Hello and what a wonderful time to live in

SWFL! As of late we’ve had weather that

can only be described as simply gorgeous and

perfect for our favorite hobby, boating! I hope

you’re getting out and taking advantage of the

sunshine and our great water ways.

In this month’s Mainsheet you can catch up

This month we welcome as our speaker Ruth Haley, owner of The Vine! The Vine

is a wholesale priced wine delivery service in Cape Coral. Ruth will be educating

us on (and allowing us to sample) variations of specialty dessert treats such as

Chocolate, Coffee and Limoncello wines. J.C. Poindexter has arranged for this

opportunity and assures us that these dessert wines will pair well with the varia-

tions of chili and salads that we enjoy in February.

COME JOIN THE MONTHLY PRE-MEETING SOCIALS

Didn’t all 43 of us have a great Wine and Cheese event in January? Did you think that maybe 19

bottles of wine( half a bottle apiece or so) for us all to try had something to do with that? I know

our bottle had only a few drops left in it when we got home. Thank you Ron and Pat for hosting

such a great evening.

February’s upcoming meeting is our annual Chili Event hosted by the Social Committee. Come

hungry and don’t forget your chili, salad, or cornbread. Also add your sangria, cerveza, or any

other favorite drink and we will all have a “ South of the Border” good time.

For March, we’re heading "across the pond” to dear old Ireland. I am not sure how such a small

country (1.6 million people) has been able to command such a big day for … THE WEARING OF

THE GREEN. As I understand, this day is more of a drinking event so we are inviting you to

join us with your favorite beer. The three big Irish breweries are Guinness, Smithweks and

Harps Lager but bring whatever drinks you like. If anyone in the club knows something about

beer… we are looking for help with a beer tasting /testing social event in the fall.

In looking over our membership list, I don’t think I saw an Irish name but we all know the tastes

of Reubens, Soda Bread, Scones, Potatoes, Sausages, Cabbage, and Corned Beef so we would also

like any Irish flavors in appetizers for the group to taste. Nowdays, a computer can find a recipe

for almost anything so be creative. If you have green clothing…. this too is the time to wear it.

Other social news and happenings: Our past commodores, Ginny and Joe Holland, so loved

the Dinner Dances sponsored by the Cape Coral Social Club and loved to include our club mem-

bers. Scheduled events can be found at the capecoralsocialclub.org. Please check out their web-

site and invite fellow CCSC members to attend a social club dance. It would be wonderful to

have a table full of CCSC members at the next dance in honor of Ginny and Joe. Dinner dances

are open to the public and held at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, BYOB.

Cruising News with Captain Fred

Where is the time going? I can't believe that February is all but gone! It seems like only a few days ago we took down our Christmas decorations. Since then we have had two great cruises; the latest, our annual "Go Fly a Kite" cruise to Pink Shell Resort & Marina, captained by Ron and Pat Pye. Ron reports:

We eventually had 7 boats that arrived without mishap at the Pink Shell Marina. MAGPYE, COMPASS ROSE, SEA HUNT, MAX, O’DAY TRIPPIN, DETERMINED, and MUTUAL FUN. (unfortunately, SMALL FORTUNE had to can-cel at the last minute). We occupied the balcony of the Harbour Masters office for our first night of ‘happy hour and heavy hors d’oeuvers’. Great food and drink as always and culminating with Gisela Prager’s tiramisu! We all want the recipe. Also, we had a magnificent spectacle of a large red moon rise. Apparently the moon is currently at one of its nearest points to the earth.

Tuesday was kite flying day. Although the wind was not very strong we had 7 kites flying high, and created a lot of interest on the beach with more than one beach walker asking if it was a national kite flying competition? There was a great variety of kites including one from China. It was also noticeable how many contestants have picked up on the trick of using a fishing pole to launch the kite. Choosing winners from such a great set of kites proved difficult but Pat Pye noticed that each boat was represented so she made an executive decision and awarded a small prize to each boat. That evening we had dinner at Rae’s on the Beach restaurant in the Pink Shell Resort. A small, quiet, upper level restaurant overlooking the Gulf, outstanding service and food even from a limited menu.

All returned home safely on Wednesday.

It has become apparent that the marinas in SW Florida get booked up very quickly particularly during the high sea-son December to April, so we have booked the Pink Shell Marina for next year, this time for 3 nights arriving Tues-day 9th Feb. departing Friday 12th Feb. Put the dates on your calendar and join us.

I know it's a little early to be talking up our April Cruise to Sanibel Bight/Tween Waters, but Dockmaster "Harry" has requested specific boat registration data by March 6 in order to hold our current reservation of 8 slips. Therefore, if you are planning to make this cruise please complete the cruise coupon below and return it to me before March 6. More information will be forthcoming at the next General Meeting.

Cruising News with Captain Fred continued

Cruise Captains Betty and Luc will be leading an adventurous Cruise to Pelican Bay during the week of March 16. The

first day will include an anchorage at Useppa with possible dinner at Cabbage Key. The second and third day will be

spent, on the hook, in Pelican Bay with adventures on Cayo Costa, including hiking trails and nearly deserted beaches.

There is a grill and picnic tables on shore if the group decides a cookout is in order. Deep draft boats will be leaving on

third day at high tide and anchoring again at Useppa, followed by a sail/motoring back home on the fourth day. The

official cruise will start either Monday or Tuesday, depending on weather forecast and boaters are welcome to come

and go at their preference.

Greetings from your Rear Commodore! Looking forward to another month of growing friendships, fun-filled activities and new learning experiences. Our cruise to Pink Shell Resort and Marina was fabulous. Seventeen members and guests had access to all the resort's amenities, plenty of wind for our kites and a gorgeous beach. There was one surprise for me at the Marina: Who knew a dock could be two feet lower than our boat?! This "newbie" to the group still has much to learn...I didn't pack a step stool. I'm sure my poor leg muscles will heal--in time--and I'll be more than ready for our next adventure! Our website got a request for pictures of CCSC activities from a reporter with the News Press. Keep an eye out for coverage in the Cape Life section of the News Press. And if you are on Facebook, please look for the Cape Coral Sailing Club group and join in the fun! You can post pictures and get a glimpse of the “outtakes” from our adven-tures. We always welcome guests for our socials, luncheons and meetings, so do spread the word so others can join in the fun! Gene and I would enjoy some company in our “newbie” status.

Bimini Bait Shack lived up to all the hype and more! A hearty mixture of island fun, food, and music!! The service was terrific…thank you, Christina, you were awesome!! And those drinks…an unbelievable selection of Caribbean rums, I highly recommend “The Fishbowl”!! (pictured at left) Needless to say, all 25 members and guests in attendance, had a fantastic time!

The March luncheon will be held at The LighthouseWaterfront Restaurant, another waterfront restaurant known for its breath-taking views overlooking the entrance to the exclusive Connie Mack Island. Dockage is available, but limited. Check availability before venturing out by boat!
