WHAT IS GIS?Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is

an integrated computer system that links

topography, demographic, utility network,

imagery, and other data geographically. This

system allows for storage, spatial analysis, and

querying of data for accurate and efficient City

decision making.

The City of Rockwall’s GIS is a decision-making

tool that enables access to data, maps, and

images. This promotes innovative solutions

and improves customer service to citizens.

The GIS Department Staff uses GIS to assist all

departments within the city. GIS completed

over 530 core projects for 2019-20, making it

one of the busiest years since the start of GIS at

the City of Rockwall in 2007.

The City of Rockwall currently has 5 Trimble GPS units that will allow gathering of feature locations from sub-meter to

centimeter accuracy GPS supports the accurate mapping and modeling of the physical world — from terrain to streets and buildings to utilities and other resources.

Features measured with GPS can be displayed on maps and in geographic information systems (GIS) that store, manipulate, and display geographically referenced data.
