11SATURDAYGame DayNM State at UNM

5 p.m. Stadium

WHOLE LOT OF HISTORY The Rio Grande Rivalry or the Battle of I-25 is one of the oldest rivalries in college football. Dating back to 1894, NM State and UNM have met 110 times and the rivalry is actually 18 years older than the State of New Mexico (1912). The Aggies are looking to snap a two-game losing streak against the Lobos.

ANOTHER LOOKThe Lobo defensive scheme Saturday should look pretty familiar to the Aggies, as DC Rocky Long has a very strong influence on San Diego State’s defensive strategy. After spending a decade as the man in charge of the Lobo program (1998-08), Long spent a season as SDSU’s defensive coordinator before spending a decade at the helm of the SDSU program (2009-19). The Aggies faced Long’s defensive scheme last weekend at SDSU.

CLUB 70Both NM State DC Frank Spaziani and UNM DC Rocky Long are at least 70 years of age. Spaziani (74) boasts 47 years of experience while Long (71) just completed his 46th season as a coach. Both Long (SDSU) and Spaziani (Boston College) spent a decade as a head coach and the duo boasts 93 years of combined experience.

RESTRICTED AIR SPACE: The Aggies pass defense was extremely stout Saturday against SDSU. The unit held the Aztecs to just 6-of-19 passing for just 76 yards. After being hit for a pair of 50-yard passes in the opener against UTEP, the Aggie defense allowed just two completed passes of 20+ yards, and no passes over 25 yards. NM State also recorded its third interception of the season Saturday when Caleb Mills picked-off a Brookshire pass in the third quarter. The 76 yards passing are the fewest the Aggies have allowed in a game (min. 15 attempts) since App State recorded just 75 yards passing during the 2017 season (Oct. 7).

INJURY UPDATEWR Dominic Gicinto broke his arm during the second quarter of Saturday’s contest against San Diego State. The Missouri transfer had a strong game in the first half before his injury on Saturday, hauling in seven passes for 64 yards and a score. Gicinto recorded the Aggies lone touchdown of the season thus far, an eight-yard strike from Jonah Johnson in the second half.

COMING UP THE MOUNTAIN Saturday’s contest at San Diego State was the first of seven contests the Aggies will play against the Mountain West this season. On Saturday, NM State will make the short trip to New Mexico (Sept. 11). The 2021 schedule also features a home-and-home with Hawaii (Sept. 25, Oct. 23), road contests

at San Jose State (Oct. 2) and Nevada (Oct. 9) as well as a home game with Utah State (Nov. 6).

STATE OF THE UNION Sophomore corner Torren Union continues to impress for the Aggies. The nephew of movie star Gabrielle Union and former NBA superstar Dwyane Wade, Union transferred to the Aggies from South Dakota State. In his first-career start against UTEP, the Arizona native had six tackles and a pass breakup. On Saturday, Union had three tackles, a pass breakup and recorded a fumble recovery.

SWITCHING IT UP: The Aggies two-deep this week features a couple of changes. Carson Pharris will make the start for the Aggies at right guard, while Stephawn Townsend is projected to make the start at right tackle. WR Cole Harrity will slide into the projected starter role at the ‘H’ position, replacing the injured Gicinto. True Freshman PJ Johnson makes his 2021 two-deep debut at the aforementioned ‘H’ spot.

RIVALRIES RENEWED After not facing off with either New Mexico or UTEP during the COVID-19 impacted 2020-21 season, the Lobos and Miners return to the Aggies schedule in 2021. UNM and NM State didn’t meet in football for the first time since 1945, while the Aggies and Miners didn’t face off for just the third time since 1945, when World War II necessitated the cancellation of that season. NM State will hit I-25 on Sept. 11 for the matchup against UNM.

OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN(S) The 2021 NM State football team has selected Trevor Brohard, Sage Doxtater, Alex Escobar and Donavan King as 2021 captains. Escobar was also put on full scholarship prior to the Aggies opener against UTEP.

NEW YEAR, NEW AGGIESNM State welcomed 40 newcomers to LasCruces this summer. In total, 14 differentnewcomers cracked the opening weektwo-deep, paced by Dom Gicinto and EliJohnson.

“EITHER OR” The Aggies first two-deep of the season featured five “or” as the competition of fall camps extended to game week. The most notable “or” on the NM State depth chart is at the quarterback position where junior Jonah Johnson and redshirt freshman Weston Eget continue to battle for the starting spot. Johnson has started both of the Aggies games thus far.

