Van Horn has proven to be a machine of consistency on the Hill, earning 16 NCAA Tournament berths in 17 seasons, including six trips to the College World Series, as well as a conference championship and five SEC Western Division titles. He has 689 wins at Arkansas entering the 2020 campaign, the second-most in school history.

Casey Martin and Heston Kjerstad have been touted as the best two position player duo in the country heading into the 2020 campaign. The juniors, who have been everyday starters since their freshman seasons, have accrued preseason All-America accolades from every major outlet this winter, as well as preseason All-SEC honors from the conference coaches.

ALL-AMERICAN TRIO Three Razorback juniors have been blessed with the honor of 2020 Preseason All-America status from the various outlets that cover college baseball. Outfielder Heston Kjerstad and infielder Casey Martin have garnered praise from five outlets, both landing on the first team twice, with Kjerstad earning first team accolades from all five. The duo has also been joined by catcher Casey Opitz, who earned third team honors from Baseball America.

ALL-AMERICA SUPERLATIVES • Both Baseball America and the NCBWA placed Heston Kjerstad & Casey Martin on their preseason First Team All-America lists.• Baseball America’s teams, selected by Major League Baseball scouts, rated Casey Martin as the “Fastest Runner” among the three teams and listed Casey Opitz with the “Best Catcher Arm.”• D1 Baseball’s Position Power Rankings placed three Razorbacks in the top five at their respective positions: Heston Kjerstad (1st - Outfield), Casey Martin (3rd - Shortstop) and Casey Opitz (5th - Catcher). Outside of the three All-Americans, D1 Baseball ranked: Christian Franklin (26th - Outfield), Zebulon Vermil-lion (26th - Relief Pitcher), Robert Moore (29th - Second Base), Connor Noland (63rd - Starting Pitcher) and Patrick Wicklander (64th - Starting Pitcher) in their Preseason Power Rankings as well.

RESPECT FROM THE LEAGUE’S COACHES When the dust settled after a vote by the conference coaches, the Razorbacks finished with four 2020 Preseason First-Team All-SEC members. The All-American trio all received the notoriety, while being joined by junior designated hitter Matt Goodheart. Arkansas was the only school with more than two players on the first team, placing four on this year’s squad.

THE AMARILLO SLUGGER Junior outfielder Heston Kjerstad avoided the sophomore slump with another dominating performance at the plate as a sophomore in 2019. The Amarillo, Texas, native hit .327 over 266 at-bats and 65 starts, recording 87 hits, including 13 doubles, a triple and 17 homers. It was the second consecutive season he’s tallied 87 knocks, as he notched 51 RBIs and scored 53 runs in 2019. With his 58 RBIs in 2018, the feat made him the first Razorback to have 50 or more in his first two seasons since Rodney Nye in 1998 & 1999. He finished the year with 24 multi-hit performances, good for third on the team, with half of his multi-hit games consisting of three or more. Kjerstad finished the 2019 season as a Second-Team All-SEC honoree.

PRIDE OF LONOKE Junior infielder Casey Martin is poised to bounce back from a streaky 2019 as he returns to the shortstop position for the second season at the collegiate level. A junior from Lonoke, Arkansas, Martin finished his sophomore season with a .286/.548/.364 line at the plate, starting all 66 games. He tallied 81 hits, 40 for extra bases with 21 doubles, four triples and 15 homers. Martin also recorded 57 RBIs and scored 67 runs, both figures ranking second on the squad last season. He earned All-SEC Second Team honors as a sophomore after hitting .295 in conference play with 38 hits, 28 runs and a team-high nine homers and 22 RBIs. Martin tied for the team lead in multi-hit performances with 26 and was second in multi-RBI games with 16. Overall, his 155 total bases was good enough for 15th in the NCAA last season.

