About VEDA Vedic Education and Development Academy (VEDA) is a public benefit non-profit charity organization. VEDA was started in August
2007 to fulfill the needs of the community, to celebrate festivals and rituals following the agamic tradition. With enthusiastic
support from the community, Sri Venkateswara Temple was started in October 2009. We purchased our own facility in 2018 – while
it is a significant milestone in just 10 years, we have exciting plans ahead, to make it an iconic temple with authentic rituals.
Temples have always been pivotal institutions in protecting and preserving the great values of our ancient heritage and VEDA
Temple recognizes this big role and has not only been catering to the religious needs of the community but also has provided
great fillip and inspiration for the continuity and development of our cultural, social and educational values in the area.
2020 Year at a glance Although the pandemic has brought many things to a standstill, in less than two years after the move to our permanent location,
our moola moorthies have arrived, as planned. This is a milestone moment for VEDA Temple. Our Venkateswara is the largest in
USA and is just short of the moola moorty at Tirumala Tirupati. Exquisitely sculpted Padmavati and Aandal along with a 5’ tall
Shiva Lingam in sitting from (Square avudai) and Parvati are here as well.
We managed to serve the community while pivoting to online puja services and remote priest services. With your support, we have
conducted all major events with full pomp and splendor, incorporating COVID guidelines. Upakarma, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navaratri,
Deepavali (with fireworks), Rathotsavam (first time for VEDA), Ayyappa Mandala Puja and Dhanur Masa Seva are examples of the
resiliency and resolve of our community. VEDA thanks the selfless service by volunteers & priests in making the events a success.
Looking Forward to 2021
Our goal for the new year is to have the Prathista of the deities at the earliest. While we wait for the pandemic situation to ease a
little, we hope the Prathista of the deities heralds a new phase for VEDA in becoming an iconic temple in the area. Watch for
exciting announcements in the coming months for the Prathista dates and associated activities.
VEDA Temple sincerely appreciates the patronage from many generous donors who have been instrumental for the growth of the
temple since inception. Their donations have had profound influence in making VEDA Temple the nucleus of religious and cultural
activities in the community and has etched the temple’s name in the community. Please continue to donate generously.
The current goals of the temple envision greater commitment to cater to the supportive society that has helped us grow over these
years. And we require your sustained financial support to realize these goals. The temple has set up various endowments to make
sure a stable and secure commitment for uninterrupted services. Making an endowment to a temple has been considered an act
of religious merit. We request that you sign up for an endowment scheme that you connect with.
Donation Information VEDA is a non-profit organization certified by IRS under section 501(c)(3). VEDA is eligible for matching funds from many
companies including AT&T, Microsoft and Boeing. VEDA accepts:
➢ Cash, check, credit cards and in-kind donations.
➢ Exchange-traded stocks and bonds.
Donations to VEDA are deductible on your itemized tax return to the full extent allowable by law. You can donate online at

Thai Poosam Lord Subramanya received the “Vel” (lance) from His mother, Parvathi on Thai Poosam. Subramanya used the lance to vanquish the
demon Surapadma. The festival is marked by Kavadi to Lord Subramanya, by carrying various offerings on one’s shoulder. The types of
Kavadi typically carried are milk, rose water and flowers. It is also common to offer pots of milk, honey & tender coconut water. Celebrate
with kavadi & palkudam at VEDA: www.vedatemple.org/thaipoosam.
VEDA offers Karya Siddhi Vajravel Prarthana, with Subrahmanya Trishati archana to the Vel, every Tuesday. Many devotees have had
their wishes granted and problems solved with this prarthana. Register at www.vedatemple.org/vajravel.

