The long-awaiting month of March is upon us, the final full-month of the FPHL regular season. This weekend, the Columbus River Dragons can get a leg-up on the competition with nine points available vs. Carolina. Roudebush to the flock Carolina traded G Jake Mullen and F Gleb Krivoshapkin to the Mentor Ice Breakers for G Austyn Roudebush. Roudebush is currently on loan to the SPHL’s Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs, and has twice received the SPHL Warrior Hockey Player of the Week award. Mullen was 9-2-2 as a Thunderbird, including two shutouts and a 7-0-0 record at the Annex. However, he was 2-2-2 away from home. Krivoshapkin played only six games for the Thunderbirds, but had three goals, all on the road. “We believe we got better with this trade and we are looking for that number one goaltender and this trade gave us a shot to find that,” said head coach Andre Niec on Tuesday.

Breaking in boots

GRE Carolina’s Jon Buttitta scored twice in his first game as a Thunderbird and then twice again this past weekend in Watertown. Buttitta is a product of Middleburg Heights, Ohio and played his collegiate hockey at ACHA- Kent State University as a member of the Golden Flashes. Prior to his college stint, Buttitta played junior hockey with the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks of the NA3HL with teammate George Holt. Buttitta would also play 14 games with the Carolina Eagles in Wake Forest, N.C., just north of Raleigh. Before he was loaned to the Quad City Storm of the SPHL, Buttitta’s 18 goals and 20 assists made him the top scorer in the FPHL. Buttitta was signed on Tuesday, February 18 as a free agent. Previously, his rights had been traded to the Delaware Thunder, but he never suited up in Harrington for a game.

Pro mo After finishing his collegiate career at SUNY-Cortland, Nick Modica (mo-DEKE-uh) made his professional debut Feb. 28 at Watertown. Modica turned out 34 of 35 shots, but could not secure his first pro win, losing in the shootout 2-1. He would earn his first pro win on Saturday, Feb. 29. “I’m excited to be here,” said Modica after win, “not a lot of people gave me a shot because of my size, but I wanted to prove myself. This group of guys, they welcomed me and made it easy.” Modica had a 3.09 GAA and a .906 SVP while with the NCAA-DIII Red Dragons. He played his junior career with the Jersey Hitmen USPHL Elite program. Modica was a battler in the USPHL and his collegiate head coach said he caught their eye as someone who was tops in the USPHL goaltending statistics.

The playoffs

GRE The Carolina Thunderbirds were the first team to lock up a playoff spot, doing so in January. Now the Thunderbirds are just a handful of wins away from locking-in home ice advantage through the divisional rounds. The Thunderbirds magic number is 9, meaning that if Carolina wins nine games or Port Huron loses nine games or any combination of wins and PH losses to get to 9, Carolina has home ice. The Thunderbirds will not know if they are the number one overall seed until at least the March 27 game vs. Danville in Winston-Salem. The Thunderbirds have made the playoffs each of their first two seasons, last year as the number-one overall seed. Carolina is 5-1-2 in FPHL playoff play with both overtime losses coming against Watertown in the 2018 playoffs.

/BUZZER BEATERS The Thunderbirds have a penchant for scoring goals with less than one minute remaining in a period. Carolina has done it 14 different times this season. A little record hunting Andre Niec sits a 145 FPHL wins, just three shy of break the record set by longtime coach, Phil Esposito. With three wins this weekend, Niec would set the new record at home. Carolina’s head coach earned his 100th win in franchise on Dec. 20, a 5-1 decision over the Mentor Ice Breakers in Mentor. Niec is the only head coach in Carolina’s team history. All of his wins have come in Carolina, except for 31 with Berlin.

THE ANNEX The Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex is a multi-purpose 3,050-seat arena that is home to the Carolina Thunderbirds. Originally called Coliseum Annex (as it is built across from the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum), “the Annex” has been home to hockey since it was built in 1989. Aside from being home to the Carolina Thunderbirds, the building is also an inside venue for the Dixie Classic Fair and has hosted world-famous concerts, like the Gatlin Brothers. The Annex is located across the street from BB&T Field, home of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons football team and is three exits down the road from historic Bowman Gray Stadium.

Someone get the light bulbs

After a 9-6 win in Watertown, the Thunderbirds have played in the second and third highest combined scoring games this season (Nov. 29 14-1 vs. BC). Columbus and Port Huron scored a combined 20 in a 11-9 win for the River Dragons

playoffs

The Battle Creek Rumble Bees are the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention. That sets the west division’s playoff picture. Danbury has clinched a spot in the East with Elmira and Watertown about to follow suit. Here is the playoff picture as it stands now

Carolina’s four longest road trips of the season come in February and March. Date Location Mileage Jan. 30-Feb. 1 Danbury, CT (Danbury) 629 mi. Feb. 14-15 Danville, Ill. (Danville) 619 mi. The only other road trip that the Thunderbirds take in the regular season is to Columbus, a trip they will make four times there-and-back between five games against the River Dragons. Carolina is the best team in the league on the road, having dropped only three road games this season, one in a shootout vs. Danbury. Carolina will be on the road for twelve games after this weekend, playing only eight more at home. All of those games except for two (Watertown Feb. 28-29) are against west division opponents.

czechmate

Jiri Pestuka is the eighth Czech player to join the Thunderbirds roster. Pestuka is from Prostejov, CZE and has played parts of the last five seasons under head coach Andre Niec and is one of the all-time leading point scorers in Berlin River Drivers history. Pestuka will wear number 24 for Carolina.

On the road again The Thunderbirds will play 8 of their final 14 on the road this season. Carolina is 11-2-1-3 on the road this season, the only two regulation losses coming at Danbury. Carolina’s only remaining home opponents are Columbus and Danville, both of whom will play three games at the Annex in the month of March.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

Record: 18-19-5-1 Owner: Jeff Croop General Manager: Scott Brand Head Coach: Jerome Bechard Player Coach: Jay Croop Arena: Columbus Civic Center City: Columbus, Ga.

Columbus River Dragons

If there were a most-improved team award given for improvement in a single-season, Columbus would be a frontrunner for it. At first, this team was tired and forgettable, playing poorly and failing to keep the puck out of their net. Since January though, the River Dragons have been resurgent, dealing for new pieces and signing a good fit to at least try and tide the goaltending woes over. Columbus is coming off a three-game series win over Danbury last weekend at home.

Columbus river dragons

-Columbus hosted their Military Appreciation Night and rebranded as the “Ft. Benning River Dragons” for one night. That evening, they set the single-game FPHL attendance record (5027). -The River Dragons are hosting a celebrity game featuring Columbus Cottonmouths legends against soldiers from Ft. Benning. Jerome Bechard and Levi Lind are among those who will play for the Cottonmouths legends in the game. -Chicago White Sox legend and now baseball commentator Frank Thomas is among those enshrined in the Chattahoochee Valey Sports Hall of Fame on the first floor of the Columbus Civic Center. -After sustaining a chest wound in the Battle of Columbus, a pharmacist began experimenting with pain-killing drugs that didn’t use morphine. In 1866, the pharmacist discovered a sweet and syrupy drink with kola nut extract influenced by coca wines. The pharmacist carried the drink to Atlanta and Columbus would receive a bottling plant in 1902. The pharmacist’s name? John Stith Pemberton. The drink? Coca-Cola

Every overtime or shootout win is worth two points. Every overtime or shootout loss is worth one point. As it relates to win percentage, all overtime/shootout wins count as 2/3 of a win.
