Welcome to Vimy Ridge Academy
We are the Vimy Ridge Raiders. Our student-athletes have advantages in international post-secondary schools. Our teachers and coaches turn young passion into superior performance on the field, on the court, on the ice, on the stage and in life. Students at Vimy Ridge Academy are dedicated to the pursuit of
excellence. Their stories merge both with the legends of the past and
with those of the future. They create their own stories by engaging in
the unique opportunity to hone skills in academics, athletics, performing
arts, citizenship and leadership. They come from all backgrounds and
from all over the region to join forces with more than 1,000 student
athletes who are on a personal journey to a successful future.
Students in Grades 7 to 12 choose programs in sports, dance or outdoor
pursuits. They can also create a flexible schedule in the Elite Athlete
program to accommodate training in swimming, diving, gymnastics,
figure skating, wrestling, martial arts or alpine skiing just to name a few.

We’re committed to making your transition to Vimy Ridge Academy as smooth as possible. The most important step is choosing a school that best suits your needs and goals. Visit open houses, attend information sessions and read through print material such as this guide. If you are satisfied that Vimy Ridge is the right school for you, welcome!
The next step is to keep working hard, plan your academic program carefully and
learn more about our school so that you feel ready and eager to attend in August.
Our staff and students are here to support you and make you feel welcome.
Here are a few things we do to help you prepare for your new school experience:
• Shadow Day—learn first hand what it means to be a VRA student
• annual open house
• information packages sent home over the summer
• orientation day for all new students
• Week of Welcome pep rally
Pre-enrol in SchoolZoneSign in to SchoolZone between March 9 and April 15, 2020 to select your child’s
preferred school for next year.
We ask all families to pre-enrol, even if
your child is continuing at the same school
or same program. Knowing how many
students to expect helps each school
prepare for September.
Moved?
Update your address at your child’s current
school before pre-enrolling in SchoolZone.
New to the District?
Before April 15, contact your preferred school
to learn how to register as a new Edmonton
Public Schools student.
Learn more at epsb.ca/schools/register.

General information
Entrance standardsEdmonton Public Schools operates under an open
boundary system, allowing students to attend schools
with alternative programs that best meet students’
needs and interests. Vimy Ridge Academy is a unique
school that only offers alternative programs of choice.
Before registering your child, we recommend that you
call our office at 780-465-5461 to arrange a school visit,
schedule a tour or participate in a Shadow Day. This will
give both you and your child an opportunity to see our
school, meet some of the staff and get a feel for our
programming options. All new applicants must meet
our minimum educational prerequisites (a mark of 50%
or higher in each of the four core subjects) for entrance
into junior and senior high (Grades 7 to 12).
The registration process involves three steps:
STEP 1: Go to vimyridge.epsb.ca and contact the
program director for your program of choice.
STEP 2: Applicants will perform an interview or
audition. We’ll review completed application packages
to confirm that the student has met all entrance
requirements and that there is space available at the
applicant’s grade level.
STEP 3: Each applicant will be notified confirming
acceptance into their program of choice at the school,
assuming all entrance requirements have been met.
Junior High Honours program Vimy Ridge Academy’s Junior High Honours program
is designed to challenge students to obtain a deeper
understanding of academic material. Honours program

knowledge they need to succeed in a post-secondary
environment. Prerequisites for the AP program include
an 80% average in the four core subjects and an
application to be completed by the required deadline.

25
Student leadershipYour high school plan
By planning ahead, you can make sure your studies meet requirements and serve your goals and interests. Create a plan that works for you!
Course creditsTo earn credits in a course, you need a mark of at least
50%. Each course is assigned a number of credits
(usually 3 or 5), and credits can only be earned once in
any course.
Course numbering and sequencingA course number typically tells you both the grade level
and level of academic challenge.
• Grade 10 courses are numbered 10 through 15
(for example, Science 10 and Science 14).
• Grade 11 courses are numbered 20 through 25
(for example, Biology 20).
• Grade 12 courses are numbered 30 through 35
(for example, Mathematics 31).
Course numbers are arranged in sequences. For example,
an English Language Arts course sequence might involve
taking English Language Arts 10-1 in Grade 10, English
Language Arts 20-1 in Grade 11 and English Language
Arts 30-1 in Grade 12.
Prerequisites A prerequisite is something you need to do or know
before doing or learning something else. Most Grade 11
and 12 courses have prerequisites. Usually you need to
earn a grade of at least 50% in a prerequisite course
to take the next course in a sequence.
For example, you’ll need at least 50% in Social Studies
10-1 to take Social Studies 20-1.
If you earn less than 50%, you may choose to:
• repeat the course or
• with your principal’s approval, continue to the
next level in a less challenging course sequence
(if available) and earn credits retroactively
For example, if you earn less than 50% in Social Studies
10-1, but continue to Social Studies 20-2 and complete
the course, you will earn credits for Social Studies 10-2
and Social Studies 20-2.
You need to meet course requirements and have 100 credits to earn your high school diploma.

Advanced Placement (AP) is a rigorous academic program that prepares students for the transition from high school to university.
AP Courses help students develop critical-thinking and
problem-solving skills. Enrolling in AP courses will allow
you to complete university courses as part of your high
school studies. The AP courses you take at Vimy Ridge
Academy are recognized by 3,900 universities in over 30
countries.
The AP Advantage:
Students have the flexibility to enrol in the AP classes
that interest them. There are no mandatory courses you
have to register in. Students can choose to take one or
several AP courses or a full AP program, with academic
timetables tailored to students’ individual abilities,
interests and extracurricular commitments.
AP courses allow students to develop and practice
higher order thinking skills with other like-minded,
driven students and participate in enrichment activities,
special events and field trips offered to Advanced
Placement students.
AP courses provide students with an opportunity to get
a headstart on university and even to earn university
credits and advanced standing in university.
When you complete an AP course, you will have the
choice of using the higher grade on either your AP or
diploma exam when applying to university or college.
Completing AP courses will make you eligible for
scholarships and grants only open to Advanced
Placement students.

High school academics
English Language Arts focuses on six areas: listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing.
However, studying English involves much more than learning how to read and write. The two aims of the
high school English Language Arts program are to develop students’ skills in interpreting and analyzing
literature and being able to convey that understanding through diverse written expression.

Math counts! In every aspect of your life, you use numbers, problem solving and spatial reasoning to help
make decisions. The more you learn about how math systems work, the better you will be at making choices
that help yourself and others.

Student leadership
Welcome, Raiders! Vimy Ridge Academy challenges all students to get involved and be part of our traditions. Together, we work to make Vimy Ridge not only a school for learning, but also a school brimming with fun activities for everyone.
Through our vast array of clubs and activities,
every Raider has the opportunity to celebrate their talents
and pursue their interests. Almost all of our students
participate in our theme days, like Pajama Day and Touch
of Class. Our three-day annual ski and snowboard trip
to the Rocky Mountains is a popular event that fills our
buses with students ready to hit the slopes and have fun.
There are also opportunities to travel to conferences with
the Student Leadership team to meet and interact with
leaders from across the country. We host events that
recognize students for their hard work at events like
The VIMY’S and Achievement Breakfast.
Our motto is “turn passion into performance.”
With so many opportunities available, let our motto
be your motivation to get involved!
Student councilThe Student Council Executive is a group of students
who co-ordinate events and activities and sponsor other
