SBC was established in 2006 as an innovative collaboration between the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) and nine leading UK universities. SBC combines the best of Chinese and British education in one of the world’s leading cities making it a truly international university college.

Our vision is to be known as an international gateway for excellence and innovation and we aim to foster an ethos of responsible leadership and cultural empathy within our students. SBC offers students “Pathways”. These pathways are represented by numbers, which are explained below:

International Foundation Year

SBC’s International Foundation Year is organised and accredited by the educational charity NCUK. When you complete NCUK’s International Foundation Certificate in Business or Engineering you will have achieved a strong grounding in British university education with a qualification that is accepted across the world. You will also be automatically enrolled into one of SBC’s Degress programmes.

In both Business and Engineering, SBC’s degree entry year is organised and accredited by NCUK. Students successfully completing this year are guaranteed a place at one of SBC’s 9 UK partner Universities or a place on one of SBC’s degree programmes delivered entirely in Shanghai.

BA (Hons) Business Management

SBC and Sheffield Hallam University are pleased to offer you the chance to study Business Management entirely in Shanghai. The course is delivered by SBC’s international team of academics and will give you a sound basis in the subjects of Business, Economics, Finance, and Marketing amongst other relevant disciplines.

There are few better places in the world to study Business Management than in Shanghai. The city is at the epicentre of the Chinese economy and home to thousands of international corporations. Students will have opportunities to communicate and interact with the local business community and will graduate with a strong understanding of how international business works.

Degree Duration: 3 Years (4 with foundation)

Core Modules Include: Strategic Planning, Business Consultancy, Marketing in a Global Context, Leadership in Contemporary Organisations, and Implementing Strategy and Change.

BA (Hons) Events Management

SBC and the University of Huddersfield have been offering Events Management programmes since 2008. This course is for you if you are interested in building a career in the exciting and fast-paced events sector. From rock concerts and the Olympic Games to local weddings and store openings, events managers are needed in various industries throughout the world. If you value creativity and enjoy planning, communicating and managing a team, this course will be suited to you.

Shanghai is the perfect place to study Events Management. Shanghai has some of the largest conference facilities and exhibition centres in the world. Several international trade shows are hosted in the city every week. Also, Shanghai hosts various sporting events throughout the year such as Masters Tennis, Diamond League Athletics, X-Games and the Shanghai Formula 1. Events like these have provided work experience for our students in the past and offer incoming students a chance to build an exciting career in the events and hospitably industry.

Degree Duration: 3 Years (4 with foundation)

Core Modules Include: Conference and Exhibition Management, Stadium and Arena Management, Creativity and Innovation in Context, and Global Events and Festivals.

BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering

At SBC, Mechanical Engineering is a programme delivered in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University. Students studying on the programme will gain the initial educational requirements for a professional engineer alongside a range of relevant transferable and engineering management skills.

Mechanical Engineering plays an important role in Shanghai. The city is home to many of the world’s largest manufacturing firms and annually hosts the Shanghai Auto Show, the largest automobile exhibition in the world. Currently, Shanghai is considered one of the most important locations in the global automobile industry. We believe that students who study in this environment will be inspired and motivated to succeed as professional engineers.

Degree Duration: 4 Years (3 without foundation)

Core Modules Include: Mechanical Principles, Drawing and Design, Industrial Automation, Control and Instrumentation, and Engineering Mathematics.

BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Electrical and Electronic Engineering is delivered in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University. Students studying this programme at SBC will gain core engineering principles as well as specialisations in computation, software and electrical design. The programme aims to produce graduates with a breadth of knowledge and understanding in electronics and control engineering, engineering management and teamwork to enable them to rapidly assume technical leadership and management roles.

Shanghai is a leading global hub for many industries related to electrical and electronic engineering. The city hosts major companies that lead the world in 5G technology, cybercrime prevention and automation.

Degree Duration: 4 Years (3 without foundation)

Core Modules Include: Industrial Automation, Control System Design, Engineering Mathematics, Linear Electronics, and Quality Systems.

USST Dual Degree

Starting in September 2020, SBC and USST are offering students a fantastic and unique opportunity to earn both a British degree and a Chinese degree. If international students have a strong desire to learn Chinese they can be dual enrolled. This means that after four years of study at SBC, students can earn both a British degree certificate from either the University of Huddersfield, Liverpool John Moores University or Sheffield Hallam University, and a Chinese degree certificate from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology(USST). SBC and USST will provide Chinese lessons and language learning equipment to all students enrolled on a dual degree programme. If students are unable to achieve a Chinese language level of HSK 4 they will not be eligible to graduate from USST. Students will be allowed a total of 6 years to achieve HSK 4. Should the student fail to do this they will still be able to graduate with a British degree.

Accommodation

SBC’s International Student Accommodation is situated on campus. Being in central Shanghai, students living in theaccommodation benefit from being in close proximity to one of the most international, cosmopolitan and vibrant communities in China. SBC’s international accommodation offers incoming students a choice of either 2 person rooms or 4 person rooms. SBC’s campus, including the accommodation block, has a 24 hour security service which ensures the safety of all our students.

Learning Chinese

International Students who are not enrolled in the dual degree programme are entitled to free Chinese lessons. They are not compulsory and are not credited towards the degree.SBC’s Chinese programme follows the HSK system, and students starting SBC with no Chinese could achieve HSK 2 within the first year at SBC. Two years at SBC would allow students to achieve an understanding of Chinese equivalent to HSK 3, and three to four years at SBC would allow students to obtain an HSK 4 Level of Chinese. HSK 4 is the grade needed to enter a Chinese state university and demonstrates a high level of fluency.

Career Development

At SBC, training and expertise is offered to all students who would like to find an internship or legal employment in Shang-hai. Our Career Service Team have links with top companies in Shanghai, many of whom send representatives to talk to students on campus. In previous years SBC graduates have gone on to work for; Jebson Motors, Huawei, KPMG, Standard Chartered, PWC, Saatchi & Saatchi, Accenture and many more.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) are English classes that improve a student’s English ability in the areas of academic reading, writing, speaking and listening.
