2021 CSA Summer Anesthesia Conference

Welcome from the chair

Leave your shoes at the door and join your colleagues on the beach! On behalf of the California Society of Anesthesiologists (CSA) Education Programs Division, it is my pleasure to invite you to join us at the Four Seasons Ko’olina on the beautiful island of Oahu on July 19 to July 24 for the CSA 2021 Summer Anesthesia Conference. Make sure to bring your swimsuit, sunscreen, and sunglasses for an educational Hawaiian excursion.

CSA’s mission is to sparkinnovation and professional collaboration through education. We set out to emphasize the most positive aspects of CSA education—reflection on the ever-growing complexity of our patients, emphasis on interdisciplinary learning and delivering collaborative care with a multidisciplinary scientific approach. Our program will not only provide the tools needed to deliver high-quality patient care but will also address how to shape anesthesia care for the future.

Our program has been developed in response to educational priorities expressed by prior CSA meeting attendees. As you can see, we are fortunate to host world class speakers discussing the management of patients with acute and chronic pain, caring for elderly patients, navigating echocardiography, and creating and setting of vision for your practice groups. The program will also host Problem-Based Learning Discussions focusing

on case-based and practical take-home points. This will be an opportunity to have audience participation and an exchange of ideas on tackling the ever-growing patient complexity in our perioperative environment that is challenged by financial and time constraints.

The program is balanced between pharmacology, pain management, obstetric anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, regional anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, and cardiac anesthesia. In addition to the wide variety of clinical topics, there are specialized topics focused on the development of an anesthesiologist as an individual as well as a professional. We will be talking about resiliency, developing leadership skills, and building a successful career.

The conference is the perfect balance of education and leisure time. The sessions are held in the mornings leaving the afternoons free for exploration or lounging on the beach. The meeting

will be held at Four Seasons Oahu, one of the best world-renowned resorts on Oahu. The resort provides easy access to excellent beach and ocean activities, world-renowned golf courses, and exciting shopping, dining, and entertainment. Oahu Island is filled with wonders: experience the scenery by helicopter flight, ziplining or take a drive towards the North shore and experience the movie sets and Dole plantation! July weather typically ranges from 75 to 80°F, perfect for exploring the beautiful tropical surroundings. If you are bringing the kiddos, we are conveniently located right next to Disney’s Aulani as well! Please plan to join us for what we believe will be an excellent intellectual and educational experience combined with Hawaiian fun in the sun with lots of entertainment.

I look forward to seeing you all in Ko’Olina Oahu.

Shalini Shah, M.D.

MISSION STATEMENT OF THE CSA EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS DIVISIONThe CSA Educational Programs Division is to provide high quality opportunities, enabling physicians and other allied health care professionals to maintain, develop, and increase knowledge, skills, performance, and relationships neces-sary for continuing to improve patient safety and medical care. Providing continuing medical education (CME) is one of the major ways in which the CSA is committed to promoting the highest standards of the profession of anes-thesiology. “Continuing medical education for the needs of an evolving specialty” is the mission statement that guides the Winter Conference Program Committee.

TARGET AUDIENCEThis program is designed to enhance and maintain the knowledge of practicing physician anesthesiologists, anes-thesiologist assistants, nurse anesthetists, physician assis-tants, anesthesiology residents and students, and other health care professionals in the practice of anesthesiology.

TYPES OF ACTIVITIESEducational activities feature multiple teaching methods, including lectures, case presentations/studies, and ques-tion and answer sessions.

2021 CSA Summer Anesthesia Conference

Our new CSA 2021 Summer Anesthesia Conference is a comprehensive program designed to enhance the continuing medical education experience of physician anesthesiologists, fellows, residents and other healthcare providers. Topics provide updates on the latest clinical information in anesthesiology and its subspecialties, including, but not limited to pain medicine, regional anesthesia, perioperative care, obstetric anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia and critical care.

STATEMENT OF EDUCATIONAL NEED Anesthesiology is a dynamic specialty with significant changes expected on a number of fronts in the years to come, including new clinical technologies and prac-tices, regulatory changes, business process changes, and overall changes in the health care environment. In addition to covering the latest clinical information, this program seeks to prepare participants for emerging and anticipated changes in the practice of anesthesiology.
