Report HighlightsHighlights
• Full-stack, Back-end and Front-end Developers are the most popular tech profiles in Portugal both for tech professionals and companies;
• Self-taught tech professionals is a growing trend. 20% of respondents learned tech skills all by themselves - thank you, internet!;
• JavaScript is king amongst tech languages, used by the majority of tech professionals - sharing the podium is also Java, .Net and C#;
• If you are looking for a good tech salary, go for Go, Elixir, Ruby and Kotlin, and stay away from VBA, VB.NET and C. Whatever you do, stay in tech, salaries are still higher than in most other industries;
• If you have leadership skills, embrace them. Management positions in tech represent higher average salaries, regardless of your years of experience;
• Our results also reveal women earn on average 23% less than men, showing us there is still a long way towards pay equality in the workplace.

Landing.Jobs - Tech Careers Survey 2020 | p.4
Tech Talent is one of the most sought for resources nowadays. All
companies rely more and more on information technology to improve
their productivity and competitiveness. Hence, a deep knowledge of
the professionals that are building this tech infrastructure is essential
for every organization looking to attract and retain the right talent.
This report is for Companies and Organizations.
On the other side, tech professionals sometimes make career
decisions in the dark, with almost no knowledge of their worth or
comparative market information. The professional career freedom
Landing.Jobs stands for can only exist with this information, so that
every Tech Talent can make informed decisions. This report is also for
Tech Talent.
At Landing.Jobs we are makers of futures. We work to help companies
find, value and retain the best talent for their needs. But, most of all,
we are Tech Talent Career Managers, helping IT professionals make
the best choices along their career lifecycle, improving their freedom,
purpose and happiness. To be the best Tech Talent Career Managers
in the world, we need to know our pool of ‘players’ well. This report is
definitely also for us.
This survey is focused in Portugal, had 2.758 responses, and has
questions about respondents demographics, languages and frameworks
they use, their salaries and what jobs and perks factors are more relevant
to them.
In this report there are some interesting results, like the fact that women
earn less 23% than men, or, regarding job perks, people value the most
Health Benefits and the least Stock Options or Shares
Enter this report at your own risk. You might find you’re hugely
underpaid (or overpaid), or that you (as a company) are offering all
the wrong perks to retain talent. As for us, these results are golden
nuggets we will use not only to improve our process to matchmake the
right talent with the right companies, but mostly to be the best Career
Managers Tech Talent can have.
Please reach us with comments, critics, suggestions or anything else at
[email protected]. Join us making better futures.

Landing.Jobs - Tech Careers Survey 2020 | p.7
These are the more standard roles, and also the most
searched profiles by companies. Not expected was
such a large presence (around 23%) of ‘managerial’
roles (Technical Team Leader, Project Manager,
Product Owner/Product Manager, Scrum Master,
CTO, CIO, Head of IT). This might point to a maturity
growth in organizations regarding its Tech function.
From Landing.Jobs matchmaking activity we felt a
growth in the demand for these profiles.
On the downside, Mobile Developers are clearly a
profile that lost much of its attractiveness, being a
possible indicator that companies are reducing their
investment in mobile native technologies in favor
of more standard technologies like HTML5/CSS
for mobile.
Not surprisingly Full-stack + Back-End + Front-End Developer are in the top places of this list, totalling around 41%.

Landing.Jobs - Tech Careers Survey 2020 | p.9
Information Technology is one of the most accessible
markets due to the enormous availability of self-
training resources, the growing demand for tech
professionals and the insufficient ‘production’ of
tech professionals by the universities.
Entering the Tech Market via Bootcamps is a
relatively new path, at least in Portugal. Up until
now, this path had a low relevance, but we predict
it is about to grow. The number and quality of
Bootcamps is increasing, as companies like
LeWagon, Ironhack, Academia de Código and Wild
Code School increase activity in Portugal; they’re a
very good tool for reskilling professionals from other
areas.
The percentage of self-taught IT professionals (19,7%) might be surprising, as it is usually perceived that ‘universities’ are the only path into Tech.