A transfer from Fresno City College, Johnson started and appeared in both of the Aggies spring contests. Named a 2020 Top-11 Impact JUCO Transfer QB by Athlon Sports, Johnson completed 36-of-60 passes in the spring for 358 yards and a touchdown. Also

an adept runner, Johnson ran for 64 net yards and a pair of scores. The Aggies other option to start at quarterback, Eget, made his collegiate debut in the spring finale against Dixie State. The Santa Clarita native was electric in his debut, completing six-of-eight passes for 61 yards and a score. Eget also rushed for 26 yards including a 21-yard scamper. Eget made his 2021 debut in the 4th quarter against UTEP.

The Aggies other three battles during camp included the right-guard position (Isaiah Mursalat/Carson Pharris), the running back position (O’Maury Samuels/Juwaun Price), and the strong safety position (Devlin Kirklin/Dalton Bowles). Mursalat earned the start at right guard for the Aggies the last two weeks, while Bowels and Samuels also“won” their respective battles.

STEELE LIKES THE AGGIES Led by redshirt senior Sage Doxtater, the Aggies placed five members of the 2021 Phil Steele Preseason All-Independent team. Doxtater was joined on the first team by running back/return man Juwaun Price, while Eli Johnson, O’Maury Samuels and Trevor Brohard round out the Aggies five selections.

SAGE ADVICE Redshirt senior Sage Doxtater declined an opportunity to return to his native Canada and play for the Candian Football League, and will instead return for his fifth season in Las Cruces. A projected Day Three selection in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft, Doxtater was selected by the Toronto Argonauts in the second round of this years CFL Draft. The Ontario native rounded out his busy offseason by getting married back in June.

BACK TO NORMAL? After seeing its entire 2020 slate canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Aggies played just two spring games against Tarleton and Dixie State at the Sun Bowl in El Paso. The Aggies 12 game 2021 schedule includes seven road games (San Diego State, UNM, San Jose State, Nevada, Hawai’i, Alabama and Kentucky). Starting with Saturday’s Battle of I-10, the Aggies will welcome South Carolina State, Hawai’i, Utah State and UMass to Las Cruces this fall.

NOTABLES: LAST GAME (SDSU) • QB Jonah Johnson threw for a career-best 326 yards Saturday night. He became

the first Aggie QB to throw for 300+ yards since Josh Adkins threw for 316 against UIW during the 2019 season (Nov. 16). His 326 yards are the most since Adkins threw for 335 against UNM during that same 2019 season (Sept. 21).

•Chris Ojoh continued to impress in his first year as an Aggie on Saturday. The linebacker had five total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack. The sack was the first by an Aggie this season and the first of his NM State career.

• Safety Caleb Mills recorded his first career interception Saturday. A converted wide receiver Mills picked off Jordan Brookshire in the third quarter.

• On special teams the Aggies forced a turnover Saturday when Michael Bowe recovered a muffed punt. It’s the first time the Aggies forced a turnover on special teams since Nov. 17, 2018 when Javahn Fergurson recovered a fumble against BYU. BEHIND ENEMY LINES (NEW MEXICO):New Mexico opened its 2021 season with its first home game in 642 days, a 27-17 victory over FCS foe Houston Baptist.

The Lobos got off to a strong start as Kentucky transfer Terry Wilson led the Lobos two a pair of touchdowns on their first two possessions of the night. Wilson threw three touchdowns on the night, completing 20-of-26 passes for 174 yards. A true dual-threat, Wilson also added 49 net rushing yards including a scamper of 56 yards.

True freshman Keyonta Lanier burst onto the scenes for the Lobos catching a 47-yard bomb from Wilson with 2:40 left to go in the opening half. In total, Lanier caught three passes for 72 yards and the score.

The Lobos defense stole the show Thursday night, as the unit held HBU to just 2.7 yards per play, and 187 yards of total offense. On the ground, the Huskies recorded a net total of -9 rushing yards, as the UNM defense recorded five sacks (by five different players), 10 tackles for loss and a pair of interceptions.

With the victory, the Lobos have now won three games in-a-row for the first time since the end of the 2016 season (two games) and the start of the 2017 season. The win in the penultimate game of the 2020 season snapped a 14-game losing streak for UNM.

