2020-21 San Jose State Men’s Basketball Game Nos. 13-14 | vs. New Mexico | Jan. 21-23, 2021

Jean Prioleau (pronounced Zhaun Pre-low), whose resume includes 11 NCAA Division I post-season appearances in 18 seasons as an assistant coach, is entering his fourth season as San José State University men’s basketball head coach in 2020-21.

Prioleau joined San José State in August 2017 after seven successful seasons as an assistant and associate head coach at the University of Colorado. The Buffaloes won 149 games, had five 20-win seasons and appeared in post-season play every year. Colorado played in the NCAA Tournament in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016, the NIT in 2011 and 2017 and the CBI in 2015.

Prioleau had his most successful season to date in 2019-20 beginning with a signature win in the season opener on the road against 18-point favorite Hofstra. The 79-71 victory was the Spartans’ first road win since 2017 and first win on the East Coast since 2001. SJSU went on to win three conference home games, including a 70-68 victory over Nevada, giving the Spartans their first win over the Wolfpack in five years.

Besides the unprecedented sustained success of Colorado basketball, the Buffs also had four NBA draft choices during Prioleau’s seven seasons. Most recently, All-American guard Derrick White was the San Antonio Spurs first-round selection in the 2017 NBA Draft. Guard Spencer Dinwiddie, a member of the Brooklyn Nets, was the 38th overall selection by the Detroit Pistons in 2014. Swingman Andre Roberson, a 2013 first-round draft choice of the Minnesota Timberwolves, completed his fourth season with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Guard Alec Burks, the 12th overall pick by Utah in the 2011 NBA Draft, completed his sixth season with the Jazz.

Prioleau graduated in 1992 from Fordham University with a degree in physics. He finished his college basketball career second on the school’s all-time list in steals and assists and fifth in scoring with 1,442 points. He was a two-time second-team All-Pa-triot League player, was named to the 1989 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Rookie team and was part of the Rams’ 1991 and 1992 Patriot League champion-ship teams. Prioleau was inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.

Born in New York City and raised in Teaneck, New Jersey, the 47-year-old Prioleau entered the coaching profession in 2000 after a playing career that included tryouts with the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers of the NBA and experiences in the Conti-nental Basketball Association (CBA), the United States Basketball League (USBL) and overseas in Turkey, Italy and Switzerland.

He began his college coaching career in 1999-2000 at his alma mater. Prioleau then spent five seasons at Wichita State (2001-05), the 2006 season at Marquette, two seasons at Iowa State (2007-08) and the 2009 and 2010 seasons at TCU before heading to Colorado. Wichita State played in the 2003, 2004 and 2005 NIT’s. The 2006 Mar-quette team qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

vs. Colorado State | L, 61-88 | Jan. 16, 2021

» The Spartans fell in both games vs. the Rams. In game one, Richard Washington was unstoppable with 35 points, the most by any player in a MW conference game this season.

» Game two saw a more balanced attack as four scorers finished in double figures. Washington and Sebastian Mendoza led the way with 15 points each.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP SCOUTING THE OPPONENT» Like the Spartans, New Mexico enters this weekend’s series looking for their first win in Mountain West play. The Lobos last squared off against UNLV and gave the Rebels all they could handle in a narrow 53-46 loss.

» New Mexico, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Dr. Paul Weir, is led on the court by senior forward Makuach Maluach, who is averaging 13.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest.

LAST TIME OUT VS. THE LOBOS» The Spartans and Lobos split last year’s contests with the home squads both coming away with victories. SJSU won the first meet-ing by a final of 88-85 in San Jose. Richard Washington knocked down a career-best seven 3-pointers, the last of which coming with just three seconds remaining on the game clock to lift the Spartans to victory. He finished with 25 points.

» Game two in Albuquerque saw a differ-ent outcome as the Lobos shot 57 percent for the game and cruised to an 86-59 win.

WASHINGTON CONTINUES TO IMPRESS» Senior guard Richard Washington is the Mountain West’s leading scorer at 22.2 points per game, which also ranks ninth nationally. He is also ranked 16th nationally in total points with 266.

» Washington has reached double-figure points in 11-of-12 games, has sevenperformances of 20-plus points and three 30-point games. The senior also has tallied the first two double-doubles of his career.

