"Regardless of privilege, we are proving thatnature, connection and community areaccessible to everyone, wherever we are, even inthe heart of the city.”

The year started like most others. Learning and growingin the outdoors during fall and winter weekends. Wecelebrated the holidays together on a very snowySaturday in December and March Break programs werefinalized and ready to go. Plans for Summer 2020 werewell underway. Forty new Year 1 participants hadcompleted their applications, and an epic LIT trip downthe Missinaibi River was anticipated.

On March 12, that all changed. New COVID protocolsmeant Trails was unable to provide transportation orovernight accommodation to our participants. Theprogram team immediately pivoted, providing ongoingsupport and community while re-imagining whatsummer camp could look like. With in-personfundraising events cancelled, we launched a COVID ReliefFund and you responded, with over $20,000 raised todate.

In July and August, Trails City Day Camps empoweredyouth to explore Toronto’s urban wild and experienceessential developmental challenges as they canoed on theHumber River and spotted wildlife on hikes inMorningside Park. Families were welcomed to the TrailsLakeside on the weekends to experience "camp" with oneanother. This fall, we are resuming programs at TrailsLakeside, engaging our participants in outdoor challengesand experiences for one Saturday each month.

YEAR IN REVIEW

"Before Trails, I had never even seen stars orfireflies. I was very quiet and to myself, Ididn’t know how to communicate or explainmy mental and family issues. No matter whatsituation I’m in, I can escape once a month toa place where I feel accepted. Trails taughtme I can help not just myself, but to pay itforward to others in my community."

Vanessa, Year 4
