SPENGLER, SINCE 1907SPENGLER's history is inextricably linked to the innovative and visionary spirit of Emile Spengler, its founder.

In the early 1900s, Emile Spengler, a renowned industrialist with a particular interest in medicine, joined forces with influential

20th century French cardiologists, professors Henri Vaquez and Charles Laubry, in developing a new device for measuring

blood pressure.

In Paris in 1907 they managed to develop the sphygmomanometer and to revolutionise medical diagnostics, taking it into a new

era and offering unprecedented precision and performance.

Even today, 110 years after this revolution, the sphygmomanometer remains the benchmark for measuring blood pressure.

Quite a feat!

More than any other brand, SPENGLER has revolutionised the history of medical diagnosis and remains the reference in the

field.

2020, THE BIRTH OF A GROUPInitiated in 2019 and materialised by a geographical relocation in December of the same year, the purpose of this merger is to

create an ambitious group that looks to the future and is capable of meeting the challenges of our changing markets.

Symbolised by this signature that respects both our companies, the objective of the SPENGLER HOLTEX group is to strengthen

both brands individually.

INVENTING THE MEDICINE OF THE FUTURE

Innovation is part of the SPENGLER DNA. Ever since 1907 and the invention of the tensiometer, SPENGLER has been innovating

and pushing back the boundaries of diagnosis. The SPENGLER HOLTEX group will have increased innovation capacities to take

on future projects: remote medicine, new diagnosis technology.

The SPENGLER HOLTEX group also has increased resources to comply with new standards and future directives: new tests,

THE SPENGLER INSTITUTE IN 2020:

A partnership has been created between Spengler

and the FRHTA (Foundation for Research on Arterial

Hypertension), represented by the president of the

foundation, Professor Xavier Girerd, a cardiologist at

Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital.

Together, we imagine the designs for the

instruments of the future, which will provide health professionals involved in

screening and monitoring of arterial hypertension with the most precise data

possible.

The Foundation for Research on Arterial Hypertension (FRHTA), founded in

2006, aims to promote research in the area of arterial hypertension. As part

of the ‘AHT 2025’ programme, the FRHTA provides support to the inventors

of innovative technological solutions which will improve AHT management

among the one and a half billion patients who will be treated for the condition

around the world in 2025.

"In 2018, the French AHT Society recommended the use of electronic

tensiometers for the diagnosis and monitoring of AHT. As a cardiologist and

president of the Foundation for Research on Arterial Hypertension, my mission

today is to assist health professionals to change their daily practices with

regard to measuring blood pressure, the symbolic act of medical practice. In

my view, it is essential to have faith in the measurements provided when using

next-generation electronic tensiometers. Spengler’s reputation throughout the

history of blood pressure measurement enables us to place our trust in the

measurements supplied by the digital blood pressure monitors which they

provide for health professionals."

It enables discussion and research in collaboration with a group of professional composed of doctors,

specialists, nurses, students to work on the diagnostic tools of tomorrow.

THE SPENGLER INSTITUTE

Launched several months ago, the development of our new

range of stethoscopes was led by engineers from the École

Centrale, as well as the acoustics laboratory in Marseille, one

of the largest in the world.

Together, we studied each component and material, analysing

their impact on acoustic quality.

STETHOSCOPES PROJECT

The project is based on an observation made by the Spengler

Institute: using the right size of cuff depending on the patient

morphology. Our engineers and the design teams at Studio

360 have developed two revolutionary ideas:

- A new magnetic connection system allowing the cuff to be

changed very quickly;

- A new shape of cuff, making it easier to read the cuff size

index.

THE MECHANISM

At the heart of sphygmomanometers, SPENGLER

mechanisms control the movement of the needle.

As in high-precision watch-making, each SPENGLER

Consisting of a "high precision" inseparable diaphragm/

movement assembly, SPENGLER mechanisms are

COMFORTThe materials:SPENGLER's history sums up this moto. At SPENGLER our precision design is always carried out with patient comfort to the fore. As such, we place the utmost importance in the materials used for our cuffs.

• Polycotton:Made of a combination of cotton and polyester, the polycotton cuff is the fruit of extensive SPENGLER research and experience.Offering unique comfort and a soft touch, this cuff is ideal for paediatric and general use. The addition of polyester offers ease of maintenance and quick drying for regular washing.

• Oxford Nylon:The Oxford Nylon Cuff offers great strength and durability. It is perfect for intensive use.

• Nylon :The Nylon cuff is woven with a finer mesh than Oxford nylon making it less resistant but offering more comfort.

• TPU :Cuffs made from TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) are unique in that they do not have an inner pocket and are thus lighter. Very easy to maintain, they are recommended for intensive use.

UNCOMPROMISING COMFORT AND PRECISION

MAINTENANCE OF CUFFS AND BLADDERS

Washing:• Cotton or nylon cuffs:

Machine wash the cuffs, with fasteners closed, at 30-35°C. Do not spin.

• TPU : Wash with warm soapy water.

• Inflatable bladder and tubing: Seal the end of the tube with a clamp before washing in warm soapy water or immerse in a suitable disinfectant solution. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

The cardiovascular system is composed of the heart and the vessels (arteries and veins). The heart is a pump that circulates blood through the vessels. Each heartbeat causes a pressure change on the arterial walls also known as arterial pressure.

HYPERTENSION DEFINITIONSFor a subject at rest and awake: a systolic pressure of 120 or less and a diastole pressure of 80 or less is normal. A SYS pressure

of over 140 or a DIA pressure of over 90 indicates hypertension. As arterial pressure is very often variable hypertension cannot be diagnosed from a single measurement.

