We extend to you a very warm welcome and thank you for your interest in the Spitzer Ranch, LLC genetic program. We are excited about our 2020 PROFIT MAKER BULL SALE. This will be our fi rst online auction which will open Thursday, October 1 and close “Racehorse Style” at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 3 (CDT). We will be offering a super group of 22 BRANGUS and ULTRABLACK Age Advantaged Bulls (17-20 months of age).

In some ways, this is a sunrise experience or new beginning for our families as we have not had an auction bull sale since 2016. Sales since then have been private treaty as we had only a few bulls during our rebuilding phase following the 2016 dispersal of all mature cows. It has been slow, but we rebuilt from the ground up with the best 22 heifer calves from the 2014 calf crop to our current 85-plus cowherd. However, we are certainly not newcomers as we have been breeding registered Brangus seedstock since 1982.

GENOMICALLY ENHANCED-EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES (GE-EPD) Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) values are exactly what the term implies. If two bulls are used on a uniform group of cows, the progeny are expected to have differences in average performance relative to the EPD values for the two bulls for whatever trait of interest. EXAMPLE: If one bull has BW EPD of 2.0 pounds and another bull has BW EPD of -1.5 pounds then the expected average BW of the resulting calves will differ by 3.5 pounds. Since EPD are reported in accepted units of measure (pounds, centimeters, percentage, etc.) this example holds for each EPD. The EPD value includes the phenotypic performance of the individual as well as all phenotypes on relatives (sire, dam, grandparents, sisters, brothers, cousins and so forth – every relative in the database). Volumes of research have proven EPD are good predictors of differences among bulls for genetic merit. In short, bull selection based on EPD are many times more effective and accurate than selection based on any single phenotypic measure.

Today however, that is not enough. With the advent of DNA testing we now com-bine the traditional EPD with the genomic testing to generate GE-EPD. Genom-ic-Enhanced EPD are far more accurate than the EPD of old. Those GE-EPD pro-vide you (and us) with the same amount of information as if we had 10-20 calves (depending on exactly which trait) already on the ground and in the Brangus Database system. Yes, we can see his value as a parent before the calves are born! How neat is that?

Adding the genomics drastically reduces your chances of purchasing the wrong bull on sale day. The GE-EPD is considerably more accurate than the traditional EPD by itself. AND, orders of magnitude more accurate than any of the individual weights and measures with which many people try to confuse you. As Brangus Seedstock Producers desiring to be your bull supplier for the long haul, Spitzer Ranch is adamant about GE-EPD being your best tool in bull selection. We look at it as customer service when we can provide you with better information on the bulls in our sales. In our minds, genomic testing allows us to market cattle with more integrity because the genetic predictions are so much more accurate on young animals or those with few progeny records.

Besides that, it reduces the risk that the bull you buy does not live up to your expectations when he was purchased. Not only can you be more comfortable with your purchasing decision, we can be more confi dent that we provided to you the absolute best data we can on how that bull will perform as the male parent of your next calf crop. We passionately believe it answers the question: “How can we provide the most valuable and unbiased information to sell our bull’s genetics to the right buyer?”

FOR THE DIEHARDS. We do give the Brangus Association registration number on each animal. If you just cannot help yourself, you can look the bull up on the Brangus website and see the individual weights. They mean truly little, but we sure do not try to hide data.

Every bull in this catalog has GE-EPD, meaning their EPD are based on all available data PLUS a DNA profi le and bulls are additionally parent verifi ed. The Brangus association computes EPD monthly and these were retrieved from the AUG 2020 run.

We have additionally separated the GE-EPD Table into the two components of traits expressed in CALVES SIRED BY AN INDIVIDUAL BULL and those expressed by DAUGHTERS OF AN INDIVIDUAL BULL.

CALVING-EASE BULLS Over the years we have become more and more conservative on “Calv-ing Ease Bulls” for use on heifers. We have adopted the philosophy that it is better for us to have stricter guidelines than for you to be sorry at calving time. That is why we developed our Starr System to give guidance in selecting those easy calving bulls for use on heifers. This system assigns from 0 or no stars to 5-Stars based on “cowboy logic” and our assessment of the science behind BW and CED EPD as well as adjusted BW and that bull having been born with no assistance. What we used to FLAG as a Calving Ease Bull would be a 3-Star bull in our current system and would be recommended to be a Superior Calving Ease bull for breeding well developed heifers. However, we now desig-nate 4-Star Elite Calving Ease bulls and 5-Star Ultimate Calving Ease bulls as even lower risk for calving problems.

Obviously, there are no guarantees for preventing diffi cult births in heif-ers. Even the most proven “Calving Ease Bulls” of any breed will sire a large calf every so often. However, this information is meant to serve as a guide for managing risk of calving diffi culty in your fi rst-calf females. Our goal is to help you eliminate heifer calving problems to the best of our ability.

