matchup notes“4 DOWNS” WITH THE ORANGE

Syracuse is the only repeat opponent on Liber-ty's 2020 schedule from the 2019 season. Since the Orange spoiled Hugh Freeze's Flames debut with a 24-0 shutout at Williams Stadium on Aug. 31, 2019, Syracuse is just 5-10. Conversely, Liberty is 12-4 since that setback, including its

current six-game winning streak. The Flames are the lone non-conference opponent on Syracuse's 2020 schedule.

For the second straight week, Liberty is re-ceiving votes in the Coaches Poll. After gar-nering their fi rst-ever FBS Top 25 vote Oct. 4, the Flames earned eight votes Sunday. Liberty (Joshua Mack & Malik Willis) and Duke are the only two FBS teams with two players who have

tallied 340+ rushing yards in 2020. Syracuse will face the duos in consecutive weeks, after the Blue Devils' Deon Jack-son and Mateo Durant rushed for 332 yards last Saturday.

The Flames are scheduled to face three ACC opponents during the same season for the fi rst time in program history, also including visits to Virginia Tech (Nov. 7) and NC State (Nov. 21). Liberty is the only non-conference team sched-uled to match up with three ACC foes in 2020.

The Flames are also facing a trio of Conference USA teams.

Turnovers will be a key stat to watch, as Syra-cuse has forced four or more turnovers during each of its last two games and ranks No. 1 na-tionally with 14 takeaways in 2020. Meanwhile, the Flames have recorded three takeaways against each of their last two opponents. Last

year, Syracuse forced four Liberty turnovers.

LAST MEETING WITH SYRACUSE

AUG. 31, 2019NO. 22 SYRACUSE 24, LIBERTY 0LYNCHBURG, VA. (WILLIAMS STADIUM)

• The fi rst FBS Top 25 team ever to visit Williams Stadium, No. 22 Syracuse opened the 2019 season with a 24-0 shut-out of Liberty.

• Making his Liberty head coaching debut, Hugh Freeze coached from a hospital bed in the booth.

• Syracuse forced four turnovers and limited Liberty to 66 total off ensive yards during the second and third quarters, allowing the Orange to extend the lead from 3-0 to 17-0.

• The Orange rushed for 192 yards and three TDs, while holding Liberty to -4 yards on the ground.

A Liberty Win Would ...

• Mark the Flames' fi rst-ever win over an ACC opponent (in their ninth try).

• Be the Flames' fi rst-ever victory when playing in New York (in their ninth try).

• Give the Flames their fi rst 5-0 start to a season since 2008 and their third 5-0 start in program history (also 1989).

• Mark the fi rst season the Flames have won their fi rst two road games since 2008.

• Represent the Flames' seventh consecutive win, dating back to last season. It would extend Liberty's longest win-ning streak of the FBS era and be its longest since a pro-gram-record 11-game winning streak spanning Oct. 20, 2007-Oct. 11, 2008.

• Be the Flames' second victory all-time when playing in a dome (also Oct. 3, 2015 at Georgia State in the Georgia Dome).

LIBERTY FOOTBALL BY THE NUMBERS

6: DT Ralfs Rusins needs six tackles to become the fi rst current Flame with 100 career stops.

100: RB Joshua Mack's next 100-yard rushing game will be his seventh as a Flame, tying him with DJ Abnar (2012-15) for 10th place on Liberty's all-time list for most 100-yard games. FBS MILESTONE CHECKLIST KEEPING GOOD COMPANY

Liberty is one of only three FBS programs to lose a 3,000-yard passer, 1,000-yard rusher and 1,000-yard receiver from the 2019 season, joining defending national champion LSU and College Football Playoff semifi nalist Oklahoma in that club.QB Stephen Calvert (3,663 yards), RB Frankie Hickson (1,041 yards), and WR Antonio Gandy-Golden (1,396 yards) have all graduated, and each reached those milestones each of the last two seasons.LSU loses Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow (5,671 yards), RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (1,414) and WRs Ja'Marr Chase (1,780 yards) and Justin Jeff erson (1,540 yards).Oklahoma needs to replace QB Jalen Hurts (3,851 passing/1,298 rushing yards), RB Kennedy Brooks (1,011 rushing yards) and WR CeeDee Lamb (1,327 yards).