Pradosha Abhishekam & Its Origin
The evening of the thirteenth day of the moon is Pradosha when Shiva is worshipped with an abhishekam of many
dravyas, during the evening hours, around sunset time.
By performing an abhishekam one cleanses himself of all impurities. The deity is nitya-shuddha, ever pure and does
not require a bath. It is for the sake of the worshipper that the abhisheka is performed. This Agamic ritual is a
powerful ritual to cool down and remove the sufferings of the worshipper. Pradosha abhishekam yields the four fold
objectives if life – righteousness, wealth, pleasures and liberation.
As the Devas and Asuras churned the milky ocean, on an Ekadasi day, Vasuki, the serpent, out of fatigue, spit out
the terrible poison, Halahala. To rescue them, Lord Shiva drank the poison and advised them to churn further. When
the poison was out of their way, the Devas and Asuras resumed churning and obtained 14 gems and finally, the
Amrutha (nectar) of the twelfth day of the moon, Dwadasi. Having got the nectar, ecstatically they danced and forgot
to thank Shiva who had paved way for the nectar, by drinking the poison. The next day, on Trayodashi, the Devas
begged Shiva for forgiveness and thanked Him. Shiva forgave them and performed Ananda Tandava in joy, between
the bulls of his vahana, Nandhi. This was believed to have occurred at Pradosha Kaala. It is believed that Shiva fulfils
the desires of all devotees who pray during Pradosha Kaala and grants mukthi.
Rudrabhisheka is performed in full fervor at VEDA, every Pradosham day. Annual sponsorships available. To

Bhagavathi Seva VEDA Temple takes pride in being one of the very few temples in the US to conduct Bhagavathi
Seva, a Devi worship ritual as mentioned in Tantra. The ritual requires the priest to have special
initiation for the conduct of this pooja. While even in India, not many priests are proficient with
this know-how, VEDA Temple is proud to have Shri. Girish Sharma initiated in this powerful Devi
worship.
Bhagavathi Sevai is both a “Prayaschitta” (performed for “dosha-nivritti” or for relief from several
“doshas”) and “Paushtika” (performed for any intended welfare) pooja, performed at the “Sandhya
Kalam” or at twilight. A special “Padmam” (the seat for Devi) is drawn by the initiated priest and
with a few lit lamps, the priest, through Tantra Shastra, destroys his karmic body and reaches the
subtle elements to invoke Devi in himself. The body of the priest becomes the body of Devi. He
raises the Devi across all the chakras and seats Her in the Sahasrara Padmam and then transfers
the Devi to the Padmam that he has drawn. The Devi in the Padmam is worshipped with all
Upachara Poojas, using a certain combination of fragrant flowers (Shipped from India), Veda
Mantras, Lalitha Sahasranamam, Devi Mahatmyam and Lalita Trishathi. This pleases Devi and She
showers the divine nectar from the Sahasrara Padmam and this nectar is sprinkled on all the
devotees. This creates a divine aura around the place and is a sight to behold. The priest then takes
back the Devi into himself and lets Her melt into his body.

Panchanga Shravanam on Yugadi & Tamil New Year
At the beginning of the new year, it has been a time-honored tradition to listen to a
priest reading the Panchanga (Almanac/Calendar). This is called Panchanga
Shravanam. The five limbs of the Panchanga are Thithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Yoga &
Karana. A glimpse of the likely events in the year, helps us to prepare for the year
ahead of us. Panchanga Shravana removes the ill-effects of bad dreams, confers merits
of Ganga Snanam, Go-Dana, increases lifespan and begets good natured children.

Navaratri Devi is worshipped for a period of 9 days with a Kumkuma Archana of Lalitha
Sahasranama, a hymn that is so special to the Devi, composed by the Vag Devis
at Her behest. A special feature of this festival is the worship of Suvasinis
(married women) and Kanyas (young girls from 2-10 years of age) by offering
clothes and other Mangala Vastus. Suvasini and Kanya Pooja removes the ill
effects of curses of in the family and gives long life and peace to the performer.

Swarna Pushpa Archana
This is one of the signature events at VEDA Temple, where 108
golden lotuses are offered to Goddess Lakshmi. Goddess
Mahalakshmi gets pleased with the lotus offering and
bestows devotees with immeasurable wealth. This auspicious
puja has its roots from Tirumala Tirupati where the Swarna
ashtadhala puja is performed to Lord Venkateswara. To
request Swarna Pushpa Archana seva, please register at :