BUT, lets get real on calving ease! Our 3-Star, 4-Star and 5-Star bulls are meant to be used to breed virgin yearling heifers such that they will have little to no calving problems with their fi rst calf. All other bulls with 0-Stars, 1-Star or 2-Stars are very appropriate to use on cows that have already had at least one calf. Brangus and Ultrablack have an excellent reputation for siring the right sized calf and there are almost no bulls in these breeds that cannot be used on mature cows with no calving diffi culties. In fact, because the general correlation between size at birth and growth is extremely high, you may be losing growth (weaning and yearling weight) if you use extreme calving ease bulls on mature cows.

In general, choose bulls with a ranking of 3-Stars and above on virgin yearling heifers for their fi rst breeding. Use any of the other bulls on ma-ture cows in your herd. You do not need to pay extra for an easy-calving, low birthweight bull when it is not necessary to do so. On the other hand, a “Calving-Ease Bull” to breed yearling heifers can be a God send.

SPITZER RANCH, LLC STAR RATING SYSTEMWe have watched the industry and studied a long time to make bull selection easier for our customers. After a great deal of research and study we released our STAR RATING SYSTEM in 2019 for an all-encompassing guide to evaluate the broad categories of Curve Bending Genetics, Calving Ease, Growth and Carcass. Please re-member, GE-EPD are the absolute best and most precise tools for your bull selection and you should use individual GE-EPD and, more importantly, their respective Percentile Rank, to hone-in on individ-ual traits specifi cally needed in your cow herd. The Star System simply gives you a tool to quickly look at those four broad catego-ries and quickly fi nd bulls with the GENETICS that fi t your needs.

The Star System uses all available information along with “cowboy logic” to rate the bulls for the four categories. The more stars, the better for that category. Each bull is rated from 0 to 5 stars and a bull must be in the top half of the database for Growth and Carcass to get even one star while fi ve stars are only given to the ultimate cream of the crop for that category. For Calving Ease, our recom-mendation would be to use 3-Star, 4-Star and 5-Star bulls to breed heifers.

Those who have followed our program (since 1982) know how hard we have focused on fi nding and creating bulls with the right genet-ics to decrease birth weights and increase growth at the same time. Since those traits are antagonistic that is a hard task, but we have successfully designed our program to do just that. The Curve Bend-er Rating identifi es those bulls. While there are individuals who ex-cel at Calving Ease and still others that excel at Growth, few can do both in the same Genetic Package and they are CURVE BENDERS!

RETAINED INTEREST BULLSSPITZER RANCH LLC reserves the right to RETAIN A ONE-HALF SEMEN INTEREST on any of their bulls sold. Retained Interest Bulls are clearly so noted in comments. Retained Interest Bulls are in your possession and under your control for natural service and you get all (100%) of the salvage value. We will continue to own half interest in bulls for the pur-pose of collecting and marketing semen, as well as using semen in our own and cooperators’ herds. While it is unlikely large amounts of semen will be collected or sold from many bulls, we need that as an option.

You can decide whether (or not) to be involved with semen sales. As a buyer and at your option, you can also have a ONE-HALF REVENUE SHARING SEMEN INTEREST. You will own half of all semen collected, pay half of all costs involved and participate in your share of revenue from semen sales. We have developed a standard Bull Partnership Agreement spelling out further details. Please call, write or email to re-view a copy of this agreement. We wish to avoid any misunderstandings on retained-interest bulls. If you have any questions at all, please ask. If you chose not to be involved with semen sales, we still reserve the right to collect and market semen on any retained interest bull.

CARASS ULTRASOUNDWe have been using ultrasound technology to evaluate carcass char-acteristics since 1998 (22 years). The results of ultrasound scan data on these bulls and their heifer sisters were outlined in our Spring 2020 Newsletter and they were outstanding. This set of 22 bulls averaged a 14.8 sq. in. REA with REA/CWT averaging 1.34 sq. in. Bulls also averaged an impressive 3.84% IMF. We have noted a few of these in the COMMENTS section of the data block on individual bulls. But, the GE-EPD for all these bulls already have those scan data incorporated so that is your best estimate of REA and %IMF. However, all individual information is available to customers upon request.

9. TM - Total Maternal – Expressed in pounds and predicts the overall weaning weight of calves from daughters of a bull due to the combination of growth potential AND milk production and mothering ability.

10. CEM – Calving Ease Maternal – Expressed as a percentage and indicates the calving ease for daughters sired by this bull. A high-er number predicts greater calving ease or less dystocia for this bull’s daughters.

11. HP – Heifer Pregnancy – Expressed as a percentage and indi-cates the probability that daughters of this bull will have a calf as a 2-YR-OLD. A higher number predicts a greater likelihood of calving by 2-YRs of age.

12. STAY – Stayability – Measures the likelihood that a cow will re-main in the herd thru 6-YRs of age. A higher number is more de-sirable.

13. % RANK – To make it easier to evaluate EPD, the percentile rank-ing is shown below each individual EPD. This is a great way to understand where the individual ranks in the breed for that EPD. For example, where it shows “10%,” this means that EPD value is in the highest, or TOP 10%, of all non-parent bulls in the entire breed. Conversely, “10%” also means that “90%” of all non-parent bulls in the breed have a lower EPD for that trait. (A 10% for BW, however, means lowest, or lightest birthweight.)