such as Consulting, Information technology, Web
development, SaaS development, Cloud-based
solutions or services, Software development - other,
Data and analytics. This indicates companies in
Portugal continue to have a big preference for
externalization of their IT functions.
Another possible conclusion regards the low
number of respondents in Government and Public
administration, which might indicate a need for a
stronger bet in IT as a way to increase digitalization.
More than 52% of respondents work on companies that provide IT Services or Products to other companies

Most popular languages
This language remains the world’s most popular as
well as one of the most versatile tools a developer
might have.
The more ‘classical enterprise’ languages (Java, .Net
languages and C#) still make a go at the top rank,
showing it’s heavy usage not only in large companies
but also in some smaller organizations.
Python is on the rise, Ruby not so much, and the
low numbers of Objective-C, Swift and Kotlin show a
decreasing importance in of mobile development.
And the Winner is, withoutsurprise, JavaScript.

languages & Frameworks
Most popular Frameworks
The all-around .NET arises on top, perhaps due to its
widespread use in larger companies.
React seems to be taking the lead on the recent
wave of JavaScript frameworks, pushing Angular to
an honorable third place. Nevertheless, the number
of JavaScript based framework on this rank it’s just
another clear evidence of this language’s typical
dispersion.
Frameworks like Spring, Laravel, Ruby on Rails or
Django are pretty much following the trends of the
languages they are built to.
Also, keep in mind that frameworks’ popularity
tends to be a lot more volatile than programming
languages, so results are always highly debatable.
On the framework’s realm, good old reliable JQuery makes the 1st place (it’s estimated to be used in 73% of of the 10 million most popular sites)

Perceived Fairness in Remuneration byEmployment Type
Usually this employment type has been associated
with insecurity, high-risk and a lot of trouble
managing the job itself.
Apparently this is changing, and it starts to become a
clear option for those Tech professionals who want to
strip off corporate shackles and make their own path,
earning more and having a higher degree of work
flexibility.
Not everything is sweet and blue, for sure, but the
rewards are clear enough for talent.
Who would tell working as a Contractor or Freelancer brings a higher sense of fair salary treatment?

Salary - Income Variation by Region
The North region seems to be a tad extremed, as it
has large percentages on the lower and higher side of
the salary change scale, the latter possibly correlated
with a growth in more specialized IT activities.
The regional salary change pattern in Portugal follows a clear North to South trend, with the former having bigger salary changes.

Salary by Tech Role
Being a solo developer hero without any other
responsibilities, comfortable as it might be, will,
generally speaking, limit your salary progression.
Time to sharpen your soft skills and try new
challenges.
On the lower side of the rank are the less ‘tech’ roles,
like Maintenance, SysAdmin, UX/UI and QA.
Surprisingly (or not) the Business Applications role
is kind of down in this scale. It seems a suit and a tie
is no longer the El Dorado of IT Jobs.
The old way of thinking you, as a developer, need to go for management positions if you want to earn more is confirmed by this chart.

Income Variationby Tech Role
2019 was a not a bad economic year, which makes
this the more stranger.
The chart speaks for itself, but it’s worth mentioning
Data Scientist/Data Engineer (data is eating the
world), DevOps Engineers (getting Developers and
Operations rolling effectively together is a great
costs-saver) as the top categories when it comes to
salary growth.
On the downer side, we have familiar categories
(check the Average Salary by Job Role page) like
SysAdmin Engineers, Computer and Network
Security and QA/Testing. A special word to the
UX/UI role, with the largest “It remains the same”
percentage. No love for designers.
What first strikes us in this chart is that 36% of the respondents salaries remain the same.

Salary per Industry
Now this segmentation shows some unexpected
results. Even if most of the jobs are on companies
that provide services or products to other companies
(‘Which industry do you work at?’), the paycheck
does not follow that line so clearly. As a matter of fact
Web Development, Consulting, SW Development
and IT are in the lower half of the salary scale while
Cloud-based Solutions or Services, SaaS Development
and Data and Analytics are on the top half. It’s a clear
division between the traditional and new providers.
For the remaining ‘regular’ industries, Travel, Internet
and Healthcare/Social services are the top 3 paying
sectors, while the worst payers are Marketing,
Research / Academic or Scientific and Government.
Singling Government here, and given its importance
for society, it seems they are poorly able to provide
attractive paychecks to tech talent, again preventing
a better usage of IT.

