Our Mission

• Work together professionally, with honesty, integrity and a spirit of co-operation

• Perform concerts during the year within a practical schedule

• Choose popular symphonic music that inspires players and audiences alike

• Promote and maintain the GSO as a fine Australian symphonic ensemble

• Ensure sound management and fiscal strength in order to underpin the GSO's future

• Attain the highest standards of musicianship and enjoy the rewards of acknowledgement from audiences and from each other

Our Vision The Geelong Symphony Orchestra aims to be a professional and essential entity in the musical life of Geelong. Presenting a yearly concert series of accessible yet diverse repertoire, this collective of musicians hopes to open the door to the Geelong community – to play music, share music, enjoy music and experience the amazing sound of a live symphony orchestra.

It is very important to this organisation to provide Geelong’s musicians with the opportunity to play in an orchestra at a level that fulfils their musical ambitions and enables them to advance their skills through the challenges of complex repertoire. Every concert gives opportunities of playing with top class soloists and principal musicians and working under the guidance of some of Australia’s most renowned and experienced conductors.

Our History

The orchestra was established in the latter half of 2015 with an initial City of Greater Geelong Arts Project grant of $6,000 – the plan was to involve mainly local professional and semi-professional musicians and present two concerts in March and September of 2016. The quality orchestra was to be called the Geelong Philharmonic Orchestra but this was later changed to the Geelong Symphony Orchestra.

The orchestra was originally set-up with a working party of three musicians with their combined skills including artistic planning and liaison, event management, music library management, marketing, financial management and arts management. A larger and experienced working committee was planned to manage the project – run on a voluntary basis and responsible for all planning, booking of venues, sourcing outstanding conductors and soloists, sourcing and managing musical scores and parts, artistic programming, event management, marketing and promotion.

In 2016, the first concert was successfully presented in Deakin’s Costa Hall in March – the orchestra has since delivered fourteen outstanding concerts and is now recognized as a new force in the Australian Classical music scene.

OUR PEOPLE

Patron - Professor Iain Martin – Vice Chancellor, Deakin University Waterfront Campus Geelong Deakin University has always maintained a strong association with the arts community of Geelong and the GSO is an important cultural institution for the region and for Victoria. In my relatively new status as a local resident, I really enjoy attending GSO concerts. The orchestra is known for its clever programming and high standard of performance, so it is no wonder this orchestra attracts world class soloists to present repertoire that is both challenging and exhilarating for players and audience alike.

SECTION 2 GOVERNANCE

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Wendy Galloway OAM

The Geelong Symphony Orchestra’s last AGM was held on March 18th 2021.

This was after a scheduled 3 months delay in the timing of the AGM due to the

restrictions caused by the pandemic. However, the mood was optimistic, we felt

that Covid 19 was behind us and we would confidently mount the two well

planned and attractive concerts we had advertised and ready to go. Alas - it

was not to be. We reluctantly agreed that we had no choice but to cancel

Vienna City of Dreams and reschedule that program for March 5th 2022. We

were still very hopeful that Pastorale would proceed as planned in October, but again, we were forced

to cancel the concert and reschedule that program for May 7th 2022.

On the positive side, our first concert Mozart was successful on every level. There were protocols

in place due to the ever-present Covid virus, but our conductor Richard Davis led the orchestra

through successful and uplifting performances of the Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, the Flute

Concerto in D K314 and the magnificent Jupiter Symphony. Flautist Derek Jones was an

accomplished soloist and the audience responded with enthusiasm that showed appreciation of

the quality of this concert after months of silence in concert halls around Australia and the world.

We have maintained good relationships with our conductors, soloists and players and we fervently

hope that 2022 will see a triumphant return of the GSO to Costa Hall with fine performances. We

aim to continue to build our reputation as one of Australia’s finest regional orchestras presenting

programs of high quality with appeal to an ever-growing audience. We have also maintained good

relationships with the team at the Geelong Arts Centre and with Deakin University. GAC has been

particularly helpful in the cancellation and rescheduling of concerts and with refunds or rolling over

of tickets for the revised dates.

Our Friends and audience members have been informed of changes via the website and Facebook

page and all understand that we are subject to conditions beyond our control. Sponsors and grant

givers have also been understanding and willing to hold over money until it can be used

productively.

The Board and committee structure that we have set in place is working well. Unfortunately, most

of the activity has been in cancelling rehearsals and concerts. Everyone has contributed to the

smooth running of the orchestra whether it has been in setting up concerts, or notifying

cancellations. GSO players received some exposure and accolades through performances at the

Geelong Gallery for the very successful Rone Exhibition. A group of 10 players collaborated with

the composer, Nick Batterham, to present 2 live performances of the music that had been

commissioned for the Exhibition.