Srinivasa Kalyanam
Kalyana Utsavams or the marriage ceremonies of various Gods are performed at our temple for our
welfare – Yoga-Kshemam. Yoga refers to obtaining what we do not have and kshemam refers to retaining
what we have. Both these are within our reach if Kalyana Utsavams are performed to the Lord.
Based on the advice by Brhaspati, Srinivasa Kalyanam was performed on Vaishakha Masa Shukla
Dashami (when Uthra Phalguni was the ruling star) on a Friday.
It is considered a divine gift to assume the role of the “kanyadatas” or parents of Lord Srinivasa and
Goddess Padmavathi, the divine parents of the world and perform their marriage. This is recognized as
the most auspicious service rendered to the Lord.
In the Vimanarchana Kalpam, Sage Marichi details the fruits of conducting Lord Srinivasa’s Kalyanam.
Those who serve Srinivasa with Sridevi and Bhudevi during the Kalyana Utsavam will be purged of their
sins instantly. Besides, their ancestors and progeny for ten generations (both maternal and paternal)
will be cleansed of their sins. The women thrive with long life of their husbands. At the end they all
attain the sacred world of Vishnu.
VEDA conducts Srinivasa Kalyanam every month to bring this opportunity to all devotees to sponsor
and partake in the blessings of Lord Venkateswara. To register: www.vedatemple.org/kalyanam

THERE ARE DIFFERENCES
ABOUT JYESTHA ABHISHEKAM, MOST AGREE ON JYESTHA
MASA AND JYESTHA
NAKSHATRA, WHERE AS SOME
ALSO TAKE PURNIMA TITHI
FOR JYESTHA ABHISHEKAM.
Importance of Amavasya Tarpanam Amavasya is the day when the sun and the moon are together. A month in the BhooLoka (15 days of Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha)
is a day in Pitru Loka. When we offer tarpanam to deceased ancestors, once a month, on Amavasya, it amounts to offering food every
day to them. Offering Tarpanam on Amavasya has a special significance. A day amounts to 60 ghatikas. Our 30-day period amounts to
60 ghatikas (1 day) for the Pitrus. Hence, our day is 2 ghatikas for them (48 minutes). If Shukla Prathama (the day just after Amavasya)
is the beginning of daytime for the Pitrus, the Amavasya Tarpanam had happened just 48 minutes prior to their daybreak at 5:12 am
(assuming a 6 am sunrise for them), which happens to be Brahma Muhurtha for them. An offering of sesame seeds and water at such
an auspicious time confers great merits for us and our progeny. Register at www.vedatemple.org/tarpanam for the whole year!

Krishna Jayanthi, Janmashtami & Sri Jayanthi
Although Janmashtami and Sri Jayanthi are festivals that celebrate the birth of Krishna, they are termed
differently and may occur on two different days. Krishna was born at midnight on Shravana Bahula
(Krishna Paksha) Ashtami with Rohini Nakshatra when it was also the Simha month (solar calendar).
It is rare to get the same combination of solar and lunar month along with the thithi and nakshatra.
When Shravana Ashtami comes in Simha month, then Janmashtami and Sri Jayanthi are celebrated close
to each other.
Upakarma
Shravana nakshatra in Shravana masa is observed as Rg Upakarma while Shravana Poornima is observed as Yajur Upakarma. VEDA
provides upakarma services with homam and full fervor. Register at www.vedatemple.org/upakarma
Upakarma is to be performed in the late morning hours. As part of Upakarma, Khandarishi Tarpanam is performed to honor 9 rishis
who were Veda mantra dhrshtas. Although this is called Tarpanam, there is no stipulation to avoid heavy dinner (as in case of Pitru
Tarpanam) since the occasion occurs on Poornima for Yajur Vedhis, it is advised to avoid a heavy dinner and a light “Palaharam” is
recommended on Upakarma. Such light meal also serves to prepare the body as “poorvanga” for the next day’s Gayatri Japam.
Bhadrapada Hastha Nakshatra is observed as Sama Veda Upakarma
Gayatri Japam
The day after Shravana Poornima is celebrated Gayatri Japam day.
Gayatri Homam is performed by all men (who belong to Rg, Yajur &
Sama Veda) who had completed the Upakarma, the day before.
Those unable to perform Homam alone chant Gayantri mantra 1008
times. Gayatri Homam relieves one of the lies that has been said for
a year (so says Dharma Sutram). It is advised to perform this
Japam/Homam on an empty stomach. VEDA does homam every
year with all samagiri specially procured from India