ACTIVE LEADERSSenior RB Joshua Mack ranks third among all active FBS running backs with 3,198 career rushing yards. He rushed for 2,047 yards with Maine from 2016 through 2017. Mack fi nished second on the Flames with 792 yards last season, his fi rst at Liberty, also scoring seven touchdowns. Mack had 10 100-yard games while at Maine, and has posted six 100-yard rushing contests as a Flame.Clemson's Travis Etienne leads with 4,430 career yards, followed by UAB's Spencer Brown (3,572), Mack (3,198) Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard (3,173) and Missouri's Larry Rountree (3,018).Sophomore Shedro Louis is sixth among FBS active leaders in career kickoff return average at 26.6,with Houston's Marcus Jones (28.1) leading. Dominic Bolden (28.8 - 2005-08) holds Liberty's career kickoff return average record.

WATCH OUT

Redshirt junior QB Malik Willis burst onto the scene in the season opener at Western Kentucky on Sept. 19, rushing for a program quarterback-record 168 yards and three touch-downs in the 30-24 win.

Willis was then named to the Davey O'Brien Week 3 Great 8 list, which featured the top eight quarterback performances..

By virtue of his inclusion, Willis will be added to the Midseason Watch List and will be eligible to be voted a semifi nalist for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

After Liberty's win over FIU on Sept. 26, Willis was named one of eight quarterbacks as Manning Award "Stars of the Week."

NEW KID ON THE BLOCKLast year, Liberty became the 130th fully certifi ed FBS team in the nation after successfully completing a two-year FBS Reclassifi cation process and becomingfully eligible for all postseason bowl games. The Flames became the fi fth team to appear in a bowl game during their fi rst season of full bowl eligibility after moving up to the FBS level. By winning the FBC Cure Bowl, Liberty joined Appalachian State (2015 Camellia Bowl) and Georgia Southern (2015 GoDaddy Bowl) as the only three teams to win a bowl game during their fi rst season of full bowl eligibility.Liberty is hoping to follow in Appalachian State's footsteps, as the Mountaineers have won bowl games in each of their fi rst fi ve seasons after transitioning to FBS status.

BOWL AGREEMENT

2020-25 - Just prior to kickoff of the 2019 season, Liberty and ESPN Events announced a new secondary bowl game agree-ment for the 2020 to 2025 bowl game cycle. During that six-year span, ESPN Events could place the Flames in one of six bowl games operated by the network:

Boca Raton Bowl (Boca Raton, Fla.)Camellia Bowl (Montgomery, Ala.)Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (Boise, Idaho)Frisco Bowl (Frisco, Texas)Myrtle Beach Bowl (Conway, S.C.)New Mexico Bowl (Albuquerque, N.M.)

WINNING TRADITIONLiberty has won six or more games in each of the last 14 sea-sons, beginning in the 2006 campaign. Liberty is one of just 14 Division I football teams, including 12 FBS programs, to win six or more games each of the last 14 seasons. Ohio State would qualify, but vacated wins during that stretch.Liberty joins Boise State, LSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Penn State and Wisconsin as the only FBS teams without a losing season in the last 14 years.Additional Division I teams with six or more wins every year from 2006 to present include Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Virginia Tech, in addition to FCS teams Jacksonville State, James Madison and McNeese State.

OH BROTHERRedshirt freshmen Carl and Carlos Poole are twins. There are 53 FBS teams who have sets of brothers on their rosters.

The last time Liberty had two brothers play in the same sea-son was 2012, when Bryant and Dylan Lewellyn and Chase and Dallas Griffi ths all appeared in games. The Lewellyns both played in all 11 games that season. The 2012 season was also the last time Liberty had twins on its roster, in freshmen Ken-dall and Kendrick Couamin, but neither saw playing time that year.

Dec. 21, 2019 at Exploria Stadium (Orlando, Fla.)

23 16 In a season that saw the offense grab most of the attention with its gaudy numbers, it was the Liberty defense that showed up in its big-gest game. A stout defensive effort led Liberty to a 23-16 win over Georgia Southern, Dec. 21, in the 2019 FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl. The win capped off the most memorable year in program history. Liberty completed its FBS reclassification process in August, received its first-ever bowl game invitation on Dec. 8 and walked away from Exploria Stadium with a bowl game trophy in hand. With the victory, the Flames became the third FBS transitioning team in NCAA history to win a bowl game during their first season at the FBS level. Flames defensive end Jessie Lemonier was named the 2019 Cure Bowl MVP, finishing the game with eight tackles, including two sacks.
