NEW MILTON MUSIC FESTIVAL 2022

WelcomeWe are looking forward to being able to meet in person and we fully understand that for some of you this may be yourfirst time performing in public for a while (or ever!). We want to encourage you that we will do everything we can toarrange the classes to limit crowding, and we will really appreciate your support in making sure that lateral flow tests aredone beforehand, masks are worn, hands are washed and that personal space is respected.

For those concerned about adjudication, please know that we are a friendly festival and our over-riding aim is toencourage you. Our adjudicators are all professional musicians who love to hear music being made and provideconstructive comments to help you develop. They will also award medals and grade your performance. If you really donot want to be graded then our Performance Platform classes may be for you. There will still be a small audience, butconstructive comments will only be given if you indicate you'd like them.

The theme of the festival is "Celebrating Local Talent". Our aims are as follows:

» To encourage people of all ages and abilities in the local community and surrounding areas totake an interest in music, whether choral, vocal or instrumental.

» To provide an opportunity for learners to benefit from the guidance and encouragementavailable from experts in their field.

Our objectives in running a friendly, local festival are:

» To offer an opportunity for musical students and experienced musicians to learn and benefitfrom performing in front of their peers and expert audiences.

» To provide an incentive to study music and an environment conducive to developing musicalskills and talent.

» To facilitate individual personal development through the emotionally enriching experienceacquired through musical expression.

» To enhance the cultural life of New Milton and surrounding areas by hosting and promoting liveand serious music.

» To foster community spirit in New Milton and surrounding areas through offering an opportunityfor voluntary support to the Festival for both individual members of the community and thevarious service organisations.

How to enter the festival on-line.To enter the festival on-line visit the Syllabus page of the website (newmiltonmusicfestival.org.uk/Syllabus/) where youwill be able to register. You can then select the class group that matches your instrument / voice. Once on the page for agroup, scroll down until you find the class you'd like to enter and click "Apply online".

Timetable

The Piano Festival on Saturday 12th March 2022 to be held at Durlston Court School.

All other classes 12th & 19th March 2022 at The Arnewood School.

The entry charge for parents and visitors at BOTH Schools, remains at £2 per person (children & music teachers free).We remain a non-profit making event, but have to make these charges in order to cover the huge costs of running theFestival. The Adult Choral classes will be open to the public to watch at The Arnewood School and will culminate in thepresentation of the Grand Challenge Cup for the best performance of the day.

Adult Choirs, Sunday 20th March 2022 at The Arnewood School.

Items for the concert will be at the adjudicator's recommendation to celebrate the best of the festival. Tickets £5available in advance only.

A detailed timetable of all classes and entrants will be published on the Festival's website by the end of February.Entrant's that have provided an email address will be emailed a pdf copy of the timetable. This email address will also beused to provide other relevant information about the Festival.

Adjudicator: Alison HedgerAfter graduating from the Royal College of Music Alison spent her career making music with, and writing music for children of all

ages. Alison founded the Golden Apple music imprint (now part of the Music Sales Group of Companies) and continues to write

music for her own use and as commissions. Alison's music is internationally known and is widely published and enjoys regular

performances both here and abroad. Although retired from publishing and editing music, Alison continues to maintain a close link

with current Primary education as a Foundation School Governor. Alison writes music not only for schools, but also for churches

and has written many interdenominational all-age worship songs.

Alison's enthusiasm, knowledge of the power of music as an educational tool, her sense of fun and love of children all combine to

make her music accessible to all, and a pleasure to perform. 2020 sees the performance of new music to celebrate the 20th

anniversary of the New Milton Music Festival: Jigsaw of Variations on the theme "It's Our Anniversary".

Adjudicator: Anne HewetsonAnne is well known to us as the founder of this New Milton Music Festival. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in

London, specialising in piano and voice. She obtained her post-graduate Certificate of Education at the University of London, while

continuing her vocal studies under Bruce Boyce.

Anne has taught music in schools throughout the age range, in the New Forest area and the Isle of Wight. She has given singing

lessons to individual pupils both in school and privately, and has entered pupils for festivals and examinations with considerable

success.

Woodwind Saturday 19th March at The Arnewood School

Adjudicator: Helen DuffyHelen was winner of South East Arts "Young Musicians" Platform, winner of the Royal Overseas League Music Competition, and

youngest national finalist in the first Shell / London Symphony Orchestra Music Scholarship. She studied at the Guildhall School of

Music, winning multi instrumental prizes.

Since making highly acclaimed début recitals at the Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room at the age of 19, Helen has established an

international reputation as a multi instrumentalist, and has toured and broadcast on radio and television around the world. In addition

to solo performing, she is a member of the Vicente Duo with BBC Symphony Orchestra harpist, Louise Martin, and leader of the

Danesfield Quartet (String/Flute Quartet). As a pianist, she enjoys the variety of solo playing and accompanying. An interest in jazz

in recent years has led to work in this field.

Helen has enjoyed the variety of examining, adjudicating and teaching, in addition to her performing career over the last sixteen

years, widely around the world.

Brass Saturday 19th March at The Arnewood School

Adjudicator: Simon NichollsBorn in Bristol, Simon began playing trombone aged 8 with his local Scout and Guide Band. In 1989, he successfully auditioned for

the Royal Marines Band Service. In a career spanning 30 years in various Royal Marines Bands around the country, he has travelled

extensively performing at home and abroad as well as having spells as an instructor at the Royal Marines School of Music and as

bandmaster of two Royal Navy Volunteer Bands. In his spare time Simon is a private music tutor and is principal conductor of

Bournemouth and District Concert Band. Outside of music, Simon is a qualified rugby coach and referee.

