HOUSTON’S DRAFT RESULTS: The Astros selected four players in the 2020 MLB Draft (June 10-11), which was shortened from 40 rounds to five rounds...Houston selected four college players, including shortstop Shay Whitcomb (5th round), outfielder Zach Daniels (4th round), and right-handed pitcher Tyler Brown (3rd round)...with their first selection in the draft at pick #72 (second round compensation), the Astros took high school right-handed pitcher Alex Santos II.

UNDRAFTED FREE AGENTS: Beginning this past Sunday, MLB teams were allowed to sign undrafted free agent players to contracts...the Astros have signed six players as undrafted free agents thus far, including three right-handed pitchers, two infielders and one outfielder.

A BRONX TALE: The Astros used their first pick in the 2020 MLB Draft on Alex Santos II, an 18-year-old right-handed pitcher from Mount Saint Michael Academy High School in the Bronx, N.Y...Santos was selected by Houston with the 72nd overall pick in the draft, but was rated by Baseball America as the No. 45 overall prospect in the 2020 draft class.

ARMS RACE: The 2020 MLB Draft marked the ninth time in Astros franchise history that the club used its first pick in the draft on a high school right-handed pitcher (Alex Santos II)...also 2017 (Forrest Whitley, Alamo Heights HS, San Antonio, TX), 2003 (Jason Hirsh, California Lutheran HS), 1995 (Tony McKnight, Arkansas HS), 1989 (Jeff Juden, Salem HS), 1986 (Ryan Bowen, Hanford HS), 1970 (Randy Scarbery, Roosevelt HS), 1969 (J.R. Richard, Lincoln HS, Ruston, LA), and 1966 (Wayne Twitchell, Woodrow Wilson HS).

CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE: With their third round selection in the 2020 MLB Draft, the Astros nabbed RHP Tyler Brown, the electric-armed closer from the defending national champion Vanderbilt Commodores...Brown set a Vanderbilt single-season school record with 17 saves during the 2019 championship season for the Commodores...also led the SEC and ranked second in the nation in saves.

DRAFTING FROM D-2: The Astros selected one of the top collegiate hitters in the 2020 draft in SS Shay Whitcomb, a .333 hitter in abbreviated action at Division II UC San Diego this year...Whitcomb cemented his prospect stock in the summer of 2019 with an impressive showing in the Cape Cod Baseball League, the top wood bat collegiate summer league in the nation...his eight home runs were a CCBL record by a Division II player, and were one shy of the league leader, Nick Gonzales, who was selected seventh overall in this year’s draft

ALL IN THE FAMILY: The Astros signed SS J.C. Correa to an undrafted free agent contract...the brother of Astros All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa, J.C. was drafted by Houston in the 2018 and 2019 MLB Drafts, but opted to finish up his collegiate career at Lamar University.

TEXAS TIES: Undrafted free agent signing 2B J.C. Correa played at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, while RHP Kyle Gruller played at Houston Baptist University and graduated from Cypress Ridge High School...1B/LF Peter Zimmermann played at Minute Maid Park this Spring in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