MAN BEHIND THE PLATE Casey Opitz, the junior catcher from Centennial, Colorado, enters his second season as the team’s starting catcher after solidifying himself as one of the top players at his position in the country. He recorded 43 hits, three doubles and three homers, to go with 33 RBIs and 31 runs scored over 50 starts as he moved into the starting catching role last season. He had a memorable Super Regional in Fayetteville, tallying four hits in nine at-bats, with one homer, five RBIs and two runs scored as the Razorbacks advanced to the College World Series for the 10th time in program history. He put together a strong year behind the plate, throwing out 22-of-24 runners attempting to steal a base, while committing only four errors in 531 chances. The Hogs were 36-14 in 2019 when Opitz was part of the starting battery.

TOEING THE RUBBER Dave Van Horn’s Opening Weekend rotation is set to feature a pair of 2019 mainstays and a fresh face as the Razorbacks host the Panthers this weekend. Sophomores Connor Noland and Patrick Wicklander will get the nod on Friday and Saturday, respectively, while freshman Blake Adams takes the mound in game three on Sunday afternoon. Noland was a member of last year’s Opening Weekend rotation, starting the second game of the series against Eastern Illinois, while Wicklander saw action as the first reliever used in the third game vs. the Panthers.

BASEBALL GUY Connor Noland, from Greenwood, Arkansas, was tabbed as the Opening Day starter for Dave Van Horn’s 2020 club. Last season, Noland led the Razorbacks wit 19 starts, appearing in 20, posting three wins and a 4.02 ERA over 78.1 innings of work. He struck out 55, walked 14 and allowed 42 runs, 35 earned, as opponents hit .244 against him at the plate. Noland’s top performances on the mound came in a pair of SEC games against Mississippi State (April 20) and Tennessee (April 28), going 7.0 or more innings in each contest. He tallied a combined 15 strikeouts with no earned runs in the two contests, with a season-best 10 K’s against the Volunteers. The former Razorback quarterback during his freshman season, committed to baseball full-time after the 2019 run to the College World Series. Noland earned Freshman All-America honors from Perfect Game last year.

WICKY WICKY Lefty Patrick Wicklander will get the nod in game two of this weekend’s series against Eastern Illinois. From San Jose, California, Wicklander put together a 6-2 overall record in 15 starts and 22 appearances, finishing the year with a 4.32 ERA in 66.2 innings on the mound. He leads all returning pitchers with 90 strikeouts in 2019, which ranked second on the team, with 35 runs allowed, 32 earned, holding opposing hitters to a measly .209 clip. He allowed two or fewer runs in 17 of 22 apperances last season, posting eight strikeouts in back-to-back outings against Charlotte and Western Illinois on March 6 and 12, respectively. Wicklander’s first time on the mound as a collegian came against Eastern Illinois last season, tossing 2.1 frames of two-hit, one run ball, strikeout four as the first reliever in the contest.

LOCAL KID Freshman right-hander Blake Adams is poised to make his collegiate debut in the series finale against Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon. Growing up less than 15 miles from Baum-Walker Stadium in Springdale, Adams had a stellar prep career, winning 23 games while posting a high school career ERA of 1.64 with 288 strikeouts over 200.2 innings. His senior season featured 96 strikeouts and 16 earned runs allowed, holding batters to a .166 batting average. He helped Har-Ber HS to a state title in 2018 en route to First-Team All-USA Arkansas Baseball accolades.

WELCOME TO THE HILL Arkansas added two position player transfers who are set to be in the Opening Day lineup on Friday after-noon. Redshirt-junior outfielder Braydon Webb (Grayson CC) and redshirt-senior Cole Austin (West Virginia/Arizona State) come to Arkansas with the intent to bolster the expectations on this year’s squad. Webb tore the hide off the ball at Grayson the last two years, hitting .402 with 99 hits, 51 for extra bases, with 74 RBIs and 96 runs scored during his time in JUCO. He was an NJCAA First-Team All-American in 2019. Austin began his career at West Virginia, recording a .302 clip at the plate behind 73 hits, 44 RBIs and 41 runs in 2017. After sitting out in 2018 due to transfer rules, he played in 10 games in 2019 before missing the rest of the year to an injury. Webb is expected to start in left field, while Austin will be a corner infielder.