Strings Saturday 19th March at The Arnewood School

Adjudicator: Stefan DefiletStefan splits his time between teaching and playing the violin. He's been head of strings at Bournemouth University since 2010,

teaches at Poole Grammar, and privately. As a performer he has had a varied life. 4 years touring 16 countries with Canadian show

"Barrage", over 200 dates and several recordings with the BSO. Pop session work includes Girls Aloud (Brit Awards single of the

year "The Promise"), The Pet Shop Boys, Alesha Dixon.

More recently, he plays in various jazz groups, and in "The Bomo Swing", which has played at the Isle of Wight Festival, Bestival,

Camp Bestival, Larmer Tree Festival etc.

He is also very involved in amateur music, and has lead the Westbourne Orchestral Society for around 5 years. His string quartet, the

Alani String Quartet, plays at around 40 weddings and functions a year. He is very excited to have been commissioned by

SoundStorm to write an 80 minute world music show, and that "Around the World in 8 Days" will be performed by hundreds of

school children at the BIC on the 12th July 2022.

Adjudicator: Michael HulmesMichael Hulmes lives in Poole and started to play the classical guitar when he was eleven. He gave his first public performance at

the age of twelve and his first solo recital at the Poole Arts Centre just before his fifteenth birthday. He studied at the Guildhall

school of Music and Drama and in Cardiff at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he studied with renowned British

guitarist John Mills. In 1992, he gained a place in the string semi finals in the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition.

Michael has played live on BBC Radio Solent and BBC Radio Wales, as well as appearing on Welsh Channel 4. He made his

national radio debut as part of the BBC Radio Two Young Musicians series. Since graduating, Michael has established himself as

one of the most competent and popular classical guitar teachers in Dorset, as well as performing throughout the UK with duet

partner Hayley Savage and in solo concerts and recitals. In 2001 he gave his first concert tour of Hawaii to coincide with the release

of his fourth album ?Solo?.

Adjudicator: Felicity PringleFelicity studied percussion locally from the age of 10 under the guidance of Cynthia Mason and Ron Vint, before gaining places

at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and Coventry University. Since returning to Dorset, she has become a specialist

teacher in Samba, African Drumming and Percussion in schools across Bournemouth and Poole, and performs for local concerts,

shows and events. As a teenager, she competed in The New Milton Music Festival and won the title of Senior Young Musician of

the Year.

Adjudicator: Samantha CarrascoSamantha studied piano with Yonty Solomon at the Royal College of Music, London, where she was awarded an Exhibition

Scholarship followed by the prestigious Phoebe Benham and Leverhulme Junior Fellowship. She completed a PhD in 2013 entitled

The Austen Family Music Books and Hampshire Music Culture, 1770-1820, which studied the music collection of Jane Austen and

her family.

Samantha is an examiner, trainer, moderator and presenter for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, working

nationally and internationally in classical music, diplomas and jazz. Samantha is the Head of Keyboard at Peter Symonds College,

Winchester, and is also the piano consultant for King Edward VI School, Southampton.

As orchestral pianist with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, highlights have included performing at the BBC Proms and

Stravinsky's Petrushka with live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3. With the recently formed Austen Trio, Samantha performed in

celebrations of the Jane Austen Bicentenary in 2017 and at Harvard University in 2018.

Regulations1. Competitions are restricted to amateurs, an amateur being one whose main occupation is not in teaching or performing the subject covered by the

class.

2. Entries must reach the Section Secretary by or before the closing date (7th February 2022), accompanied by the appropriate fee(s). On-line entries

will only be accepted and processed once payment is received by the closing date (see also reg 15).

3. A performer's age is reckoned as on 1st September 2021.

4. An entry by a competitor under 18 shall be submitted or signed by a person over 18 on the competitor's behalf.

5. The submission of a paper entry form or on-line entry shall be deemed as acceptance of the Regulations of the Festival by the competitor or

signatory.

6. Notice of withdrawal should be made in good time to the Section Secretary. The entry fee will be forfeited.

7. A maximum of 3 entries per person, across all classes.

8. A copy of Own Choice music must be brought on the day for the adjudicator. Photocopies are allowed ONLY if the piece to be performed has been

selected from a collection already purchased by the competitor.

9. All solos should be performed with piano accompaniment unless expressly written for unaccompanied instrument or voice. Audio backing tracks will

be allowed for groups or choirs (own equipment to be used). No audio or backing tracks or microphones to be allowed in any other circumstance.

10. If the OFFICIAL ACCOMPANIST is required then their fee must be included with the entry. Music or photocopies for the official accompanist

MUST reach the Section Secretary by 1st March 2022. The original, not photocopies, must be used for the performance.

11. Competitors are asked to keep to the time limits so that classes do not overrun.

12. Competitors are invited to announce their chosen piece; should a competitor prefer, the class steward will do so.

13. Certificates are awarded in the following categories: COMMENDED, HIGHLY COMMENDED, MERIT, DISTINCTION and HONOURS. Trophies

are awarded to Class winners, usually for Merit, Distinction or Honours, at the adjudicator's discretion.

14. The adjudicator's decision is final.

15. Payment: Cheques are to be made payable to NEW MILTON MUSIC FESTIVAL. If entering on-line, payment can be made by cheque or bank