Mahalaya Paksha
Mahalaya Paksha is a period of 15 days when all our Pitrus (deceased ancestors) come together to our houses and accept our offering of Shraddha to them. Performing Mahalaya Shraddha assures
gift of children, long, healthy and wealthy life to their lineage. Our Puranas shows that there are many merit-based possibilities of life after death. The best souls, on account of their deeds when
living, attain mukti (no birth), the second best go to swarga (heaven) with all comforts, stay for some time after which they take another birth.
Others reach the pitru loka, which has a series of worlds within it offering varied comforts, experiences and treatments. These differences
arise due to the fact of not just commissions of bad karma but also due to omissions of good karma. Unlike those in swarga, pitrus in this
loka, receive food and water only through the shraddha that their descendants perform in the earth. Our Pitrus have expectations from us and
we have obligations towards them.
Mahalaya Shraddha is hence, not optional but mandatory.
A few days are considered auspicious to perform shraddha, although
they can be performed on other suitable days (please consult our
priests for suitable days). These are Maha Bharani (Mahalaya
Shraddha on this day confers the merit of Gaya Shraddha),
Madhyashtami and Gajacchaya.

Shankhabhishekam & Its Origin Chandra, the Moon God, married Daksha Prajapati’s 27 daughters (Stars) but had shown favoritism
only to Rohini, which angered the others. Daksha cursed Chandra that his glow would wane. Chandra
prayed to Shiva, who took pity on him and engulfed Chandra in his matted hair. Chandra poured forth
his “Amritha Dhaara” on Shiva. Shiva was extremely pleased at this abhishekam of the cool waters of
Chandra and promised that Chandra would gain his glow back every 15 days. Water poured in a
shankha or the conch is supposed to be cool, like the showers of Chandra. Shaastraas vouch for the
fact that such a Shankhabhisheka cools Shiva and pleases Him. www.vedatemple.org/sankalpam.

appears in full splendor and the fresh harvested rice is cooked and offered as an abhishekam to Shiva. Food that we eat is due to the
extreme grace of the Lord and provides not just nourishment to the body but also promotes health mind.
A darshan of annabhishekam assures food for all beings. Each grain of rice is considered a Linga and this darshan becomes Koti Linga
Darshan. Participating in the conduct of annabhishekam gives prosperity in this world and releases one from the cycles of birth and
death. Sponsor and take the blessings of Lord Shiva at www.vedatemple.org/annabishekam

INDIA NAKARA CHATURDASHI
IS CELEBRATED AS DIWALI. SOME SECTS ALSO BELELIVE
TULA MASA AMAVASYA.

MAHESHWARA VRATAM, PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE.
DUE TO LUNAR ECLIPSE
KARTHIKAI DEEPOTSAVAM IS
CELEBRATED ON NOVEMBER
19TH.
Skanda Shashti The period from Asvayuja Amavasya to Shashti
is celebrated as Skanda Shashti. In some cases
if Shashti thithi starts before the sunsets of
Panchami thithi, then Skanda Shashti is
celebrated on Panchami.
Subramanya takes birth as the son of Shiva and
Parvathi to kill the asura Soorapadma. The
battle lasts for six days and on the last day,
Subramanya pierces Soorapadma with his lance.
The asura turns into a mango tree. Subramanya
cuts the tree into two pieces. One piece gets
transformed into a peacock and becomes the
vahana (vehicle) of Subramanya and the other
piece becomes a cock on his flag. A visual
enactment of this divine act of
“Soorasamharam”, is a signature event of VEDA
Temple, forms the highlight of the 6th day.