The Lobos have continuity in the program for the first time in a while, as HC Danny Gonzales, OC Derek Warehime and DC Rocky Long all return for their second consecutive season with the Lobos. It marks the first time since the 2017 season that UNM has returned its HC, OC and DC. AGGIE ADDITIONS HC Doug Martin made four staff additions in the offseason. Kevin Maurice joined the Aggies staff back in April and oversees the inside wide receivers/tight ends. Maurice spent the last three seasons at Eastern Washington where he served as the Eagles running back coach.

In addition to Maurice, the Aggies and Martin added three new graduate assistants for the 2021 season: Torrey Gill, Eric Osborne and Quinn Thomas.

Gill will work with the NM State offense working primarily with the Aggies wide outs and joined the Aggies after a successful two-year stint at Tabor College. Gill played at Tabor College, where he was a two-time all-conference selection and served as a grad assistant at Tabor.

The third Aggie addition, Osborne, joined the Aggies after spending the last two seasons working at Eastern New Mexico University where he worked with both the defensive line and linebacker. At NM State, Osborne will serve one of two Aggies defensive graduate assistants, and will work primarily with the Aggies linebacker unit.

NM State’s fourth and final addition is former Walsh College wide receiver Quinn Thomas. Thomas also served as an offensive graduate assistant for the Cavaliers. At NM State, Thomas will serve as the Aggies second defensive GA, and will work with the defensive backs.

AGGIE ALUMS Matt Christian, Chase Holbrook and Oliver Soukup enter the 2021 season working for their alma matters.

Serving as the Aggies assistant head coach and linebackers coach, Soukup was a four-year letterwinner on the Aggies defensive line and was named to the 2000 Big West All-Conference team. A former Aggies team captain, Soukup enters his seventh season in 2021.

staff, Christian, enters his sixth season as a full-time assistant in 2021. The former Aggie signal-caller serves as the running backs coach, academic coordinator and the co-special teams coordinator. Christian threw for over 3,500 yards in his NM State career and tallied 30 touchdowns.

One of the best quarterbacks in Aggie history, Holbrook enters his fifth season as a member of the NM State coaching staff. The Aggies all-time leader in total offense (11,577), touchdowns thrown (85) and passing yards (11,846), Holbrook serves as the NM State quarterbacks coach.

CRACK OPEN A COLD ONENew Mexico State is one of only 16 collegiate institutions in the United States to have an officially licensed beer.

Pistol Pete’s 1888, a collaboration between NM State and Bosque Brewing Co., was released throughout the state of New Mexico in the fall of 2017 before the canned version was released in August 2018. The beer is available for purchase inside Aggie Memorial Stadium.

A brilliant pale straw-colored ale with a light malt sweetness and just enough late addition hops to add flavor and aromatic nuance, Pistol Pete’s 1888 received a bronze medal at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival (GABF). It was recognized in the Golden or Blonde Ale beer-style category.

Bosque is headquartered in Albuquerque, N.M., with two locations in addition to its newest addition in the Bernalillo area. The brewery also has locations in Las Cruces.

Doug Martin is entering his ninth season at the helm of the NM State football program in 2021. Martin was officially announced as the Aggies’ 34th head football coach on Feb. 1, 2013, after the departure of former head coach DeWayne Walker to the NFL. Martin was no stranger to the NM State program as he was the Aggie offensive coordinator under Walker in 2011.

In 2017, Martin etched his name into Aggie lore when he guided the Aggies to their first bowl game in 57 years and then captured the 2017 NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl Championship in front of 25,000-plus Aggie fans at Arizona Stadium on Friday, 12/29/17. The season was capped off with a storybook ending as Larry Rose III rushed in the winning touchdown in overtime for the 26-20 victory over Utah State – the last opponent NM State defeated in 1960 when it last appeared in a bowl game. Rose III was named the offensive MVP while Leon McQuaker took home defensive MVP honors. Rose III’s game-winning touchdown also saw him tie James “Preacher” Pilot for the most rushing touchdowns in program history with 37. At season’s end, the team finished the regular-season 7-6 and 4-4 against Sun Belt opponents. These victories included a sweep over NM State’s rivals UTEP and New Mexico for the first time since 2002. The win in 2017 over UNM was the second win in as many years. The Aggies’ head coach helped guide the offense to average 453.8 total yards of offense per game, including a Sun Belt-best 352.6 passing yardage. Martin led quarterback Tyler Rodgers to a conference-leading 3,825 yards with 26 touchdown passes. Wide receiver Jaleel Scott also posted a standout season as the senior led the team with eight touchdowns and 1,042 total yards. For his efforts Scott received an invitation to the Senior Bowl, a first for an Aggie since 1978.