» His three 30-point outings are the most by a Spartan since 2011 (Adrian Oliver, 6).

» Washington is coming off another productive series against Colorado State, finishing with totals of 35 and 15 points, re-spectively. His 35 points are the most by any Mountain West player in a league game this season.

» Washington has scored at least 15 points in the last six games and is averaging 24.5 points during the stretch.

MENDOZA FINDS HIS RHYTHM» Freshman guard Sebastian Mendoza is coming off a career-best night against Colo-rado State, finishing with 15 points (5-of-12) and knocked down 3-of-7 triples.

AGEE GETTING IT DONE» Senior Ralph Agee has started to hit his stride as of late, scoring at least 12 poins in six of the last seven games. Against Boise State, he finished with 13 and 12 points, respective-ly, before going off for a career-best 18 points against Benedictine Mesa. He came up just shy of a double-double against the Redhawks with a season-best nine rebounds.

» Against Fresno State, Agee finished with 13 and 14 points, respectively. After leaving game one against Colorado State with an in-jury, he bounced back to finish with 12 points and five rebounds in game two vs. the Rams.

WELCOME TO THE BLOCK PARTY» The Spartans are ranked third in league play with 3.5 blocks per game. Sophomore Omari Moore has been one of the driving forces behind that number with an average of 1.4 per game. He ranks third individually in the conference in both overall (1.5) and league play.

LACEWELL COMING INTO HIS OWN» After coming off the bench and struggling to find his shot during the first six games, freshman Nate Lacewell saw some-thing click in game two against Boise State. Making his first career start, the forward scored 11 points and pulled down seven re-bounds to help put SJSU in a position to win.

» Lacewell has since started the last six games. He had a career-best 10 rebound, sev-en point, performance against Fresno State (1/10).

WELCOME TO THE SHOW» It was a debut to remember for junior transfer Jalen Dalcourt. Coming off the bench, the Lafayette, La. product provided an imme-diate spark as he knocked down 7-of-11 FG attempts, including three triples, for 23 points in his Spartan debut vs. Boise State.

» Dalcourt’s second game was equally impressive as he tied for the team lead in scoring with 18 points against Benedictine Mesa. He hit his first four 3-point attempts and finished 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.

DYNAMIC DUO» In game two against Boise State, Richard Washington and Jalen Dalcourt became the first Spartan duo to each score 20 points since Noah Baumann and Michael Steadman against New Mexico in 2019.

RAISING ARIZONA» Due to restricitions set in place by Santa Clara County in response to COVID-19, the Spartans have relocated to Phoenix, Arizona to play their 2020-21 conference slate until regula-tions allow for their return to the Bay Area. Both SJSU men’s and women’s programs have made the move to Arizona Grand Resort and Spa.

RICH’S BIG DAY» Richard Washington really couldn’t have asked for a better start than the one he had against Fresno Pacific. The Newport News, Va., native was unstoppable as he put up 38 points on 12-of-21 shooting including a 5-for-11 mark from downtown. He also pulled down a ca-reer-best 12 rebounds to secure his first-career double-double.

JUST HOW GOOD WAS IT THO?» Those 38 points by Washington not only powered the Spartans to victory, but they also hold a spot near the top of the record book. The total is the fourth-most in a single game in school history (Adrian Oliver vs. Louisiana Tech in 2010).

» For the season, those 38 points are tied for the sixth-most by any player in a NCAA Div. I game thus far in 2020-21.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE DOUBLE TROUBLE» In the win over Fresno Pacific, teammates Richard Washington and Omari Moore became the first Spartan duo to recod a double-double since Dec. 18, 2018 when Michael Steadman and Oumar Barry achieved the feat against Stanford.

GOOD GENES ALL AROUND» Having a NBA veteran for a father certainly helps when it comes to having the skill the play basketball in your blood. Fortunately for Kaison Hammonds and Chase Courtney, that’s exactly the case for them. Kaison’s father, Tom Ham-monds, was a legend at Georgia Tech - two first team All-ACC honors, third team All-America, top-10 NBA Draft pick, jersey number retired - before playing 12 seasons in the NBA with four teams. Chase’s father, Joseph Courtney, starred at Mississippi State before embarking on a 10-year NBA career of his own.

SPARTANS ON NATIONAL TELEVISION» San Jose State will play in four games that are set to be nationally televised this season.
