FlexFacs is the innovative, brand-new online training and educational resource for OMFS STs launched by the BAOMS. We encourage all OMFS trainees, trainers and training programme directors
to engage with FlexFacs.
The programme will deliver monthly live lectures, with content mapped to the OMFS curriculum. These lectures will then be made available for access online permanently. Over a three-year period,
the lectures will cover the syllabus. Additionally, how to do it videos will be added to FlexFacs. Quizzes and games based around the recorded lectures will be made available also.
There are plans to make ‘virtual reality’ surgery content available for trainees along with an indexed repository of webinar lectures on the FlexFacs website.
Michael Nugent, Montey Garg and Robert Bentley
Please also see Pop up podium presentation on Sunday 10 October
ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING SHEFFIELD 2021 6Final Programme
The concept and theme of the main meeting is “OMFS: How to do it: A Workshop Manual”. The emphasis is on pictorial, graphical and /or video step wise exposition of surgical technique.
On Friday the 8th October at the INOX we have workshops covering Nasendoscopy technique, practical use of Ultrasound and associated procedures, and a detailed Implant planning intensive workshop offering an opportunity to hone skills - and learn new ones – with practical hands on tuition. Many thanks to the workshop organisers for the time to prepare and present.
There will also be a moderated discussion ‘Troubleshooting: How to manage Osteonecrosis’ with Evidence based latest developments and treatment options with the current opinion by Professors Richard Shaw and Jagtar Dhanda to help us with an issue that affects all practices across the UK and is a real headache to deal with.
The BAOMS AGM, standard business and your vital input to some key decisions about the future of the Association will follow and there will be chance to sample Sheffield’s highlights, eateries and nightlife on the Friday night. The scientific sessions on Saturday and Sunday are at the Diamond Building, Sheffield University.
These are intended as a refresher and to update knowledge following the hiatus due to CoVid, which saw our routine operating, decimated in many areas.
The competitive Pop-Up Podium presentations on good ideas, top tips and improved ways of working – “A Better Way to…” have been drawn from over 60 submitted papers and we will have given the originators the chance to impress the ‘Dragon’s Den’ of public opinion and the ASM audience in a 3 minute pop up podium pitch. These are on Sunday.
Winners will be announced later this year for the BAOMS Members’ Prizes for 2021 and receive their award at next year’s ASM. The sessions for competitors will be spread across the ASM Programme.
The Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony is on Saturday 9 October at Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield City Centre. Entertainment provided by the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band of “Brassed Off ” feature film fame. Their style, presentation and virtuosity is NOT that of your ordinary band. There will also be late dancing to varied music until close around midnight or so.
Proceedings and presentations will be recorded for post event viewing and live streamed from Lecture Theatre 1 to the remote participants who have registered. Saturday at the Diamond also sees the OMFS Nurses’ Day programme with tailored scientific content and we are pleased to welcome a parallel conference of the Institute of Maxillofacial Prosthetics Technologists (IMPT) Study Day. Their Chair Mr Jason Watson will be the President’s Invited Lecturer on Sunday.
Given the BAOMS declared commitment to eradicate unfairness and unacceptable traits, the highlight Norman Rowe Invitational Lecture will be delivered by Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, who galvanised the surgical world to mend its attitude and record. She will speak on maintaining fairness and equity in the surgical workforce in Lecture Theatre 1 plenary on the Saturday afternoon, which will be live streamed. Last but not least I would like to thank our sponsors who are joining us both onsite at the Diamond and via their ‘virtual’ online booths. Please take time to visit and talk with them and also visit their online booths via the meeting platform afterwards.
Welcome to Sheffield !

1900-Midnight ANNUAL GALA DINNER AND AWARDS CEREMONY Cutlers’ Hall, City Centre, Sheffield See following page.
R
CUTLERS’ HALL, ANNUAL DINNER VENUE The Cutlers’ Hall was built in 1832 by Samuel Worth and Benjamin Broomhead Taylor. It is Sheffield’s third Cutlers’ Hall, the previous buildings, which were built in the same location. The Hall’s front is of the Corinthian order. Towards the end of the 18th century it was used as an overspill court room as the Town Hall across Church Street could not cope with the increasing number of crimes.
There is a selection of old Hallamshire knives on show inside the hall, some of which go back to the Elizabethan era. Many of the knives were discovered by Thames mudlarks in the tidal mud of the River Thames in London. Also is the Norfolk Knife, a very large pocket knife with 75 blades which was made by Joseph Rodgers and Sons at their Norfolk Street Works in Sheffield for the Crystal Palace Great Exhibition of 1851.

“Thanks... the end”
At the end of the agreed term, a range of solutions are available. For example,
the fleet could be upgraded to the latest generation of power systems, or a reduced payment plan could be adopted, based on the age and value of the power systems.
Any power system deemed beyond functional or economical repair is
immediately replaced at no additional cost.
Service reports are issued after each engineer visit.
AESCULAP® POWER SYSTEMS MANAGED EQUIPMENT SERVICEThe Aesculap Power Systems Managed Equipment Service allows you to convert to ELAN 4 without any capital outlay. The required systems are installed at the outset and maintained on an ongoing basis throughout their lifecycle.
For a fixed monthly fee, Aesculap Power Systems are installed and then maintained
for the duration of the agreement.
Certified training is included throughout the agreement, ensuring all stakeholders
are competent at adopting the new system.
An onsite service visit is conducted every six months. The condition of the power system is inspected and repairs carried out to ensure the power system is fully
functional.