Deepavali and Fireworks Deepavali is celebrated on Krishna Paksha Chathurdashi in the Aswayuja
(Aippasi) month. It is believed that Lakshmi resides in sesame oil and Ganga
resides in waters of all rivers in the early morning hours (before sunrise
before the moon sets) of Chathurdashi and “Abhyanga Snana” (oil bath,
called “Ganga Snana”) at that time saves one from entering Yama Loka.
Our Shastras dictate us to hold the fire called “Ulka” (refers to the torch
carrying fire – sparklers or fireworks) in our hands on Deepavali and on the
next day, Amavasya. Pitrus who had come home during the Mahalaya
Paksha, having received their food from their children are on their way to
Swarga Loka and are guided in this journey by the light of the “Ulka”. This
is called Ulka Danam and is supposed to be lit in the Pradosha Kala of
Deepavali and Amavasya. VEDA provides fireworks on both days.
In the evening hours of Deepavali, lighting lamps in a Shiva or Vishnu
temple removes the fear of naraka. Another important aspect of Deepavali
(which faded away in some parts of India) is the lighting of lamps outside
the houses for three days starting from the day before Deepavali, on the day
of Deepavali and the next day.
Celebrate Deepavali at VEDA : www.vedatemple.org/deepavali
Karthikai Deepam Karthikai Deepam is celebrated on Purnima in the month of Karthika. This day is celebrated by lighting
many lamps both at home and at the temple, to enable worms, insects, birds, trees, animals and all living
beings witness the radiance of the lamps and help attain moksha. Kartika Purana states that the one who
lights and witnesses the lighting of lamps at the temple gets rid of the “shadripu” or the six enemies and
gets unlimited prosperity, wealth and moksha. Just as the wick in the oil lamps burns itself in the process
of giving light, the festival serves as a reminder for us to sacrifice our interests in the welfare of others
and eventually attain liberation. Of all danas, Deepa-Dana (lamp donation) in the month of Karthika is
unique and removes Apaamrityubhaya or Akalamrityubhaya.
Please consider donation towards lamps at the temple: www.vedatemple.org/deepam

PRADOSHAM
Dhanur Masa Seva
The month of Dhanurmasa is very auspicious to
Vishnu. This is the last month before the onset
of Uttarayana.
This month is the Usha Kala (Brahma
Muhurtha) of Devas. Lord Vishnu awakens from
Yoganidra on the first day of this month. Our
temple rituals for the entire month, begins with
the sacred Tiruppalliyezhuchi and Andal’s
Tiruppavai. Worshipping Vishnu at the temple
for a single day during this month yields the
merits of worshipping Him with devotion for
1000 years and attain Vishnu Loka.
Lord Shiva is also worshipped at the temple
with the chanting of Manikkavasagar’s
Tiruvempavai to invoke His blessings during the
thirty days of Margazhi.

Support our Sponsors ! Ayyappa Mandala Pooja Ayyappa Mandala Pooja begins in the month of Karthika and continues up to Makara Sankranthi. Devotees, upon initiation, undertake a
fast for a period of 48 days, as an attempt to maintain external and internal purity. On Makara Sankranthi, the devotees prepare “Irumudi
Kettu” or two bags, one of which contains offerings of coconut, ghee etc. for Lord Ayyappa and the other that contains personal belongings
for the devotee’s sustenance during his “yatra” to Sabarimala. This bag that contains his belongings represent the “Papams” and
“Punyams”, that he has accrued from countless births. As he exhausts the contents of these bags, he is believed to have exhausted all his
karma. The other bag is offered to Lord Ayyappa and is supposed to assure the merge of the devotee with Lord Ayyappa.