The strong season led Scott to being selected in the fourth round (132 overall) by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2018 NFL Draft. Scott, a First Team All-Conference selection in the Sun Belt, became the first Aggie chosen in the draft since the Jacksonville Jaguars took Jeremy Harris in the seventh round in 2013. The wideout was the highest Aggie taken in the draft since Davon House was selected in the fourth round, pick 131, by the Green Bay Packers in 2011.

NM State finished 2016 with a record of 3-9 for the second straight year, including a 32-31 rivalry win in the second game of the season against New Mexico. In conference play, the Aggies collected a 37-31 home win against Louisiana and cruised by Texas State, 50-10, at home.

Martin coached seven players that earned All-Sun Belt postseason honors, which was the most by NM State since joining the SBC in 2013. Linebacker Rodney Butler was named first-team all-conference after leading the country in tackles with 165. Butler, who concluded his career

fourth in school history in tackles with 378, was named a Phil Steele All-American at the end of the season. Butler became the third Aggie to lead the country in tackles for a single season.

Martin helped lead the Aggies to an average of 414.7 yards of total offense per game, including 244.92 through the air. Martin guided quarterback Tyler Rogers to a strong campaign with 16 touchdown passes and 2,603 passing yards. Meanwhile, the Aggie backfield, led by Larry Rose III, averaged 169.8 yards per game on the ground. Rose III paced the ground attack with 935 yards on the season.

The Aggies concluded the 2015 season with a 3-9 record, which is the best record for the program since 2011. In conference play, NM State defeated Idaho 55-48, Texas State 31-21 and UL-Lafayette 37-34 to collect three victories in a row. This was also the first time the team won three in a row since 2004. As the offensive coordinator, Martin guided sophomore Larry Rose III as he broke the NM State single-season rushing record in just 10 games. Overall, Rose III had 1,651 rushing yards to finish the year ranked No. 6 all-time in the conference. For his accomplishments, Rose III earned Associated Press All-American Third Team honors and was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year. Overall, the Aggies won five conference Player of the Week awards. Rose III won back-to-back honors, while Andrew Allen and Parker Davidson both won after leading the team to victory against UL-Lafayette. Jaden Wright was named Defensive Player of the Week at the beginning of the season. NM State went 2-10 for the second year in a row in 2014. During Martin’s second year, the Aggies began the season 2-0 for the first time since 1999. After topping Cal Poly in a 28-10 victory, NM State defeated Georgia State, 34-31, in its first Sun Belt Conference game. The Aggies also faced I-10 rival UTEP, Rio Grande rival New Mexico and No. 17 LSU in 2014. Under Martin’s tutelage, Allen became the first freshman to rush for over 100 yards against LSU since 2011. Later in the season, Rose III rushed for 229 yards against UL-Monroe to become the first NM State player to rush for over 200 yards since 2003 when Eric Higgins ran for 218 yards. This feat ranked Rose III as No. 7 all-time for single game performances. With Martin guiding him, Rose III amassed 1,102 yards over the season to become the first 1,000 yard rusher since Kenny Turner in 2011. This was also the first time a freshman rushed for over 1,000 yards since Denvis Manns in 1995. As a team, the Aggies averaged 420.9 yards of total offense per game after amassing 2,252 rushing yards and 2,899 receiving yards through 12 games. Defensively, NM State had two players amass triple-digit tackling on the season as Rodney Butler racked up 119 tackles and Derek Ibekwe

accumulated 102 tackles. In addition, 21 student-athletes garnered double-digit tackles on the season. In all, the defense had 1,028 tackles, fivesacks, 11 interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries.