To confirm a hypertension diagnosis, specialists propose self-measurements using an automatic tensiometer or ambulatory blood

pressure monitoring (ABPM) using a Holter blood pressure monitor used to measure blood pressure during a day of activity and

during sleep.

The hypertension diagnosis is confirmed for self-measurement if the average is over 135 for SYS pressure or over 85 for DIA

pressure. The hypertension diagnosis is confirmed if the average ABPM pressure is over 130 for SYS pressure or over 80 for

DIA pressure.

For subjects over the age of 80, the hypertension diagnosis is confirmed if the SYS pressure is

over 150 (during an examination) or 140 (self-measurement or ABPM).

BLOOD PRESSURE IS VARIABLEBlood pressure, which reflects how the cardiovascular system works, varies depending on

physical activity and/or psychological factors. Blood pressure is low when sleeping and rises

during physical activity or psychological stress. By convention, it is the blood pressure at rest that

defines hypertension.

UNDERSTANDING HYPERTENSION


In most cases, hypertension is caused by the loss of artery flexibility and results in the artery walls thickening. The ageing of the

cardiovascular system is therefore the main cause of hypertension. Many factors favour the loss or artery flexibility and thickening

of their walls: excess salt consumption, weight gain, sedentary lifestyles, diabetes, smoking, increased cholesterol LDL.

The seriousness of hypertension is linked to the importance of diseases that impact the arteries (arteriosclerosis and/or

atherosclerosis) and complications that can impact the brain, the heart and the kidneys in the event of thrombosis in the arteries

that irrigate them.

In the brain: a stroke by ischemia (occlusion) and more rarely brain haemorrhage;

In the heart: myocardial infarction or left ventricle failure (cardiac insufficiency);

In the arteries: aortic aneurysm and arteritis of the lower limbs (atherosclerosis);

In the kidneys: chronic kidney insufficiency (more frequent when combined with diabetes).

Sometime, blood pressure increases quickly causing a “hypertensive push” - leading to symptoms: fainting, dizziness, headaches,

visual disorders.

If the increased pressure is combined with breathing difficulties, chest pain, paralysis, speech impairment, a “hypertensive

emergency” is likely requiring urgent medical attention.

Hypertension has long been an insidious disorder, often without symptoms, which is considered to be a cardiovascular disease

risk factor.

The seriousness of hypertension is demonstrated by the monitoring of persons suffering from high blood pressure who have not

been screened, or who are known but not treated, which indicates that a cardiovascular complication has a high probability of

occurring within 10 years of the start of the hypertension.

While light intensity plays a key role in medical diagnosis,

colourimetry is also crucial.

Light being an electromagnetic wave, just like UV and

infrared, it is the power of this wave which determines the

colour.

• Blue: Very close to UV, blue, or cold light, comes from

a high intensity wave. An observation with predominantly

blue light will have the advantage of offering great clarity

of observation. However blue light, will result in dazzle,

deteriorate natural colours and reduce contrasts.

• Red: Red light has a lower frequency wave. This warm

colour has the advantage of preserving contrasts, but the

Apnoea diving is an unusual, almost mystical, sport in which the athletes access the unknown world of the depths. But apnoea diving is also and above all a demanding sport in which chance has even less place than in other sports, and generates immediate and serious consequences

1/ WHY SPENGLER, WHAT IS YOUR VIEW OF THIS HISTORIC BRAND?I'm passionate about collective memory and working with Spengler takes me back to the history of tensiometers. As an ex para-commando military doctor, I can remember using Spengler pump-cuff type tensiometers bearing the names of 2 famous French cardiologists, Dr Henri VAQUEZ and Dr Charles LAUBRY. I now know that in 1907, M. Emile SPENGLER, the French industrial, had worked with them to develop that tensiometer. So it’s special for me to use last generation Spengler tensiometers in the field! Many thanks to this historic company for supporting our cutting edge medical safety efforts for deep apnoea diving as well as our research programmes.

2/ WHY USE SPENGLER OXIMETERS ON APNOEA DIVERS?The encounter with SPENGLER came from the need to find portable pulse oximeters for athletes who self-check when they leave the water as well as for the doctors who secure the deep apnoea diving championships. I wanted to find a partner for the devices, but one that was above all capable of supporting us in the understanding of apnoea diver pathologies.

Vertical apnoea diving is still a young sport. Going back a little in time: at the start there were Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maïorca who were immortalised by Luc Besson in his film “Le Grand Bleu”. Between 1985 and 1990 apnoea divers, who were still few and far between in the world, achieved new performances, new records. They are passionate. Claude Chapuis, a previous static apnoea diving record holder is now considered to be the spiritual father of apnoea diving in Nice, France and worldwide.

My encounter with this passionate and extreme pioneer can only lead to permanent attempts to always better understand apnoea diving and make it safe. This inevitably leads to observations and studies to better understand the cardiopulmonary stresses and effects of hypoxia on the brain. At our hyperbar and sub-aquatic medicine department at Nice university hospital, we are therefore going to work with Claude and take measurements using the pulse oximeters that Spengler has made available to us in parallel to specific lung examinations such as echography and/or lung scans to look for specific images of alveolar-capillary barrier suffering in order to better understand a pathology that can be dangerous: immersion pulmonary oedema.

On the French or world championships:I have been taking part in securing all the apnoea diving championships and the medical safety of our deep apnoea divers since 2014, which has resulted in our having a cutting edge cardiopulmonary resuscitation and apnoea diving accident monitoring technical platform. We have included many high quality instruments on this platform, stethoscopes and tensiometers, even the SPENGLER pulse oximeter which is justifiably considered to be the reference in the field.
