LEIF DISTRICT NEWS PAGE 1 OF 2 2020 Special Session – The View from My Office – Last Update The 2020 Special Session has ended, and I am really not sure why we gathered, or how the actions over the last few days will help Rural Oregonians struggling to economically survive. I came to this session with hopes that the leadership and the Governor would deal with four pressing issues: Fix and fund the unemployment system which is clearly broken. Ensure stable funding for primary, secondary, and post-secondary education. Develop liability protection for our schools and municipal organizations that are reopening to serve the citizens. Review and update the department budgets in light of the reduced state revenue forecast. I had also hoped that we would create workgroups to review the myriad of Executive Orders and begin converting them into actual legislation. I was hoping that the Governor would involve the elected officials in creating a framework for the next period in which we fight this Coronavirus pandemic. Alas, none of that happened. Instead, the elected officials were simply asked to quickly review and pass a series of bills that the Governor and the leadership wanted to enact. Frankly, I do not understand why this special session was called since the citizens were prevented from attending, no testimony was taken, and frankly, none of the work focused on the economic challenges of Rural Oregon. Rural Oregon is struggling under the economic impacts created by the numerous executive orders. I’m hoping that the Governor will call a Special Session to deal exclusively with the impact from her Executive Orders and the economic devastation caused by the pandemic actions in Rural Oregon. I will continue to encourage the Governor to use the elected legislature rather than her Executive Orders. OREGON HOUSE DISTRICT 2 JUNE 26 TH 2020 SPECIAL SESSION DAY #3

2020 Special Session – The View from My Office – Last Update The 2020 Special Session has ended, and I am really not sure why we gathered, or how the actions

over the last few days will help Rural Oregonians struggling to economically survive. I came to this session with hopes that the leadership and the Governor would deal with four pressing issues:

• Fix and fund the unemployment system which is clearly broken. • Ensure stable funding for primary, secondary, and post-secondary education. • Develop liability protection for our schools and municipal organizations that are reopening to

serve the citizens. • Review and update the department budgets in light of the reduced state revenue forecast.

I had also hoped that we would create workgroups to review the myriad of Executive Orders and

begin converting them into actual legislation. I was hoping that the Governor would involve the elected officials in creating a framework for the next period in which we fight this Coronavirus pandemic. Alas, none of that happened.

Instead, the elected officials were simply asked to quickly review and pass a series of bills that the

Governor and the leadership wanted to enact.
