DANTE 700 | WEBINARThe Metamorphoses of Dante’s UlyssesProf. Lino Pertile | Harvard University

Ulysses personifies the fundamental moral issue of the use and abuse of human intelligence: Are we allowed to pursue any intellectual quest regardless of its consequences? Should we resist the temptation to let our intelligence run freely without any moral restraint? In the Divine Comedy, Ulysses becomes a tragic hero. His example, more relevant today than ever, re-occurs as both a stimulus to search endlessly and a warning not to trespass the limit beyond which human intelligence brings its own downfall.

Presented by the Embassy of Italy and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Washington DC in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Toronto.

DANTE 700 | BOOK PRESENTATIONThe Enemy in Italian Renaissance Epic. From Dante to TassoIn conversation with author Andrea Moudarres | UCLAThe book explores enmity within the self, the state, and the world through the prism of prominent works of the Italian literary canon, including Dante’s Divina Commedia, amongst others. The book’s central argument is that early modern Italian literature conceived of all forms of hostility—even those conventionally considered external, such as the conflicts between Christian and Islamic forces in the Middle Ages and Renaissance—as predominantly internal. Organized by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Los Angeles in collaboration with the UCLA Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington DC.

RENAISSANCE READERS AND THEIR BOOKS: REPRESENTATIONS OF A FUGITIVE ACT Antonio Ricci | Associate Professor | York UniveristyThe image of a person holding a book appears frequently in Renaissance art and literature. The privileged status of texts in humanist culture and their proliferation after the coming of print technology contributed to the motif’s popularity. This lecture will examine depictions of readers in paintings and poems of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, aiming to recover aspects of the experience of reading during the period and, at the same time, to gain a measure of insight into what remains an elusive phenomenon.

Presented by the Canadian Institute for Mediterranean Studies in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto. Funded by Joe Di Geso, co-sponsored by the Toronto and Ottawa Chapters, with the support of the College of the Humanities, Carleton University.

SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR 1921: FROM ROME TO NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKEOne-hundred years ago, Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author was presented at the Teatro Valle in Rome on May 9, 1921. This version was staged in 2000 and 2001 at the Shaw Festival with considerable success. Almost all the other stagings of this play are based on a new version of the original text that Pirandello penned in 1923 and in 1925, making fundamental changes, additions and significant cuts to the original text. The director of the Shaw production, Tadeusz Bradecki, and its translator, theatre scholar Domenico Pietropaolo, will analyze and comment on the staging with Donato Santeramo who will bring an analysis of the changes made by Pirandello to the original text. Presented by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto.

All courses will be taught by our regular instructors. Although the classes will be offered virtually, students will continue to participate actively in those same activities offered in an on-site classroom: speaking, writing, listening, working in groups, etc.
