2020-2021 Mariachi Audition Requirements

What is the audition process?

There are up to two stages to the audition process.

• Stage 1: Video audition • Stage 2: Live audition (Invitation Only)

Stage 1: Video Audition

CONTENT OF VIDEO

1) From the selections provided in this document, play two scales of your choice: C, D, E, F, G, A, Bb for your instrument

2) From the selections provided, play two excerpts of your choice for your instrument 3) Play a short 2-minute selection of a song of your choice that shows originality. Does

not have to be necessarily Mariachi. Singing is encouraged for this selection but not required.

HOW TO RECORD YOUR VIDEO

Using a phone or other device, make a video performing the scale and solo works that were listed above. Please follow these guidelines:

• Your entire body from head to toe including hands and instrument should be visible on the video.

• Make sure that the final version you submit represents your best playing. Unlike a live audition, you can keep recording until you are satisfied.

• If you are unable to record a video or upload for any reason, please contact Mr. Klein, Magnet Coordinator, to discuss alternatives. (jklein1@houstonisd.org)

HOW DO I UPLOAD MY VIDEOS?

Video submissions will be accepted from December 3, 2019 – January 5, 2020. Please check our website at that time for uploading instructions. Your videos will be uploaded individually.

You will submit a total of four videos:

1) Scales 2) Excerpt #1 3) Excerpt #2 4) Selection of your choice, no longer than two (2) minutes.

Stage 2: Live Audition (Invitation Only)

Students will be notified by the Magnet Office no later than January 10, 2020 if they qualify for a live audition. Live auditions will be scheduled on January 18, 2020. (Please hold the date.) Approximate length of audition: 30 minutes total (including warm up and registration). What to expect:

1. Out of the scales provided in the audition materials the Director will ask you to play two.

2. Out of the excerpts provided in the audition materials the Director will ask you to play two.

3. Perform the full song submitted on your video or a similar one that shows your originality and personality, singing is highly encouraged.

4. Sight reading: The Director will provide you with a short selection, you will be able to study it for one minute and then perform it on your best ability

5. The Director will interview you What should I bring for the Callback Audition?

1. Sheet music 2. Your instrument 3. Please come warmed up and tuned. 4. Dress code is casual formal. Feel free to put your traje de charro on!