Salary values rise, on average, with the number of employees. But over 20
employees’ average salary variations are not very meaningful.
Startup jobs are a viable option regarding salary, but working for IT Services
companies (Consulting Business and Outsourcing) is clearly losing its attractiveness.

salary
Income Variationby Organization Type
Even though Startups had the largest percentage of salary increases over 15% YoY, Scale-ups and Nearshore companies have around 60% of people with salary increases over 5%.
Apparently these are good places to be at.
The laggards: SME, Corporate and worst of them all:
Outsourcing. The lower level of salary increases in
these companies might be caused by a higher level
of commoditization of these sectors, which pressures
their margins down, preventing better salaries for
employees.

salary
Fair remunerationby Organization Type
This might mean the salaries are good or have
increased or that people feel really well working in
these companies (or a combination of all of the above
reasons). Facts are facts, and perceptions count as hell
when attracting and retaining top talent.
Running the risk of generalizing, it seems Consulting,
SMEs and Outsourcing companies may be at the
bottom of the choices of the Tech Talent Pool. They
need to step up their benefits game if they want to
compete with other companies.
When it comes to salary fairness perception, Startups, Scale-ups and Nearshore are booming.

Salary by Language
The first set are relatively new languages, the latter
set are older languages. Causality or correlation?
Python, Scala, R and TypeScript are in good positions
and apparently on the rise.
But you know what else: all of these still make way
more than the average worker of other industries.
Tech is good for your wallet.
If you’re a company, understand that languages
matter. Choose the ones you’ll use wisely. A sign of
the times.
Go, Elixir, Ruby and Kotlin are all the rage. VBA, VB.NET and C mean low wages.

Salary by Framework
On the third place, almost ex aequo, we have React
(no surprise here, taking into account the huge
demand for this framework), and Drupal (still alive
and kicking except when it comes to the paycheck
at the end of the month).
The remaining frameworks don’t present
meaningful average salary differences.
As development frameworks go, there is one clear winner Ember.js and one clear second place Ruby on Rails.

motivations
Considering working asfreelancer or contractor?
30,6% of respondents with a regular employee contract consider going on a Contractor / Freelancer career path during this year.
The relevance of this number certainly follows the
perceptions that Tech Talent starts to increasingly
have regarding the opportunities and rewards these
employment modes bring.
The regular job, tie or no tie, is loosing it’s ‘corporate’
appeal. This trend is seen across age ranges and
experience levels.
To better understand this numbers, pay attention to
the next two pages: what motivates Tech Talent in a
job. You’ll certainly be surprised by some results.

Balance, growth and culture are the most important job motivators for contemporary Tech Talent. High on Maslow’s Pyramid we, IT professionals, are.
And companies, pay attention: technology,
training, work autonomy and impact of
what is developed don’t ring a bell in your
employees heads. Obviously, everyone is
different, but stats are stats.

This might be shocking to some managers, but Tech Talent couldn’t care less about stock options. So, next time you’re thinking how to hire a great developer, do yourself a favor: don’t put that option on the table.
Sedentary as they are, Gym memberships also don’t
matter much.
On the positive side, Health Benefits are mandatory.
A good annual bonus is also highly considered, as
is the computer you provide your Tech Talent with
(geeks will be geeks, after all ;) )

Landing.Jobs - Tech Careers Survey 2020 | p.30
A total of 2.578 Tech Professionals responded to this survey.
Of these, only 2.556 were considered for producing the
results in this report (the ones working in Portugal and
that were not ‘Students’ or ‘Not working right now’).
The respondants are both Landing.Jobs users and othe
IT professionals.
This survey was open to the public from 17/January/2020
to 11/February/2020.
A relevant change from last year’s salary data published by
Landing.Jobs is the fact that those values were based on Jobs
published in our platform, while this Report’s average salaries
and intervals are based solely on respondents data.