GSO was also working to present a program at the Deakin Alumni Night in October this year.

There had been discussion and planning, but unfortunately, the event needed to be presented

online and the GSO was not able to take part. Deakin generously contributed 10% of the fee to

compensate for the preparation that had already been done.

____________________________________________________________________________________ Annual Report 2021 GSO 14

A big thank you to Suzanne Moodie our Librarian. It was a mammoth task to source all the diverse

pieces of music needed for the Vienna program. Suzanne then sorted them all and placed them in

folders and they were distributed. This was a big undertaking. The good news was that the music

hirers have agreed to allow us to hold over the scores and parts for the new date in 2022. Most of

the folders have been returned and will be redistributed in good time for the first rehearsal in 2022.

This has saved hours of further work. We already have the scores and parts for Pastorale, but

these were not distributed and are safely held at present by Suzanne

David Fox, our Vice President and media expert deserves special thanks for his creative art work

in the promotion of our coming concerts. Enticing posters and flyers were designed and produced,

and then we find that the concerts are to be cancelled. David also ensures that the web site is

appealing and up to date. However, from now on, we hope that the concerts can be actively

promoted by all our management, players and Friends and the concerts will be presented as we

plan and expect.

Secretary Marian and Treasurer Peter are always thoughtful, available and efficient and without

them the GSO would struggle to survive.

In November 2021, we can only look forward to a return to playing and enjoying live concerts and

communicating with each other and with our audiences. Without live performances of inspiring

music, the world is a poorer place. We need the beauty, and harmony of the arts to give meaning

and enrichment to our lives. My wish is that the Geelong Symphony Orchestra will continue to do

this for years into the future.

OUR OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives

The GSO aims to perform three main concerts plus select smaller performances throughout the year in Geelong. The main concerts provide a performance of live classical music in Geelong in Deakin’s Costa Hall by the Geelong Symphony Orchestra featuring esteemed international conductors and soloists in collaboration with local professional and semi-professional musicians. The concerts showcase the calibre of local musicians while providing opportunities for professional development. Program - Beethoven - Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 “Pastoral” Ralph Vaughan Williams – The Lark Ascending

RONE Exhibition in Geelong Gallery - Concerts - March 27th & 28th Geelong-born artist Rone has built an exceptional reputation for large-scale wall painting and immersive installations that explore concepts of beauty and decay. Rone’s site-specific installation transformed a room within the Geelong Gallery in response to architecture and history of the building. Musician and composer Nick Batterham has developed a suite of three pieces of classical music for the soundtrack to RONE in Geelong. In response to Rone’s exhibition concept of the abandoned function room with

its two opposing ends of light and dark, the music features two separate ensembles that play off each other in a musical conversation of layered reflections and repetitions. At the dark end of the room is piano, augmented by wind and brass, while at the light endplays a string quartet. Members of the Geelong Symphony Orchestra performed a selection of musical arrangements specially composed and written exclusively for the exhibition. A pleasing collaboration with the Geelong Gallery and a highly successful event in the Geelong arts calendar.

Impact and Challenges of COVID-19 Pandemic

The GSO successfully presented Mozart on February 27th 2020 – within weeks the impact of the developing COVID-19 Pandemic was gathering momentum here in Australia. As the year unfolded with Victorian lockdowns and public health restrictions, there was no option but to cancel the August and the October concerts planned for 2020. In 2021, there was an opportunity to present a concert in February but with the extra challenges of ever changing public health rules and restrictions, limited venue capacities, lockdowns and state border closures. The Board had to produce and implement a GSO COVID Safety Plan to manage rehearsals safely and worked closely with the Geelong Arts Centre to present the concert within the regulations. The audience capacity of Costa Hall was limited to 330 (usually 1,400) and originally it was expected to make a substantial loss on ticket sales – fortunately the capacity was increased the day before the concert and there was a small profit. The original soloist was to be Sydney flautist Joshua Batty – the risk of a state border closure meant that Melbourne flautist Derek Jones was engaged at the last moment. The GSO organisers had to be resourceful, flexible and resilient, dealing with any issues or last-minute changes as necessary. Two further concerts were planned for 2021 – rehearsals were about to begin for the August concert when strict travel restrictions, lockdowns, limited capacity and the introduction of the COVID-19 vaccination program necessitated the postponement of the two concerts until 2022.