NM State went 2-10 in 2013 during Martin’s first season as head coach after playing one of the toughest schedules in the school’s history. The Aggies faced five teams that had participated in a bowl game the previous season while also playing two teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation. NM State kicked off the 2013 season with a trip to Austin, Texas, to face the 15th-ranked Texas Longhorns and also made a trip to Los Angeles during the season to play No. 13 UCLA. The Aggies’ home schedule included games versus Minnesota, which was the first school out of the Big Ten to play at Aggie Memorial Stadium, and Boston College, which was the first school out of the Atlantic Coast Conference to make a trip to Las Cruces. The Aggies averaged 20.9 points per game and 382.2 yards per game in 2013, including 141.8 yards per game on the ground and 240.5 yards per game through the air. The team had a season-high 224 yards rushing against Abilene Christian on Oct. 26 and a season-high 380 yards passing and receiving versus Boston College on Nov. 9. Martin’s influence and system began to take shape during the final five games of the season as NM State went 2-3 in those games and had fourth-quarter chances for a win in two of the three losses. Martin would start making an impact on the squad as soon as he accepted the head coaching position. Before the season began, the Aggies had four players placed on six different preseason watch lists, the most for any NM State football team in the school’s history. NM State also had 12 players honored on the College Sports Madness Independent Preseason All-Conference team and 11 players on the Phil Steele College Football Preview All-Independent team. During the season, senior safety Davis Cazares was nominated as a Bulsworth Trophy finalist, honoring the most outstanding collegiate football player who began his career as a walk-on. Linebacker Clint Barnard would be named to the Capital One Academic All-District VII first team. The Aggies would also pick up three FBS Independent Player of the Week nods in 2013 under Martin, Cazares and Barnard on the defensive side and punter Cayle Chapman-Brown on special teams. At the conclusion of the 2013 season, NM State would place five players on the All-Independent Football team including Cazares, Trashaun Nixon, Austin Franklin, Andy Cunningham and Davonte Wallace. In 2012, Martin left his offensive coordinator position at NM State to take the same position for Boston College out of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Eagles ranked 47th in the nation in passing offense, as Martin guided wide receiver Alex Amidon and offensive tackle Emmett Cleary to All-ACC honors. As the offensive coordinator for the Aggies in 2011, Martin helped NM State rank 47th in the country in total offense and 26th in passing offense. He helped guide the Aggies to a win over Minnesota, the program’s first win against a team from the Big Ten. With seven seasons under his belt as the head coach at Kent State University and eight as the offensive coordinator, Martin was instrumental in building a true football program at the university. A total of 20 Golden Flashes earned All-Mid-American Conference accolades from 2007-10, including Eugene Jarvis, who was atop the active Football Bowl Subdivision running backs list with 3,722 career yards on the ground, and Brian Lainhart, whose 17 career interceptions was also tops among active FBS players. In 2010, Roosevelt Nix was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year under Martin’s watch. Also with Martin’s help, four players were selected in the NFL draft including Jameson Konz (2010 - 7th round, Seattle Seahawks), Usama Young (2007 - 3rd round, New Orleans Saints), Jack Williams (2008 - 4th round, Denver Broncos) and Julian Edelman (2009 - 7th round, New England Patriots). Martin is widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier quarterback mentors. His

list of protégés includes three-time All-Conference USA selection and current NFL passer David Garrard, record-setting CFL quarterback Marcus Crandell and other pros Richard Alston and Joshua Cribbs, who both played quarterback in college under Martin before switching positions in the NFL. In Martin’s first season, the Golden Flashes posted a 5-6 overall record, winning their final four games for the program’s longest winning streak since 1976. The team also finished in fourth place in the MAC East Division with a 4-4 mark while producing three All-MAC players and two honorable mention All-Americans. Martin was named the school’s 19th head coach on March 1, 2004, replacing Dean Pees. Martin joined the Kent State staff in January 2003 as offensive coordinator. After just one year on the staff, Martin made an instant impact on the Golden Flashes’ offense. In its first season under Martin’s system, Kent State averaged 26.8 points per game, the second-highest in the previous 30 years for the program. Martin arrived at Kent State following 11 seasons at East Carolina University, the last seven of which he was in charge of the team’s offense. He was at ECU for all of Steve Logan’s tenure there, serving as the tight ends coach and special team’s coordinator for two seasons (1992-93), then another two years as wide receivers coach (1994-95) before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 1996. Prior to joining the staff at East Carolina, Martin was a graduate assistant at the University of Kentucky, his alma mater, from 1986-87 and then spent the 1988-91 seasons at East Tennessee State University. Martin was a four-year letterwinner at Kentucky from 1981-84. A native of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Martin earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Kentucky in 1985. Martin and his wife Vicki have a daughter, Molly, and two sons, Cory and Bobby. Cory is on staff as a wide receivers coach.
