reception where guests can meet and mingle with the exhibiting artist(s).

MUSIC ENSEMBLES

YHC Brass EnsembleDIRECTOR: DR. PATRICK YOUNGThis group draws upon centuries of brass ensemble music to present dynamic, rich and powerful selections.

YHC Chamber ChoirDIRECTOR: JEFFREY BAUMANThis dynamic ensemble’s extensive repertoire ranges from moving works by Renaissance masters to original arrangements of current pop hits.

YHC Community Band DIRECTOR: DR. PATRICK YOUNGComprised of high school and adult musicians from the local community, the Community Band performs traditional band classics, as well as entertaining pops music.

YHC Concert Band DIRECTOR: DR. PATRICK YOUNGThis powerful ensemble gives woodwind, brass and percussion players ample opportunities to perform a wide repertoire of wind band literature.

YHC Concert ChoirDIRECTOR: JEFFREY BAUMANThis large ensemble hosts a variety of themed concerts, often teaming up with fellow ensembles to present unforgettable concerts.

YHC Jazz Band DIRECTOR: ROLANDO FERNANDEZThis ensemble performs a variety of music covering many styles of the big band genre, including swing, bop, Latin jazz and fusion.

YHC Percussion EnsembleDIRECTOR: JUSTIN IADONISIThis group performs solo and ensemble pieces for percussive instruments like vibes, marimba, xylophone, timpani and more.

YHC Piano EnsembleDIRECTOR: CYNTHIA DEFOORComprised of music students with a focus on piano, this group performs Baroque to modern piano repertoire and more.

9/25 The Great Alphabet AdventureFred Register Endowment for Children’s Theatre The Great Alphabet Adventure gives a fresh and energetic look into the power of reading. On a rainy afternoon with no electricity, Alex comes home from school to find that his only entertainment option is to read. Enter Zora, the new girl next door who is determined to go on an adventure. Zora discovers that Alex’s old picture book, The Great Alphabet Adventure, is mysteriously blank. The new friends decide to embark on an adventure to retrieve the missing letters. Alex, Zora, and the audience are lead on a treasure hunt through the alphabet where they learn about the fun of reading and about the value of friendship.

9/23-10/21IDEAS>DESIGNS>PRODUCT by Danger Press Designers and ArtistsWe are excited to host artists and designers from Atlanta’s Danger Press. There will be a live printing event at the opening reception on Thursday, September 23, alongside their exhibition foregrounding the printing process on a variety of surfaces across diverse industries. The exhibit will also include personal work and client-based work from these creatives.

10/26 YHC Concert Band The Young Harris College Concert Band gives woodwind, brass and percussion players ample opportunities to perform a wide repertory of wind band literature ranging from traditional to contemporary.

10/12 Faculty Artist Recital: Young and SehmannDr. Patrick Young, tuba and Dr. Andrew Sehmann, horn present a joint recital program featuring a variety of different composers and styles. Collaborative pianist, Ms. Suzanne West, ‘85, will join them for this fun and exciting recital! Some featured composers include Wilhelm, Wilder, Marcello, and Myaskovsky.

11/30 YHC Percussion EnsembleComprised of talented students currently studying percussion instruments, the YHC Percussion Ensemble will perform a variety of exciting and moving solo and ensemble pieces.

11/10-13Ordinary DaysOrdinary Days tells the story of four young New Yorkers whose lives intersect as they search for fulfillment, happiness, love, and cabs. Through a score of vibrant and memorable songs, their experiences ring startlingly true to life. Ordinary Days is an original musical for anyone who’s ever struggled to appreciate the simple things in a complex place. With equal doses of humor and poignancy, it celebrates how 8.3 million individual stories combine in unexpected ways to make New York City such a unique and extraordinary home.

11/9 YHC Jazz BandThe YHC Jazz Band is instrumented like the great classic big bands: saxes, trombones, trumpets and a rhythm section of keyboards, drums, bass and guitar. They play traditional jazz: blues, swing, bop, Latin and also the greatest contemporary rock, pop, funk and just about anything else in between.

1/20-2/24Temi Coker.Temi Coker is a multidisciplinary artist from Dallas, TX. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Temi is widely known for his creative approach to photography and design. His goal is to help people tell and share their stories through different digital mediums. Temi was one of the seven Adobe Creative Residents for the 2018/2019 year and has since worked for Apple, Adobe, Facebook, HBO, Google, Twitter, and more.

1/14YHC Concert BandConcert Band is a premiere symphonic ensemble comprised of the finest woodwind, brass and percussion players from across the region and U.S. The Concert Band is open by audition to any YHC student instrumentalist who plays a band instrument.

2/14Valentine’s Day Cabaret FundraiserYHC’s Alpha Psi Omega Theatre Honor Society presents the annual Valentine’s Day Cabaret to benefit student trips within the Department of Theatre. Talented students will perform a variety of short musical and dramatic bits related to the themes of love and heartbreak.

2/10Faculty Artist Recital: Dr. Richard Knepp, guitarDr. Richard Knepp will present a faculty recital featuring an evening of Romantic music from the classical guitar repertoire. The program will also include guest performances with YHC alumni and other members of the music faculty.

2/24-26Little Women the MusicalLittle Women follows the adventures of sisters Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication, so she begins telling the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America. Little Women embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled with laughter, tears, and a lifting of the spirit. The powerful score soars with the sounds of personal discovery, heartache, and hope – the sounds of a young America finding its voice.

3/17-4/1Student Juried Art Exhibition The highly anticipated Student Juried Art Exhibition is open to all YHC students and will showcase talent across many artistic mediums. Prizes will be awarded to the students during the opening reception.

3/3Spring Choral ConcertThe Spring Choral Concert promises a beautiful show presented by YHC’s Concert and Chamber Choirs. The program will showcase a variety of musical pieces under the direction of Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music Jeff Bauman.

3/29YHC Piano Ensemble Under the direction of Instructor of Music Cynthia DeFoor, the YHC Piano Ensemble will perform a concert of piano duets and trios on one piano. Pieces composed for piano duo requiring two pianos and two to six performers will also be featured.

4/20-23 The WolvesThe Wolves follows a girls indoor soccer team. From the safety of their suburban stretch circle, the team navigates big questions and wages tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. A portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals. “The scary, exhilarating brightness of raw adolescence emanates from every scene of this uncannily assured first play by Sarah DeLappe.” – The New York Times.

4/7-5/5Spring Senior Thesis Art ExhibitionThis exhibition represents a culmination of artwork created by senior art and graphic design majors. This gifted group of artists and designers will showcase a diverse body of work, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics, video, and design.

4/9 AcapaloozaThis a cappella choir concert features music ranging from the classics of choral repertoire and cutting-edge new composers to students’ own original arrangements of current popular music. The female and male groups within YHC’s Concert Choir join forces to present an audience favorite that’s not to be missed.

4/19Pops on the Plaza The community is invited to gather with lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy YHC’s annual outdoor concert featuring crowd-favorite selections—from Broadway musical and movie scores to beloved pop songs to traditional band favorites.
