UPTO 18kgs
Leaves that are not in paper yard waste bags will not be picked up.
Each bag/bundle must weigh less than 18 kgs (40 pounds).
Tie your brush into bundles no longer than 3ft, and with no material larger than 2” diameter.
See our website for setout limits.
Roll tops of the bag shut. Rolling the top sheds the rain and snow and prevents leaves from falling or blowing out.
Only use paper yard waste bags. Paper yard waste bags are available at most local hardware stores and building centres.
Please do not include: garbage, litter, animal feces, or soil.

Leaf & Yard Waste Collection Schedule
Rules & Tips
Northumberland County provides a monthly pick up of leaf & yard waste right at your curb on a routine schedule, from Mid-April to Mid-December. See our website for setout limits.
Please have your brush, leaves and grass clippings out at the curb by no later than 7 a.m. on the MONDAY of your designated set-out week, not on your garbage/recycling collection day. It will be collected between Monday and Friday of your designated set-out week. Leaf and yard waste needs to be in kraft paper bags and brush needs to be bundled. Trees and limbs that exceed 3 feet in length and are greater than 2” in diameter, need to be disposed of at one of the County Waste Disposal Facilities (see back section of calendar for location details).
What do these icons mean?
When you see this image, it means that collection of garbage, recycling, and green bin bumps ahead one day due to a holiday. This could pertain to a full week or partial week depending on when holidays fall on the calendar.
This image notifies you that the Cobourg or Seymour Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste Depots are open. Remember you can now drop off HHEW year-round at the Brighton and Bewdley Community Recycling Centres.
This image notifies you of the setout date for leaf and yard waste collection depending on what Area you are in (see map opposite). While most setout days land on a Monday, some land on a Tuesday due to a holiday. Please refer to the opposite section for more information on the Leaf and Yard Waste program. See our website for setout limits.
The criteria for defining what electronic waste is, has changed. Previously, electronic waste referred to items such as computers, cellphones, video game systems, etc. Now, anything with a cord is considered electronic waste. This includes lamps, toasters, coffee makers, and much more. This does not include refrigerators, stoves and Freon containing items. Those can still be dropped off for no charge, but they cannot be accepted as electronic waste.
Electronic Waste can be dropped off at any Community Recycling Centre, or during HHW depot days in Cobourg. For more information on these sites please flip to the back of the calendar.
Green bin and blue/grey box collection has begun! Please remember: Papers and paper packaging go in the grey box
Plastic and metal containers including milk/juice cartons and coffee cups (no lid) go in the blue box
Food waste goes in the green bin – do not use plastic bags! Please see your green bin information that was delivered with your green bin on what types of liners are accepted.
Only two bags of garbage are allowed per week. Each bag must have a bag tag on it.
Have your waste to the curb by 7am on collection day! Any questions? Call 1-866-293-8379 or email [email protected]

Christmas Tree Collection Call your local Municipality for inquiries about Christmas tree collection in your area, or check your newspaper for details. Please remove all tinsel, decorations and plastic before putting your Christmas tree out for collection. Community Recycling
Centres closed today.
Coffee
When the temperature dropsbelow 0°C, bag tags become finicky
and less sticky. Please affix the tag end-to-end on the neck of the bag.
Help waste collectors do their job Please place your waste & recycling on the ground, near the curb and not on top of snow banks. Our drivers make over 1000 stops in a day and lifting items off snow banks is a safety risk and slows them down considerably.
Rinsing MattersPlease rinse out all food waste from your plastic and metal containers before recycling. If food waste is left in jars, cans, and bottles there is a good chance those items will not be recycled.

Things that tangle, such as video & cassette tapes, fishing line, string, Christmas lights, garden hoses, plastic straps, etc. are NOT RECYCLABLE and cause havoc with the equipment at our Material Recovery Facility. If you cannot pass these items on to someone else, place them in your regular garbage.

Keep it looseRemember that recyclables must be loose and sorted properly into your blue and grey boxes. There are only two materials accepted in bags:
1. Your soft plastic bags must be contained inside one plastic bag, and tied. This bag of bags can then be put into or beside your blue box.
2. Shredded paper must be in a clear or clear blue bag, tied and put into or beside your grey box.
Put a lid on it!There are many ways to keep your material inside your boxes on windy days such as stacking your blue box on top of your grey box, setting out the day of your collection by 7am, and keeping material below the top of the bin. However, if you would like a lid for your bins, they are available for $3 each(price subject to change) at our MRF in Grafton, or main office in Cobourg.

Easter Sunday
Litter cleanup weekThe 12th annual Mayors’ Keep the County Clean Challenge is a week-long litter cleanup campaign that takes place throughout all of Northumberland. This is a great opportunity to get a group of friends together to make your little corner of Canada a little bit cleaner.
Visit your area municipal office and register your team or yourself to pick-up litter. You will be supplied with bags, vests, and gloves.
In 2019, over 2,989 residents volunteered, and picked up over 19,450 kg of litter. This was our biggest event ever. Will you help us break that record?
When you’re done, you are invited to the MRF in Grafton on Saturday April 25th to explore the recycling plant, grab some BBQ, and some takeaway items. It’s good family fun, and you might learn something new!

Keep your collector and sorter safeWe want all of our staff to finish each day safely, and a lot of that depends on you. Please follow these tips in properly disposing of potentially dangerous materials.
Sharps, including all parts of a syringe, should be taken back to your pharmacy to be disposed of properly. These are never accepted in the recycling or garbage. Contact your local health unit, or visit HealthSteward.ca or call 1-844-535-8889 to find your nearest take-back location.
IV tubes and bags, bandages, wrap and various other medical wastes do not belong in the recycling. Please put all medical waste in the garbage.
Camping propane cylinders can explode in trucks and in balers at the Material Recovery Facility. NEVER put any type of compressed cylinder, empty or not, in the recycling or garbage. They must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

Flatten your boxesFlatten, bundle and tie corrugated cardboard boxes in 30” x 30” x 10“ dimensions, and place between your blue and grey box.
Blue/Grey Box tipsNow that sorting is part of the weekly routine in recycling, below are some tips to keep in mind.
Blue Box• Rinse your recyclables. Dirty
plastic or glass containers do not get recycled. Rinsing is important!
• Metal lids on glass jars should be removed, and put separately in the blue box.
• Do not crush cans or bottles.
• Keep material loose. Do not bag materials.
Grey Box• Flatten and tie or bundle boxes. This saves a lot
of space in the grey box!

How to Dispose of Medical Waste, Needles & SyringesNEVER throw needles or syringes in the garbage or recycling. They can pose a serious threat to curious children, pets and Waste Management Staff.
Pharmacies accept used needles and syringes. Please call your pharmacy to confirm packaging requirements before dropping them off. These are never accepted in the recycling or garbage. Trip Tips for the Community Recycling Centres
1. Got needles? Bring them in a sealed container (i.e. 2 litre pop bottle). For safety reasons, do not bring them to a Community Recycling Centre loose! We will not handle loose needles. 2. Got Batteries? Sort the rechargeable from the non-rechargeable. 3. Got liquid or Powder waste? Bring them in a sealed container. 4. Got gasoline or Oil waste? For safety reasons, we cannot empty gasoline, oil, or antifreeze into large drums and therefore, the container you bring it in cannot be returned to you. Oil, gasoline, and antifreeze need to be in pails less than 20L (5 gallons) in size. We cannot accept any items in drums. 5. No Hazardous Waste from Commercial/Industrial/Businesses.