RESIDENT SENIOR Infielder Cole Austin is Arkansas’ lone resident senior in more ways than one. The 23-year-old Georgia native is the oldest student-athlete on the roster this season by about two months and the only player with the senior classification this season.

Junior outfielder Heston Kjerstad could be on the verge of a special junior season on the Hill. The Amarillo, Texas, native has recorded 87 hits in each of the last two seasons, as 61 of his 174 hits have gone for extra bases, including 31 homers.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Connor Noland is set to start Opening Day for the Hogs on Friday vs. Eastern Illinois. It marks the third time in four years an Arkansan has been tabbed as the Opening Day starter by Dave Van Horn (Blaine Knight - 2017 & ‘18).

YOUNG BUCK The youngest player on the roster is freshman infielder Robert Moore. Checking in at 17 years old, Moore should be getting ready for his senior season at Shawnee Mission East High School in Kansas, but instead elected to graduate early and join the Hogs in time for spring practices. Moore was rated as the top player in the state of Kansas and No. 20 overall prospect by Perfect Game, playing in a multitude of showcases during his prep career. He is the son of Kansas City Royals General Manager Dayton Moore.

OLDEST & YOUNGEST The right side of the infield is shaping up to feature the oldest and youngest players on this year’s roster in Cole Austin (23) and Robert Moore (17). Not only will the two share the same side of the diamond, but their lockers are also next to each other in the Arkansas clubhouse. The time between the two birthdays is 1,882 days, shy of six years. Here are some things that happened before the birth of Robert Moore:• Titanic became highest-grossing film of all time.• The last episode of Seinfeld aired on television.• Mad Cow disease.• Y2K.• Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace is released and ruins the Star Wars franchise.• Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone debuts at the box office.

CAPTAINS KEVIN & CASEY Before the team left for the Christmas break, head coach Dave Van Horn had his team select captains for the 2020 season. After the dust settled, redshirt-junior pitcher Kevin Kopps and junior catcher Casey Opitz were voted by the team to be this year’s captains. Opitz was unanimously voted by the team to be a captain of the 2020 squad, as a captain’s battery is almost inevitable at Baum-Walker Stadium this season.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN The 98th edition of Arkansas baseball features players from nine different states. Ten student-athletes on the 35-man roster hail from the Natural State, the second-most state representation on this year’s team behind 11 from Texas. Six position player starters and two rotation pieces return from last year’s College World Series team, as a total of 16 newcomers join the fray to make up the 2020 unit.

THAT WAS LAST YEAR For the first time since the 2001-02 seasons, Arkansas will face the same opponent as the year before in its season opener. Last year, the Razorbacks hosted Eastern Illinois in a three-game set that was shortened to two days at Baum-Walker Stadium. Arkansas racked up 30 runs and allowed 12 over the three games, picking up victories of 15-7, 12-3 and 3-2 to earn its first sweep of the 2019 season. It also moved the Razorbacks to 29-2 all-time against the Panthers, with all 31 games coming in Fayetteville.

IN THE RANKINGS Arkansas begins the year ranked in the top 11 of all six polls, sitting as high as No. 4 from Perfect Game. It is the second time in three years the Razorbacks have found themselves inside the top five to start the year. Last season, Arkansas began the year in the mid-teens in most of the polls. >> 4th - Perfect Game>> 5th - USA Today Coaches>> 6th - NCBWA>> 7th - D1 Baseball>> 9th - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper>> 11th - Baseball America

FACING THE BEST Head coach Dave Van Horn has mapped out another strong schedule for the Hogs in 2020. The 32-game home slate, including home SEC series against Alabama, Florida, Texas A&M, Auburn and Georgia. In addition, Arkansas will travel to Texas in late February to play Oklahoma, Texas and Baylor in the Minute Maid Classic at the home of the Houston Astros. >> 16 teams with 30 or more wins in 2019 (Five with 40 or more)>> 10 NCAA Tournament teams>> 1 conference overall champions (Illinois State)>> 4 NCAA Super Regional teams (Mississippi State, Ole Miss, LSU, Auburn)>> 2 College World Series appearances (Mississippi State, Auburn)

OPENING DAY DOMINANCE Arkansas has had a lot of success on Opening Day under head coach Dave Van Horn. In his 16 seasons at the helm, Arkansas has never lost its first game of the season under Van Horn and have won all 16 games by an average of over 6.0 runs. Overall, Arkansas has outscored its opponents, 141-43, in the first game of the year.

