General Waste Collection Tips Set Out Times

Place waste out by 7 a.m (6 a.m. in the downtown core) on the day of collection and no earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before. Remove empty bins and uncollected material from the curb by 9 p.m. on collection day.

Weight Limit All waste containers, bags and bundles must weigh 18kg (40lbs) or less.

Collection Safety Sharp items including glass, ceramics, mirrors and broken toilets must be boxed or covered in cardboard and marked as “glass for disposal”. Set this material out on your garbage collection day. Toilet tanks must be separated from bowls (when possible) and emptied of all liquids. Set toilets out on your garbage collection day.

Appliance Collection Appliances are collected monthly by appointment only (free of charge). All doors must be removed from appliances before placing them out for collection. To book an appointment visit RichmondHill.ca/Appliance or call Access Richmond Hill at 905-771-8800. Appliances can also be dropped off as scrap metal at a waste depot. See page 18 for details.

Electronics and Hazardous Waste Electronics and hazardous waste, including paints, pharmaceuticals and sharps, are not collected at the curb. They can be taken to a waste depot for safe disposal. See page 18 for details.

Recycling Tips Recyclables must be loose inside your blue box, not in plastic bags. Recyclables placed in bags cannot be recycled and will be left at the curb. This includes newspapers and flyers in plastic sleeves.

To reduce wind-blown litter, place heavier objects on top and place blue boxes at the curb the morning of collection instead of the night before. You can also use extra blue boxes instead of overfilling.

For more information please visit RichmondHill.ca/Waste.

G R E E N B I N Weekly Collection

Organics must be bagged, securely tied and placed inside the green bin. Compostable or paper bags are preferred to line your green bin. Plastic bags are also accepted. There is no limit to the number of green bins you can set out for collection.

Avoiding Pests Store your green bin inside (i.e. in your garage or shed). Set your green bin out in the morning (by 7 a.m.) instead of the night before. Always securely latch your green bin. If you store your green bin outside, use a bungee cord to secure the lid. Remove cords before placing your green bin at the curb. You can also hang your bin on a sturdy hook to prevent animals from knocking it down.

How Can Our Community Become More Resilient to Climate Change? Richmond Hill has experienced, and will continue to experience, the impacts of climate change. Extreme weather events, such as ice storms, heat waves, and intense rainfall threaten our homes, public spaces and natural environment.

Resilient Richmond Hill aims to bring our community together to find solutions and opportunities in the face of climate change. As part of Resilient Richmond Hill, our Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP) is seeking ways for residents and businesses to increase energy efficiency, decrease greenhouse gas emissions and save money.

Share your ideas and learn how you can help by visiting RichmondHill.ca/ResilientRH!

Join a Collective Garden or Create a New One! Applications are currently being accepted for collective gardens. With support from the City, these community gardens are run and maintained by a community group and/or organization and can range in size from small raised planters to large vegetable gardens.

Visit RichmondHill.ca/CommunityGarden for more information.

Help Keep Our Waterways Clean! Rain and snow from driveways, roads and roofs can pick up pollutants and carry them into our streams and lakes. You can help to protect our waterways.

Wash your car at a commercial car wash, NOT on your driveway.

Dispose of hazardous waste like oil and paint at York Region waste depots, NOT down a storm drain (see page 18 for details).

Fix your car if it is leaking fluid.

Clean up animal waste and use fertilizer carefully. Excess nutrients in stormwater harm our streams and lakes.

During winter months, use salt alternatives, or use salt sparingly. Salt products harm natural areas and fish.

Snow Windrow Clearing Richmond Hill now has a snow windrow clearing service for all local, residential driveways. A snow windrow is the pile of snow left at the bottom of a driveway after a snowplow has cleared the road.

To ensure the success of this service, we need your help.

1. Don’t park on the street or over the sidewalk when it’s snowing or before snow is expected. This applies even if you have a temporary parking permit. Keep the roads clear for plows and emergency vehicles – or you will be ticketed and/or towed.

2. On waste collection days, place your waste bins one metre (3.5 feet) from the curb on the right side of your driveway (if you’re facing the house). This will allow the plow to clear the snow windrow (see page 5 for details).

3. Don’t park near the bottom of your driveway Windrow clearing can only happen if there is at least one metre (3.5 feet) of clearance between the road and your vehicle.

Visit RichmondHill.ca/WinterUpdates for more information.
