Graduate Computer Engineering Program 2020The UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP classes are a lot smaller than the usual classes and I benefited from that. The professor was able to focus more on each student and understand our English limitations. Studying in the Navitas GSSP class made me feel more comfortable compared to studying in a class full of non-Navitas GSSP students (which I had experienced in my first semester) because there was no pressure of knowing that I was probably the only person who can’t interact that well in English.

I wanted a more extensive degree program that would cover the specific fields I wanted to master. One particular course I was really looking into was Cancer Biology, which was one of the elective courses offered here at UMass Lowell. That, and the opportunity to study for my master’s degree at a research university, really made it easy for me to choose further study here in the U.S.

M2D2 and the Innovation HubEntrepreneurs have the opportunity to turn their great idea into a valuable business opportunity thanks to the Massachusetts Medical Device Center (M2D2) and Innovation Hub at UMass Lowell. M2D2 is a joint UMass Lowell-UMass Medical School initiative that gives entrepreneurs the space and tools they need to move their medical device ideas from patent to production. Entrepreneurs and companies can access world-class researchers and resources at UMass Lowell and UMass Medical School along with student interns. M2D2 has hosted more than 34 start-ups and received over $60 million in private funds and grants.

One floor below M2D2 is the Innovation Hub, which offers shared space and facilities for start-ups involved in sectors such as information technology, robotics, advanced materials and nanotechnology, clean technology and energy and advanced manufacturing. Start-ups have access to offices, shared working spaces, a prototyping lab and equipment, and a variety of support services.

DifferenceMakerUMass Lowell’s DifferenceMaker program encourages students in all academic concentrations to use their skills to solve real-world problems through innovation and entrepreneurship. Participating students can present their ideas to real potential customers, mentors and investors and have a chance to win funding for their venture. Through DifferenceMaker, students build their start-up business skills and graduate with real-life industry experience.

Nonspec, the first campus-wide 2013 DifferenceMaker winner, created a company which makes low-cost prosthetic limbs for people in developing nations. They won $5,000, but it didn’t end there. Since then, their adjustable, injection-molded prosthetic limbs have been refined and improved. They have raised $350,000 in grants and competitions, and they now have a staff of six, three in the U.S. and three in India, home to one in five of the three million people who undergo amputations.

Lowell Blue Light phone system allows you to contact the UMass Lowell Police from many locations on campus to receive immediate help in an emergency.

Health servicesStudent Health Services are located right on campus and help meet all students’ health care needs. All international students are provided with student health insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. There are no fees for any care given on campus.

TransportationThe no-cost university shuttle bus system transports students around campus seven days a week. Most university buildings are within walking distance.

Students can also travel on the Lowell Regional Transit Authority (LRTA) within the region for free with their student I.D.

Advising/tutoringUMass Lowell Navitas GSSP provides tutoring support and academic advising to all students. Students have access to one-on-one tutoring by qualified instructors. Tutoring is free of charge and accessible during the days, nights and weekends.

Academic English (AE) Full-timeThe AE program is designed for students who have not quite met the English language requirements for the UMass Lowell Navitas Global Student Success Program (GSSP).

AE is undertaken on a semester basis and consists of 20 hours of class per week. During AE students will focus on developing consistent competency, confidence, and effectiveness in listening, speaking, pronunciation and grammar/vocabulary skills, while reading, speaking and writing in English to meet college level entrance requirements.

Undergraduate UMass Lowell Navitas Global Student Success Program (GSSP) The Undergraduate UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP, an affiliated educational provider of UMass Lowell, is equivalent to the first year of a bachelor’s degree. The program consists of for-credit courses and provides an academic and cultural bridge from your high school experience to studying for a university degree in the United States. Upon successful completion of the Undergraduate UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP, you will move directly into the second year of your chosen undergraduate degree program.

Program courseworkProgram offerings in business, fine arts, humanities, social sciences, health sciences, mathematics and science include coursework that builds study skills coupled with university courses. Students who complete the Undergraduate UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP can earn up to 32 credits toward their bachelor’s degree at UMass Lowell.

Program durationStudents may complete the Undergraduate UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP program in two, three or four semesters, depending on their academic and English language entry requirements.

prepare for success in your master’s degree programWhen you are accepted into the Graduate UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP (an affiliated educational provider of UMass Lowell), you are also conditionally accepted into the master’s degree program. As long as you successfully complete the Graduate UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP coursework, attain a GPA of 3.0 in both your courses, and meet any other conditions on your letter of acceptance, you will matriculate.

The Graduate UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP courses have been carefully chosen to ensure you develop the necessary skills to succeed in your master’s degree program. During the two semester Graduate UMass Lowell Navitas, GSSP students will gain graduate credit towards their master’s degree.

UMass Lowell Navitas International Scholars AwardThe International Scholars Award is a renewable award offered by the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The scholarship is awarded to all international students who successfully complete the UMass Lowell Navitas Global Student Success Program (GSSP) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The award amount is US$3,000 per year and the scholarship is awarded at the end of each academic year from your sophomore year onwards.

This scholarship is renewable annually and awarded for a maximum of four years. Continuation of this scholarship is dependent on maintaining full-time undergraduate status and a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 at the end of each academic year.

The UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP can periodically offer entrance scholarships to the value of $3,000 towards the UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP freshman year tuition fees. These are limited in number and are considered on a case-by-case basis.

scholarships and bursariesEach year through the UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP academic merit scholarship partnership program, 162 scholarships are awarded worldwide. All applications submitted will be reviewed for scholarship eligibility.

Global Student Success Award of ExcellenceThe UMass Lowell Navitas Global Student Success Program (GSSP) provides a limited number of merit-based scholarships each semester to continuing students who maintain their enrollments in the UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP. Scholarship applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to fostering inter-cultural understanding through their active engagement within the university community to be eligible. UMass Lowell navitas GSSP family bursariesUMass Lowell Navitas GSSP offers financial support in the form of family bursaries. A bursary applies where two or more students from the same family study with a UMass Lowell Navitas GSSP partner institution.*