CHECK THE CROWD REACTION The Razorback faithful came out in droves in 2019, as more fans than any other ballpark in the nation. Arkansas saw 93,868 fans pack the stadium during the two postseason rounds that showcased the Hogs advancing to their 10th College World Series in program history. The total was 4,000 more than attended last year’s Regionals and Super Regionals. Baum-Walker Stadium was one of eight ballparks to host both postseason rounds and the only one to surpass 90,000 in total attendance. In the games featuring the Razorbacks, the average attendance was 10,845 – including 11,276 during Super Regionals. All three Super Regional crowds exceeded 11,000 and are some of the largest postseason paid attendances in stadium history. Including the postseason, total attendance at Baum-Walker Stadium last season climbed to 348,775, the third-highest total in the nation. On average, Arkansas accumulated 8,719 fans per game, the fourth-highest in the country. It was the 16th-straight year that Arkansas has ranked in the top-five in the nation in attendance.

TARGET ON THE BACK In addition to four preseason First Team All-SEC honorees, the league coaches also selected Arkansas to win the SEC Western Division this season, garnering one vote to win the entire league. Last season, the Razorbacks won a share of the division crown for the second consecutive season en route to back-to-back trips to the College World Series.

|| RAZORBACK NOTES

Junior infielder Casey Martin is set for his third season on the Hill and second as the team’s starting shortstop. The Jackrabbit from Lonoke posted his second consecutive season with 80+ hits in 2019, with 13 more extra-base hits than he did as a freshman.

A scene unlike any other, Baum-Walker Stadium played host to the largest postseason attendance in 2019, welcoming over 90,000 fans into its humble abode. Including the postseason, total attendance at Baum-Walker Stadium last season climbed to 348,775, the third-highest total in the nation. On average, Arkansas accumulated 8,719 fans per game, the fourth-highest in the country. It was the 16th-straight year that Arkansas has ranked in the top-five in the nation in attendance, accomplishing the feat in all but the first year of head coach Dave Van Horn’s tenure. Baseball America once noted Baum-Walker Stadium as the top college ballpark, remarking “The first of its kind remains College Baseball’s Pinnacle.”

After 17 years as head coach of the Razorback Baseball program, Dave Van Horn has continued to elevate Arkansas into one of the nation’s premier teams year in and year out. Over his 17 seasons as head Hog, Van Horn has led Arkansas to six College World Series appearances, 16 NCAA Tournament berths, one Southeastern Conference overall title, five SEC Western Division championships and a total of 689 wins, averaging more than 40 wins a season.

Ever since returning to his alma mater in 2003 to take over for retiring SEC legend Norm DeBriyn, Van Horn has continued to successfully field nationally competitive teams, while also grooming numerous All-Americans, all-conference and future Major League players.

Under his guidance, 28 Razorbacks have been named All-Americans, 42 as All-SEC players, and 109 have been picked in the MLB Draft. Those draft picks are the third-most among all active head coaches in the SEC.

Van Horn is the second-winningest coach in Arkansas history with 689 wins entering the 2020 season. In 2018, with a win at San Diego State, Van Horn became only the second active head coach in the SEC with 600 or more wins at their current school.

Including his years at Nebraska, Northwestern State and Central Missouri State, Van Horn has racked up 1,060 wins at four-year institutions, which is 15th-most among all active coaches. He is also one of 10 active coaches with 1,000 or more wins at four-year schools.