CALENDAR EXPLANATION महाऋषि वषिष्ठ॥ यषममन ्पके्ष यत्र काले येन दृग्गषितैक्यम।् दृश्यते तेन पके्षि कुयााषिथ्याषिषनिायम॥्
Biggest misconception is “Indian Hindu festivals observance date in the Indian calendar / panchang is applicable for all location in world”. We use our favorite Panchangam from India to find an observance date for an Indian festival. Observance dates from Indian Panchangam is valid only in India and is not transferrable to other locations. Another misconception arises due to the time zones/differences is as USA/Canada and Europe is behind in time then Festival will come a day later in USA/Canada and Europe. This is incorrect. If Seattle/Vancouver/California is 13 hours 30 minutes behind Indian Standard Time and say an event is happening in India at 8 AM then will it be the previous day in USA/Canada. You’ll subtract 13 hours 30 minutes from 8 AM. Which gives 6 hours 30 PM the previous day in USA/Canada Pacific Time Zone. Tithis, Nakshatras, Yoga and Karana are such events, as they end at the same instance all over the world. After calculating tithi and nakshatra endtimes per local timezone, the rules used to determine festivals. The local factors like like Sunrise, Sunset, Moonrise, and Moonset are used along with Tithi to determine festivals. Hence, sometimes festivals may appear on the same day as India or a day before in the countries west of India. The countries east of India the festival may appear on the same date as India or a day later. Hindu day changes at the sunrise (not midnight), a Hindu day (Vaar) is from one sunrise to another. The Hindu date or tithi doesn't change at the midnight, and it is not always fixed 24 hours long it can be
anything between 19 to 26 hours. Each 12 degrees distance between the Sun and the Moon is Tithi. Panchangam
contains two types of calculations: Local coordinates like longitude and latitude: Sunrise, Sunset, Moonrise, Moonset depends on this set. The Geocentric astronomical positions for the Sun and
the Moon. The tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana are based on this set of calculations. This astronomical
phenomenon happens instantly at the same moment on the earth everywhere, and hence thithis, nakshatra will
begin and end at the same time / instance all over the world and we must convert them to our standard time. Indian panchang makers convert this ending times to Indian time. Likewise, we need to covert it to our time zone for America/Canada or other country for that matter. For example: October 17th 2008 the Ashwayuja (Ashwin) Krishna Paksha / Poornimant Kartik Krishna paksha tithi Tritiya ends at 16:39:21 Indian Standard Time, and chturthi starts. That means at 16:39 hours there is tritiya still prevailing in India. Now on October 17th 2008 in Seattle, WA at the 16:39 hours we won't have tritiya at that time. We already have chaturthi started because Planets keep on moving. 13 hours have passed and the position of sun and moon have changed. So what time Tritiya will end in Seattle? The time difference is 13 hours 30 minutes (with one our day light saving time it gives the difference of 12 hours 30 minutes from IST). So, let's subtract 12 hours 30 minutes from the 16:39:21. That gives us 04:09:21 AM on October 17th. So on October 17th after that time we'll have chaturthi tithi and before we have tritiya. The same way if tithi ends at 8:39 AM on Sept 12 in India it will end at 20:09 PM on Sept 11th in Seattle. The same way Western Australia is 8 hours ahead of GMT and hence the chaturthi will end there at 12:09 PM on Sept 12th. The arth keeps moving. It doesn't wait for tithi or festivals to arrive in your timezone. The sun doesn't rise instantly at the same time all over the world Hence we need to convert the panchanga times to local standard time. After knowing tithi ending times, it's a time to decide festival dates for each region.
How festivals are determined? The sankathara chaturthi the chaturthi tithi must be prevailing during the moonrise time. Sankathara Chaturthi/Karwa Chauth is celebrated when Chaturthi prevails during moon rise time Moonrise in New Delhi on a given date is at 19:36 and in West Bengal, Kolkatta is at 19:25 PM. Now tritiya ends at 19:32 PM IST. So Kolkatta will celebrate karwa chauth/sankathara chaturthi on the Tomm where as people in New Delhi will celebrate on the same day.
Timings in this calendar are end timings of the Tithi and Nakshatra and for Sun/Moon entering time when it enters a new rashi. If the hour number is greater than 12 it means PM. When the hour number is greater than 23 then it ends on the next English date before sunrise, that means subtract 24 hours from hour to get exact time and take next English date. For example, tithi Amavasya ends at 26:36 on 19th March 2015 it means it ends at 2:36 AM on 20th March.
Uttarayana/Dakshinayana: The season occur based on earth’s position around the Sun. This is due to Earth’s tilt of 23.45 degrees. The Earth orbits around Sun with this tilt. When the tilt is facing the Sun, we get summer and when the tilt is away from the Sun we get winter. This tilt it creates a phenomenon like the Sun travels north and south of the equator. The Uttarayana (Winter Solstice) is the Sun appearing to move north. The Dakshinayana (Summer Solstice) is the Sun appearing to move towards South. This causes seasons, equinoxes and solstices. There is a common misconception that Makara Samkranti is the Uttarayana. This is because at one point in time Sayana and Nirayana Zodiac
were same. Every year equinoxes slides by 50 seconds due to precision of equinoxes, giving birth to Ayanamsha and causing Makara Samkranti to slide further. If you think Makara Samkranti is uttarayana then as it is sliding it will come in June after 9000 years. All Drigganitha Panchanga makers like mypanchang, Rastriya Panchang, Janmabhumi Panchang, will use the position of the tropical Sun to determine Uttarayana and Dakshinayana. Hence January 14th isn’t Uttarayana. Actual Uttarayana occurs on December 21st/22nd of every year. The same for Rutu. Rutus are always observed based on Tropical position of Sun.
